"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

Anyone tried a wide angle adapter on there camera"s ( for interior shots etc ) , there are a few on ebay 0.45x for 52mm thread , example here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/52mm-0-45X-Wi...ers_Lenses&hash=item2a0d6c3ec5#ht_3513wt_1139

I have used similar wide angle adapters on camcorders with good results , just wondering if I would be disapointed with one on a 20mm on the GH1 . I have been using the Moving Jpeg HD mode to put footage of the grandson directly on to an ipad without any conversion and was thinking of this adapter for such use.

I have two of these. I advertised them in the for sale section but got no interest  at all.

I used mine on my GF1+20mm f1.7 with differing results. They're ok things IMHO but I didn't like using them as I thought they changed the purity of the 20mm f1.7  That probably sounds daft but there you go... :bonk::)

Thanks for the reply.

I'm not really into wildlife photography but I have to say that's a great photograph. Really sharp too. Nice one!

There's a picture of the GF3 over at the 4/3 rumor site...

http://www.43rumors.com/category/rumor/

Looks ok, IMVHO, but I'd rather have an updated GF1 sort of camera. Maybe there'll be one later in the year.

I agree with you there. I love the look of the gf1 but wish it was updated a little! Are there any others cameras out there that look like old style film cameras but are digital and have interchangeable lenses?!

I've just been looking on 43rumors.com and it makes mention of a more pro orientated camera to come soon. Does anyone believe they will make something that is that good?

Having sold a 1DmkIV I am looking for something maybe not quite that good but more 7D/5D2/D700 range. Now I love my GF2 and if there was a M4/3 camera that was capable of results like the three mention I would snap it up for sure. The GF2 is great but lacks some features I find essential. Namely fast(ish) FPS, good AF tracking for sports and aviation and good high ISO for indoors. It's good for holidays and more casual shooting but at the moment there isn't a M4/3 camera that could cover all I need. When there is I can't see myself staying with a DSLR.

I have seen this rumour too, some of the concept designs floating around on the web look quite cool with the built in view finder! If it was capable of higher af for sports it would be a great all round camera!

Has anyone tried external flashes on their cameras or for close up photography?

Any 14mm 2.5mm owners can give feedback on the lens , whats it like on interior shots compared to the 20mm 1.7 ( which I have ) .
Been useing 20mm quite a bit inside the house photo/video ( grandson shots ) , but not quite wide enough on occasions.
Is it a good buy new at £200 or any alternatives to consider such as Olympus 17mm 2.8 ?

Best budget macro setup pennies can buy:

Minolta MD 45mm F2 (£16), Teleplus MC7 Macro teleconverter (1p), MD-m4/3 adaptor (£10), Yongnuo YN560 flash (£50).

Add a plastic milk bottle diffuser and you're laughing.

That lens is the sharpest thing I've ever used!

Looking for a cheap macro setup for my EP1 and looking into older lenses, looks a good setup! Have you any shots taken with it?

I've read quite a few pages of this thread but I'm still a bit unclear. Is there any general consensus on the best telephoto zoom lens to get for the Micro 4/3rds format? I'm using an E-PL2 so size is more of a consideration and I don't really want to go down the conversion/adaptor route, as obviously handling won't be as good as it would with one of the Panasonic mini-DSLR style cameras.

I've got the Lumix G Panasonic 45-200mm, which gives the maximum telephoto equivalent of 90-400mm. I've found it to be a very good lens on my G1 and GF1. I believe this can be used on your E-PL2 but no doubt someone on here who has used this camera will be able to help you more.

If you follow this link you can see lots of examples of the lens. http://www.flickriver.com/search/Panasonic+G+45-200/

That lens does look tempting and resaonably priced too, if rather slow

Does it have the USM/HSM type focus motor that allows full time manual focus?

PS.

I'm getting a bit annoyed with Panasonic. Why can't we have some constant aperture lenses? I'd be a lot happier with a 14-42mm f2.8 and 40-xxx f2.8 and why can't we have lens markings?

DoF and distance markings are a Godsend but all we get on Panasonic lenses are focal lengths, does anyone find these usefull? I've never seen a use for them and I'd drop them in a millisecond if I could have DoF and distance markings rather than (to me) useless 14, 18, 25, 35 and 42mm.

you can't have a focus by wire focus ring with dof scale it wouldn't work. I'd sooner have a proper mf ring with scale too but it isn't going to happen I don't think.

Only a test shot to compare it to the Zuiko, I haven't had it long.

This is at max magnification, no sharpening (f2.8):

Ah well, looks like that's it then. I don't know how Panasonic lenses work but I have USM/HSM lenses from Canon and Sigma with distance and DoF scales.

Not having distance and DoF markings is a major pain. Looks like MFT isn't going to be the system I was hoping for, lack of lenses and lack of lens markings is severely limiting it's use for me

It's because the focus ring freely spins, all it does is send a signal to the camera telling the direction of focus and speed, it does not specify a point. The camera then tells the focus motor go forward or back and at what speed and when to stop until it can no more, but the focus ring will keep on turning forever. It's quite nice to use for fine adjustments, but is useless for actually focussing on something in it's own right.

I beleive some of the HG 4/3 lenses have a normal arrangement with proper MF.

Don't forget m4/3 is not a pro system and none of the current lineup has ever made itself out to be anything of the sort, Olympus have said all along Pros and Semi Pros should be looking at the top E series.

I do wish they'd hurry up and bring about a pro spec m4/3 offering though, it;s only refinements that need doing really - weather sealing, higher fps and a lens range with proper MF is all that is really required, anything else is a bonus!

I suppose that my best hope is Leica, Sigma and the like if they develop lenses. I live in hope.

PS. There's a picture of the "Leica" 25mm f1.4 on the MFT rumors site and it's devoid of markings. Strange as the FT version at least had distance markings. I don't see the point of this lens when we already have the 20mm f1.7. It seems like a total waste of time and effort when they could have spent the time and effort making something that I WANT (!!) ie. a 14-42mm 2.8 and some fast primes all with lens markings.

Thing is people wil buy the 25mm because of the name, because of the reputation of the old one and video boys will want the combination of high IQ and speed. I don't think it;s a bad thing to have around, but like you is not something I want either.

These lenses, or similar sizes are freely available albeit in four thirds flavour, so you would need the adapter and one that will transfer data properly between camera and lens.
There is a nice looking Olympus 14-35mm constant f2.0 ZUIKO lens available HERE. I guess the price hints at why these arent going to be popular sellers if they were to make them in M43 format.....

Now, you do have the choice..

I have just joined the club.

After needing to downsize from my 40D I decided to go for a GF2...however today I have just managed to get myself a brand new GF1 with 20mm f1.7 for £450!
Just got to get used to the settings and controls but this is a damn fine little camera!:eek:

Nice deal you got there! GF1 with the 20mm has been quite hard to find! Thats only about £180 more than I paid for the 20mm alone!

Agreed.

I am also getting pretty frustrated with the lens roadmap for M4/3.

On the train to Inverness armed with GF1 and 20mm

Going to rent a flat to live up there

That sounds fab, Dave. Hope you can make a fresh start and don't forget to keep taking those photos in honour of that special lady!

There's some fantastic scenery up there that should keep you busy. Best of luck in your new home.

Yup. If only they'd do what I think they should they'd sell much more stuff, I'd be happy, and they'd all be rich :)

I'd be happy with... 14-42mm f2.8, 40mm f1.4 and a macro, something like 100mm f2.8. All with lens markings, of course, and as it seems to be impossible for Panasonic to do it I hope that Sigma bring out a range of lenses.

If I was happier with the lens choice I'd also buy one of their expensive wides.

Anyway, bokeh with the 14-42mm...

Actually, for macro would I be better off with a manual lens and adapter? Can anyone recommend something around 100mm f2.8 or faster, quite compact and in keeping with MFT? and adapter? Can you meter with an adapter and a manual lens or do you have to just guess?

See post at the top of this page for my Macro setup. See here for some results from it.

Metering is no problem but you have to remeber to set the aperture yourself.

There is no such thing as a compact full frame macro lens, so whatever cheapo option you plump for it'll be big.

I believe Pentax and Canon do/did 100mm f2.8 Macros.

Far more common are the various 90mm Macros from Tamron and Vivitar but they are all good so expensive. Vivitar S1 105mm Macro is incredibly so.

There is a Cosina 100mm f3.5, but from the samples I've seen it should be avoided.

Some pics, because I'm bored:

P1080058.jpg

Rokkor 45mm F2 and 14-45mm. Same size as the new 25mm as it happens.

P1080061.jpg

Rokkor in Macro mode on 2x Teleplus Macro Teleconverter.

Despite the mismatch in focal length and focus distance with the TC, this setup gives a horizontal field of view of 16mm at min focussing distance, which is slightly closer than 1:1.

I don't fancy a normal sized macro lens on MFT so guess I'll have to stick to my 20D and 150mm f2.8. I'll have to think about it.

Not been here for a while. Things have been a bit up in the air with the MS.
Having a play with FilterStorm pro on the iPad and Noir.

iPad is great for workflow on the move.
Getting back into the dSLR Market again, just about got my hands on a Fuji S5 pro.
Was contemplating chopping in the GF1 but with summer here, time to dig out the IR filter again.

Last one in the shop and I had to haggle him down from £600. I really didn't want touchscreen and I really did want the 20mm :D

Pictures!!! :) Post your pictures here! :)

Going to take the camera to work and to archery tomorrow so should hopefully get some then
