"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

I think so. You just fill in your camera details and send the receipt with the form to panasonic. Don't recall it saying any limits about where you can buy from.

Haven't had anything back yet though, but I think it said up to 5 weeks.

GF2 kit with 14-42 IOS and 14mm Pancake is £400 in jessops. i was going to buy an EPL2 but stopped by at the panny instead. Free lightroom? download the form and send it off with the details required.

If anyone is concidering selling the Lightroom 3 they got with a new purchase, I would be interested..?

Mark

I bought the GF3/14mm and sent off to Panasonic for the freebies about 10days ago so I should be hearing from them soon,I will be selling the lightroom 3 package unopened as I already have CS5, I have not got a clue on price,I will have to check what they are going for unless you know

Dave

I'm interested but the price has to be good..!

Mark

Just realised Mark I forgot to mention that I am in the UK

Dave

no trading fellas please.

i WAS going to get a EPL2, but this deal was too good to pass up, its the pancake that i really wanted, i can always move the body and lens on and buy a EP if i dont get on with the panny

I don't want to discuss trading, I just want to ask if anyone is considering selling LR3 as I will be interested.

ok no problem just answering Marks thread,I have not got enough posts yet to trade anyway

Hi Simon, enjoy Jessops in York, I thought they were fab. The chap I spoke to was really enthusiastic about the G3. There is a GF2 to trail, some Olympus camera and Sony on the same island in the middle of the shop. Was great to take photos on my SD card! Have fun and let us know what you think!

Spent an interesting hour in Jessops, trying out the G3 against the G2 and GF2, only to be told there wasn't one in store to purchase !! Excellent camera and very compact but the G2 was easier to hold so I am still no wiser :( came away empty handed after almost buying a Nikon D3100 which is also very reasonably priced !!

How much bigger was the G3 against the GF2,and also did you notice any difference in the EVF on the G3 against the G2

The images above from me were Jpg's from the camera with just a tad of PP, not much at all needed.

I will be selling my copy of LR3 as i already use it.

I thought the overall sizes were equal, and couldn't see any visible difference in the EVF either, which hasn't made selection any easier 

The G3 is like a rounded off version of the GF1 but with an excellent EVF and articulating screen!

I did like the touch screen and the articulation Andy I can see where it would come into it's own. Not very easy testing it in Jessops with all the security cabling strapped to it !

stick your request in Wanted

and for those getting a free copy, familiarise yourselves with the rules, especially profiteering...

Good call!

Might be classed as profiteering but a discounted price for someone who hasn't got a copy is always a good thing surely?

and we are only suggesting that we will be selling the goods not advertising them for sale.

I tried Lightroom but I thought that it looked very complex whilst lacking some of the abilities of CS5, plus it looked more biased towards being a photo filiing and management thing rather than a photo processing package. Is that right or have I missed something?

I ended up buying CS5 but if Lightroom offers something I missed I might be tempted if going for a G3.

I feel your pain as I'm still utterly undecided on what to get, if the G3 had continued along the same lines as the G2 but with the new sensor etc I would have bought one by now. As it is, I'm utterly torn between the GH2 (bigger grip, more physical buttons, amazing video) and the G3 (cheaper, more compact)

Keep the E-PL2 and get the bigger GH2 as well (best of both worlds but no money left for nice glass) or sell the E-PL2, get the G3 (good compromise between both cameras size wise) and get lots of nice glass...?!

The hardest part is that nobody seems to stock most of these cameras, I can't find a GH2 in a physical retail store within 30 miles of my hometown. I would also love to see how the 100-300 feels on the G3, but nobody stocks both.

This review has more or less sold it to me : http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Panasonic_Lumix_DMC_G3/verdict.shtml

I know what you mean about finding a shop or dealer where you can go to see the full ranges, there aren't many shops around me which hold full stocks of equipment either. Can't even get a G3 over the counter as I found out in Jessops today, without ordering one in !

Like the website as well, your Retro and Sportscar Action day especially caught my eye- worrying thing is I owned half of the retro cars :)

I decided what the hell, ordered a G3 for collection from Jessops tomorrow and a Panasonic 100-300 from Amazon (great price for the lens there). Pre-ordered the Olympus 45mm 1.8 from Warehouse Express so now just need to sort a wide angle and I'm done.

Olympus 12mm f2 or 9-18mm, hmmmm. That's the next tough one!

That's a nice review but yet again they criticise the EFV for being laggy and noisy and I'm convinced that they are missing something here...

The EVF only gets laggy and noisy in low light if you're using a smallish aperture because the gain is turned up. I've just tried my G1+25mm f0.95 in a room with no lights on and although the screen was laggy and noisy it was still easily usable and even though the lights were off I could easily read the time on a clock that I couldn't read by eye and in those circumstances a bit of lag and noise is a small price to pay for being able to see in the dark IMVHO. Try that with an optical viewfinder!

Stepping back out of the dark lit by a single and just turned on energy saving bulb there was next to no lag and next to no noise.

I just can't understand why reviewers can't work out why there's a bit of lag and noise in very low light with smallish apertures, try the same conditions with an OVF and DoF preview at the same aperture and you wouldn't be able to see much at all, if anything.

I haven't noticed that at all. Only noisy thing on mine is the 20mm lens when focusing, can actually feel it through the camera, lol. Takes great photos though so I'll put up with it.

Looked at a G2 myself and liked how it felt. EVF has always been a bit of a sticking point for me though.

I noticed that the camera in the review is fitted with a f3.5-5.6 lens so assuming that's what they used the max apertures are limited and yet they expect a bright clear view?

To me once you think about it a bit of lag and noise is probably a price worth paying for being able to see in the dark.

I have a 20mm f1.7 on my GF1, if there's any other noise in the environment I don't notice the lens noise.

It's a but strange at first but I soon got used to it and I miss the real time in EVF histogram when using my DSLR's.

Can anyone clarify the battery situation for the G3? I've been looking at Amazon and eBay but none the wiser, some suggest the ones they are selling will work fully (with battery life indicator), others are very vague.

Has anyone got first hand experience of any particular brands? Bit of a joke that they are apparently trying to block third party batteries yet charging at least £60 for an original replacement (which surely very few people will ever pay)

Olymps 12 or 9-18 that is a tough one! 9-18 is £200 cheaper if that helps!

I use LightRoom for the GF1.
It does all thats required for most images, any further tweaks then i use CS5 but generally very little to do to the images.
Have to use CS5 if ive shot infra-red as there is no way yet in LR to do the Red/Blue colour swap.
As a picture management app, its superb. Only thing remotely close that ive used is ViewNX for Nikon.

Found an undocumented feature of the G3, it's very slightly waterproof. Mine took a swim in the bath yesterday (almost fully submerged for a couple of seconds) and after a day drying out it's actually working! Gonna give it a thorough test to make sure everything is still perfect. lol

We won't ask why you had a camera whilst in the bath...

Yeah, you've missed all the processing controls.
:)

I've played with LR, but I use Aperture as Im a Mac man, can't remember the last time I use PS for photo editing, Aperture and Lightroom do it all.

Just picked up my G3 (in Jessops, not a nice or helpful experience...especially annoying when London Camera Exchange were so helpful but sadly didn't have stock), geeeez it's tiny, in fact it's so tiny I really can't see any point in keeping my E-PL2, it's actually smaller aside from the EVF bulge.

EVF is superb though, so big and bright, I wasn't expecting much but it's really nice. AF is also much much quicker than my E-PL2.

Probably my first camera where a read of the manual is a requirement, I've never seen so many settings that are not immediately obvious what they even do (Nikon have this nailed with their '?' system in the menu)

The postman brought me a nice present today from my hubby for our wedding anniversary. It was a G2. Now I know that I said I wouldn't upgrade because I loved the G1 and didn't like touch screens, but after playing around with it for an hour or two I must say that I'm impressed. Minor niggle though is that the SD card is in with the battery at the bottom rather than the side but apart from that I am really pleased with it. I did have the offer of a G3 instead but somehow this doesn't appeal to me, as it's more like a compact than a serious camera and the grip just isn't big enough.
I'm looking forward now to taking some photos with it - other than of my computer room. There was also a special offer with it of Lightroom 3. This was something I have been meaning to buy for a while but the £200 price tag put me off, so I just managed with Lightroom 1. I understand that Lightroom 3 will let you work tethered, so maybe the inability to remove card when on a tripod wont be too bad after all.
To make matters even better Amazon also had an offer of a £30 free voucher to spend on anything on Amazon. I've put this towards a new Manfrotto 496RC2 ball head.:plusone:

How are you finding the G2?? How does it compare to the g1?
