"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

Great shots! Wish I had half the creativity you display on those.

After seeing the images from the new Olympus I am in. Good looking, EVF, IBIS sounds like it might have the new 16MP sensor... As a compact package for the outdoors seems absolutely unbeatable!

I wonder why they felt the need to go to a decimal point in the length?

Well, yes... but is it reeeeeeaaaalllllly 17.5mm?

Are there any issues when putting a Lumix lens, with/without IS, on an Olympus body.

The Lumix IS being in the lens and the Olympus IS in the body.

I've heard anecdotally that this is fine as long as you switch off the IS on the lens. Not sure how this works with stuff like the 14-42 which has no switch, but given than the oly system has its own kit lenses it may be a non issue.

I have an Olympus E-PL2 and use 3 Lumix lenses. The lenses that have OIS (14-45 and 45-200( now sold) ) I turned off the camera stabiliser and used OIS. My 14mm lens with no OIS, I use the cameras system. Seems to work well for me

You'd think so but I think you still come out a little on top. That's the normal way I shoot anyway and with an in view histogram it should be easy enough to shift the histogram over to the right without blowing highlights... if you have time to do all this before taking the shot :D and of course if shifting to the right blows something then you don't bother.

If you Google "exposing to the right" you'll find better explanations than I can give but basically a high % of the dynamic range is over to the RHS and if you shoot a "normal" smack in the middle exposure you don't make use of it so it could be a good idea to shoot this way even without the side effect of noise being hidden. There's a write up at Luminous here...

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/expose-right.shtml

As you'll end up with a shot that's too bright one nice side effect of backing it off is that noise seems to be hidden in the final image.

Give it a try as see what you think :D

Thanks Graham. Also read the UPDATE from August 2011 at the end...lots more great info.

I was just thinking about the same thing... am toying with getting an Olympus body as the IBIS could be handy when using some old MF lenses. I had been planning on getting a GF3 as a pocket camera but am tempted by the Oly E-PM1 instead.

I'm quite pleased with this...

It isn't a fantastic picture but I'm quite pleased with it as it's two images stitched together, a new technique for me as I normally don't bother with such things :D

Well done Graham. I can't see the join, Ern!

Thanks.

I'm Alan, but you can call me Graham :D I've been called worse :D

I've played with stitching before but only with test shots and this is the first time I've done it with real photos. I didn't actually take these intending to stitch them, I just spotted them while looking through a folder.

I've looked at it at 100% and I can't see the join :cuckoo: Clever software indeed.

Decided to take a punt on the E-PM1 as I found a decent deal on the twin lens kit (not sure I need the 40-150 but it will be interesting to test it). I'll be interested to see how it compares to the Panasonics as I wasn't over impressed by the original EP1.

I'll be interested in how it is v Panny. My niece has an Oly and loves it but it's not the EP1.

Been thinking about getting a long lens myself.

Just got my Canon EF to M 4/3 adaptor. My 70-200 f 2.8 become 140-400 f 2.8! Wicked! but look a little stupid! I'm loving manual focus! Shame my 85L can only manual focus with a Canon!!!

Anyone got the LVF2 viewfinder for their GX1 yet? Struggling to track one down in New Zealand so was hoping for a bit of feedback before I go down the import route :)

Does it have electronics to stop down the lens? Or is it always at f/2.8 unless you do the "rip off from camera while DoF previewing" trick?

It wide open when you mount on a M4/3.

I just got the basic adapter, If I'm going to do this often and need to stop down then I will invest in a EF to M4/3 with Aperture control adapter. Like this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Canon-EOS...ns_caps_hoods_adaptors_ET&hash=item45fcfa8ae1
But down side it's not graded stops therefore some testing is needed.

But I think if I'm mounting my ef lens it's mainly for playing around. Any serious photos will be using it back on the 5D II.

Saying that I'm still impressed with the m4/3 system.

Giving consideration to getting a GF 1 or 2, can I just check that I'm right in thinking that neither of these bodies have focus peaking for manual focus lenses though?

Is there any difference in the sensor in these 2 models?

Just won a bid on a 135mm 2.8 manual lens for £16.50 delivered! Will see if I can be fast enough to capture my 6 year old son's Rugby match! Can't wait!!

Wouldn't look as stupid as mounting a Canon white lens to the tiny G3!

I've tried one with a few lenses but it made my GX1 the same size as my G3. It's pretty much the same as the G3 one, so if you can't find it you should be able to try out a G3 and get a feel for the quality.

Can anyone recommend an adapter for nikon lenses that can use the af (presuming af-s g lens)?
And as a second question - does it auto change the aperture?
(otherwise it's pointless on the G lens)

Would be interested to know if there is a fairly cheap but good m42 adapter too as I have a 300mm I could use on it...

Thanks in advance :)

Straight adapter
AF? adapter - but states no aperture control...?

I may be entirely wrong, but I can't see how autofocus between completely different manufacturers equipment would be possible unless compatibility was built in from the ground up (not likely between any body manufacturers). I suspect the autofocus firmware in the Panasonic body would need to incorporate Nikon lens routines, and they'd have to be licenced by Panasonic, but I doubt nikon would license that kind of thing.

Happy to be corrected tho! :)

As for the M42, does the lens not have an aperture ring you can use?

AFAIK you can only get AF on Panasonic and Olympus µ4/3rds and 4/3rds lenses (the later via an official µ4/3rds adaptor). Older lenses with aperture rings can be adapted via relatively cheap adaptors that just replicate the fitting for them, the camera is then set to shoot without lens and takes the metering. Newer lenses need to have their aperture set on a body that accepts their lens, then fit to the µ4/3s camera with an generic adaptor.

Purchased a GF1 + 20mm f/1.7 to supplement the 40D! Arrived today and I can't wait to get out and play with it tomorrow!
Very jealous of some of these Voigtländers, but I feel it is going to be many years and a few student loan installments before I even think about getting one of them!

Can anyone recommend somewhere to buy third party batteries for the G3, the price of the Panasonic ones is a bit scary!
The answer may lie within this thread... Most third party batts won't work with the battery meter in panny cameras, but there's a German company whose will. I asked the same question (for a GF2 batt), but the Android forum app can't seem to dig up the response :bonk:

This one?

Does the GF1 & G1 suffer from the same battery compatibility issues as other models?

I have both, use 3rd party batteries and the answer is no according to mine.
