"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

Thanks for the replies peoples . . . I need something to get the 'old mojo' up and running again. Suffering from the 'best laid plans are caput syndrom' . . . nearly 65 (June) and the plans we made have been totaly squashed, 180 degre turn about . . . Hazels back is a mess, she is going to come out of the hospital full of titanium scafolding to hold the bone grafts! My legs have gone in the past 6 months:bang:

So, no fishing, no boats, we have to make the best of home cumforts? However, there is always someone worse off . . . we have to look at the positive side. Hazel is already planning hotel deals away 'when she is well enough'?

I don't know what you're involvement with these two lenses extends to, but I would suggest you are doing them a terrible injustice.

I have both and am very satisfied with them as 'cheap' lenses as you put it.

Find fault with my 'straight-from-the-camera' JPG's......if you can.

Just my opinion based on ownership and use

And yes they are cheap but what's wrong with that?

. . . its 6 months for me since I took any sort of picture. Seem to have lost my mojo . . . a new camera would do little for me? I dont like change, the Misses fight to get my clothes in the wash!

I'm just coming up for retirement, looking at the cameras, my Hazel is going into hospital in a couple of weeks, very long converless (up to 12 months?). So I'm thinking, gardening, close ups in the garden its a miniature jungle out there? The 14-45 lens is not a true macro, but a clip on job would do . . . what are they called retail for £40'ish?

i've got a raynox and it fits onto the end of my 14-45 very nicely. it's well made and comes well packaged. the glass is good too and it gives a really sharp image. i've tried to look for some images on my flickr account to show what it can do but they seem to have dropped off the end of my 200 free photo account!

have a look here at what it can do http://www.flickr.com/groups/raynoxdcr250/

Hi all,

Can anyone confirm if Intelligent Resolution and I.Dynamic work only for JPEGS? I'd always assumed so, but notice that even when in RAW only mode I can switch both on and se their icons on the screen.

Thanks
Steve

Hi all.

Anyone able to help with my question above?

Cheers
Steve

Pretty sure it's Jpeg only, it's like with the in camera effects like black and white etc. it will apply it to the preview on the screen, but when you load the RAW into Lightroom or whatever it disappears and resets to standard.

Hi all,

Which kit lens would people recommend? The newer 14-42 (non PZ) or the older 14-45?

Also, where could I find a second GF1 battery, not having to pay the hugely expensive Panasonic prices. Are there any reliable Ebay sellers?

The older is supposed to be sharper. Take a look here: http://www.slrgear.com/reviews/showcat.php/cat/69

to see the 3 tested. It does appear to depend at which aperture. The newer 14-42 non PZ appears to test the sharpest at f8 for example (which is where I tend to use my lenses).

Amazon. Google the battery part number and read the reviews on Amazon. I picked up a spare for my GX1 for £10 off there the other day.

Oh well, in for a penny. I picked up a GX1 today with the 14.42 PZ and the 20mm f1.7

The Walimax 7.5mm fisheye is in the post too so thats me sorted for the 12 day cruise in June ;)

Oh, no Clarke, you've only had it a couple of weeks. That must be so frustrating.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a smallish case or bag for m4/3 gear? I've got the G1 with the 14-42 and 45-200, but I need to find some sort of bag to keep them safe. I'm not really sure where to start looking as there are so many options out there.

I've got a Domke F-5XB bag and love it but it's quite expensive, I also looked at the ThinkTank Retrospective 5 (again not cheap but gets good reviews).

I've got a lowepro slingshot 100aw. It's got loads of room for the small lenses and m4/3 body and its easy to carry around.

Just bought a Crumpler Cupcake 1500 which just fits the GX1, 14-42, 14mm pancake and 7.5mm fisheye. It's quite tiny... Thinking of getting the cupcake 2500 for a little more room.

I needed a bag with space for general non-camera crap as well as my m4/3's kit, ended up with a Kata DR466i. Discrete, space for body/4 or so lenses/flash/gubbins, not too massive :) There's space for a laptop too, which I use for books etc, but the DR465i eliminates this if not needed, and is a wee witty cheaper.

I've got an Acme Made Union Photo Messanger use it with my GF1 or G1, 14-45 and 45-200. It's made from a hard wearing waterproof material, doesn't look like a camera bag as such. I got mine in Jessops for £25.

Here's a flickr link to a couple of pics (these aren't mine, I still haven't got round to taking any of it)

I've just bought the Lowepro Fastpack 100 especially for my G2. I'm really pleased with it. Theres plenty of room for the G2 with the 14-42 power zoom on it, plus room for a 45-200. I would also be able to put my 2 pancake lens in and my Nissin flashgun.

I have just tried it out with my Panny G1 with kit 14-42 on camera, 45-200 in lens bag and there is still plenty of room in the padded camera are. Plenty of room in other compartment for camera accessories, or lunch and waterproof.

Here's a quick snap with the above in.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the help.
I'm using the one that my camcorder normally lives in for now as I really wanted to get out and make the most of the sunshine today. The video camera has been packed away safely so that I can keep using its bag for a while until I can get to the local camera shop to try some out.

I spent most of the day shooting in iA and Aperture priority modes so that I could spend a bit of time getting used to the controls and layout of the buttons. It was my first day out with the G1 and I'm pretty happy with the results although no matter how nicely I asked, the squirrels just would not sit still! :D

I put a thread in the feedback section last night with a few of my pictures in from the forest yesterday. I've not had any replies in it as yet (which I'm taking as a sign that my pictures are awesome! :D ) but I woke up this morning to find that the National Trust's Hatfield Forest page had posted a link to the thread on Facebook. :suspect:

Haha, I don't know about that!
I'm not overly bothered by it, just a little surprised. Some of them are on Facebook anyway with Hatfield Forest NT tagged, I just didn't expect a thread from here to be linked. One of the staff there must be a member or visitor here, as I can't see how they'd have found the thread otherwise. They don't show up on Google searches or anything.

I certainly would've expected them to ask first!

I asked them on Facebook where they got the link from and they said it came up on Google Alerts, but yeah, it would have been polite to ask first.

I've asked this in the main forum but with no reply. Got a GF1, put on an Olympus 45mm f1.8. It will not manual focus. Checked the GF1 with my Pany 20mm, no probs. The Oly lens is brand new and works fine with AF.
Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!:)

I assume you have the GF1 set to MF?

Just to interject...

If anyone want's a NEW box'd 14-45mm kit lens they are available at Park Cameras but you need to call as they are as yet not on their web site.

That's interesting, I've been looking into getting one of those. The 14-45 is meant to be the best of the kit lenses, aren't they?

Yes!! And it's reputed to be one of the best 'Kit' lenses of any manufacturer!!

Except the Oly MK1!!

A better way is to buy a 52mm/43mm step down filter ring. I got mine from ebay for £1.99. Its far easier than using the clip thing which comes with the Raynox. Sometimes with the clip on thing you get a shadow if using flash, and also its a bit clumsy to use.

The macro adapter lens is called a Raynox DCR-250. There is also another less powerful one called the Raynox DCR-150. They are excellent and work very well with the G series. I have both and find them very good.

Ordered a Raynox DCR-250 yesteday, not sure about the step ring, its a better enginering solution, but not so convenient . . . or is it? I'll see how we go? Need to look on fleBay?

CJS

PS, Just orderd the 52-43mm Step down ring from fleBay, for a couple of quid I have both options . . .

I'm looking at getting one of those myself if I can find them in stock at a good price.

I looked, no deals I could see, unless you consider a fiver off, snatched back with postage, do they think I got out of the banana tree yesterday

So I went for Amazon and free delivery. I've had confirmation of order and despatch today.

You'll be glad you ordered the step ring. It's so much more convenient. You can leave it connected to your Raynox and then should screw the complete lot on like a filter. Much less bulky to carry around as well, not like that clumsy clip on thing.

Mmm . . . thats made me feel better about the coming months. Out in the jungle I call a garden, see what wild life I can spot, some of it you could not dream up for a si-fi movie.

First I need to charge the batteries, 6 months non use . . . . !

CJS

Can anyone give me some advice on 3rd party batteries for a G2. Are the generally considered safe and can you use the original charger?

Cheers
