"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

Lovely shot. What was the noise like at full size, and did you use any noise software?

Thanks all :)

No noise reduction was done on that shot. Not sure how you quantify noise, but yes the noise is visible at full size, but as you can see it is more than acceptable for iso 3200 at normal viewing sizes (to me anyway). I don't think I would have got as good a shot as that with my Panny TZ7, which is the other camera I took on holiday with me (leaving all my DSLR kit at home).

@ricky1981 - Thanks for posting that. I do shoot a lot of video which is one reason that GH2 appeals. I was interested in the hack that makes it's video very very good. However it seems my class 10 Transcend cards are not really up to the job and I don't want to fork out £100s for Sandisc ones.

I still might weight to see what's coming next from Panasonic. If I could get a GH2 second hand then I could try it and not lose much if I sold it again but they seem very rare used.

I suppose if someone has decided to get the gh2 they've made a strong decision as it's a very niche product etc, etc. when I was looking for gh1 almost all of the descriptions said that they're only selling due to upgrading to gh2 + keeping the 14-140mm lens .

Picked up a GX1, 14-42 X lens and LVF 2 today, so far very very impressed:)

I really like the feel im my hand. The LVF slips on and off easily, but also locks in nice and securely. The 90 degree movement could be very useful when being creative.

When i tried the Gx1 in the shop (Mathers in Bolton, who were very good btw) it felt alien without a viewfinder - so i bought one. However since getting home i havent used or missed it as yet. I would imagine it will become more useful when using zoom lenses and manual focus.

The auto tracking works very well - It passed my black labrador test anyway!

Off for another play...

Good to know Tiger feet I've 7ish days to wait for mine !

Manual focus - but does work with a GX1 though.
The MF thing doesn't really bother me as I am getting one mainly to experiment with some old MF lenses. Do you know if the screen still zooms in for more accurate focusing when using the adaptor and MF lenses?

You need to change a setting (on the GX1 at least) to 'Shoot w/o lens'.

I have just tried this out and the menu options change. It gives a single focus area and you tap the screen in the area you need to check the focus of to zoom in. Works pretty well!

After thought: I also have a reverse coupler ring for the odd macro shot. Not so hot but probably more a human issue more than camera.

Couple more shots from the G1 with 45mm, promise I'll stop banging on about this lens :D

Again these have been processed too, but it's as good as I could wish for, If I'd taken it on my 5D2 kit after processing

You need to stop this 45mm evangelism, my shopping list has other priorities, dammit! ;)

Nice shots tho, loving the reflections and colour :)

Cool sounds like it will work fine. I will back on of the adaptors then.

I'm trying to work out how to balance flash and ambient light on my G2, so that I can get the background dark and the subject light. I am using Manual mode, setting my required aperture, ISO 100 and exposing for the background. I then take a photo with my Nissin flashgun on camera, and increase the shutter speed to get desired result.

Now I know that the fastest sync speed on my G3 is 1/160, but even at this speed I cannot get the background as dark as I would like it.

If I shoot in Aperture mode would adjusting the exposure compensation work or does this act globally to adjust the flash as well.

Is there anyway to do this. Any suggestions please?

In addition to increasing the shutter speed you can also close down the aperture or lower the ISO to get a darker ambient exposure. This will naturally require more power from the flash to bring the subject up to a correct exposure.

Thanks. I was trying to work out how to do it though by using a large aperture to get shallow DOF. I've set my ISO at 100, so can't lower that any more. I suppose though that if I wanted a completely black background it wouldn't matter if I used a small aperture as I wouldn't see the background.

On the G3 there is Flash Adjust on the REC menu. Assuming your camera talks to the Nissin flash then you can adjust the output by 2 stops either way.

Could you not do it at night Barbara? It would start things off in the right direction.

Ok what's wrong with the ND filter? Allows shooting at large apertures while keeping the shutter speed within flash sync.. done.

Hi Janice, yes I could but being the daughter of a mad scientist I was always taught to look for answers. I'd just been following a tutorial on how to do it with the Nikon D7000, when curiosity made me wonder how to do it on my Panny. I'll probably never need to do it on the Panny, but I needed to know.:cuckoo:

Just tried this and it did work to make the background darker, but not enough to black it out.

Has anyone tried the 3d lens with the Panasonic GX1? I know its not sensible but I'm getting an urge to get one. Please stop me......

Take a cold shower!!

All this talk of flashes has got me wanting to add one to my M43 kit. Which ones work with Panasonic camera, namely GF2?

You'll look daft in 3D glasses.:D

Take a cold shower!!

Both of these points received. Thanks.

If nothing else, all this silly talk has made me see the upcoming DMW-GMC1 macro adapter for 14-42. My reckoning is that if the Panasonic Shop has it for £99.99 it is going to be available cheaper than that, maybe £85 or £90.

Anyone know when it's likely to be available?
