"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

Aren't the likes of Sigma going to be making micro 2/3 lenses soon?

That would be great if it ends up being more than a rumour.

I'm sure I read that. It would be nice if the lenses were small and light and not just existing quite large lenses in MFT fit.

Hmm, all I want is a 25mm f1.8 with the same quality as the Nikon 50mm af-d that doesn't cost the earth. Nice build quality would be a bonus.

Allan,

If you don't get the ebay one let me know

Des.

Well, I was watching/bidding on two large Warthogs. Thankfully I was outbid on the second one ( someone paid £34!!!!). I got the first one for less than £14 delivered. Should be here today when I get home.
Still looking for a Billingham Hadley though to carry everything in.

Good stuff, I don't think you'll be disappointed. My G1 and 45-200mm fit snuggly in the Warthog so the larger one will be fine.

I used to have a Billingham 335. Great quality. I regret selling it now. :(

Do any G1 owners know...

Does it have auto sensor cleaning? I'm sure that my GF1 has an option in the menu but I can't see one in the G1's menu so I wonder if it does it on power on or off or doesn't do it at all.

The sensor is clean but I just wondered.

The sensor is cleaned automatically when the camera is turned on, but it can be selected from the menu at any time using 'pixel refresh' in the custom menu.

Bag was there when I got home. Superb! G2 and 45-200 fit in there nicely and its well padded too.

Now, should I get the smaller Warthog for my E-PL1? ( its ok to mention it here, it wears a Lumix G 14-45 lens so its half a G series!)

Ah Ha! And Thanks.

My GF1 has a "sensor clean" or maybe it's "clean sensor" option and the G1 deffo has that "pixel refresh" but I wasn'r sure what it was, I thought it might be something to do with mapping out dead pixels.

A Quick test of my new Macro lens: Minolta Rokkor 45mm F2. Currently I don't have a proper adapter, so this test was done using an MD-4/3 converter mounted on an OM - m4/3 adapter, which isn't a bad macro setup, covering 77mm FOV horizontally.

This is at F2:

Beautifully sharp in the centre but drops off rapidly towards the edges, even on m4/3. To be expected though really.

Centre crop:

Edge crop (each ruler division is 1/64")

Could be just DOF as I cannot guarantee 100% that the sensor is on the same plane as the ruler. Not bothered, I'm very happy with it's performance, especially for such a cheap lens!

Oh dear - just found the dpreview of the G3 (preview). Seems it uses the same battery as the GF2 and not the GF1, meaning only 270 shots per charge.

This is a real bummer as I find the GF1 battery only just acceptable, 270 shots sucks. I take it the G2 uses the same battery as the GF1? I might have to skip upgrading GF1 --> G3 and get the G2 instead.

Same as the G2, G1, and GH1.

Get the G2 and when the G3 prices start to drop ( as they invariably will) get a G3 with a spare battery.

My brief experience with the G1 has all been good so far and has got me thinking that I really do want a G3...

I read on the 4/3 rumours site that the GF2 isn't selling as well as the GF1. Perhaps this will influence the design of whatever comes next and is rumoured to be due in a couple of months?

Is that figure based on your experience with the battery in the GF1? The reason I ask is that I find the battery pretty good on the GF1 and I think that it's not always down to the battery life but how the hardware uses it, meaning that perhaps the new G3 might be more efficient in its use of the battery. I actually like the idea of camera manufacturers using the same battery across their product line because it means less cost for those making a move into a new model. I don't see any reason why they can't use the same battery pack and just improve the battery itself as well as the hardwares use of it (through firmware updates etc).

For me the G3 is what the GF2 should have been. I can't wait to play with one at work to see what it's like. It does seem to have and do everything! I'm also going to look at the lens line up and see if the IQ and range is good enough to sell the 500d and get the G3 to replace it!!

For anyone interested in getting one, or those just following the recent shortages, Mathers of Lancashire rang me yesterday to say they are getting the GH2 with longer zoom kit back in stock on Monday. He thinks they are getting about 4 delivered.

Just thought I'd give you a heads up :)

I only have the 20mm f1.7 with my GF1 and the 14-42mm with my G1. Other ranges seem to be covered and lenses seem to be promised but I've never seen any mention of a 14-42mm f2.8.

Yeah that's a shame as I do like the G series a lot! I'll wait to see if the G3 is significantly better then my 500D and if it is I may have to plumb for one, add the 20mm f1.7 and let my legs do the zooming!:D

Downloaded the video hack tool for GH1 but am having a bit of trouble , after choosing the changes to be made I try to save it to sd card but dont know what version to name it as .
Tried putting GH1_1.33/4 but it says camera wont recognise that .
I am upgrading from V1.3.

Any ideas where I am going wrong.

Julian

It may not accept the underscore and slash characters. Try naming it a word ( GH11334 or hack1334 or similar)
Allan

Needs to be 1 incrememnt above whatever you currently have installed. So GH1__134.bin should do it. Make sure you have the auto increment stuff set in the hack tool too.

Still not getting it , in the values box what should I enter in the version increment box before I press save firmware ?
Current firmware 1.3

Julian

Can't find the software now. Either way you need to make sure the camera sees i tas firmware 1.34 if you alreayd have 1.3 installed.

It's not one of the later GH1s that you can't hack?

Was wondering about that , I have not had any luck as yet , is there a serial number range about that shows whether its hackable or not ?

Julian

Just found out newer GH1"s with firmware V1.3 not hackable as yet .

Thanks

Julian

Well the 14mm is f2.8, the 20mm is 1.7. So you'll not be able to take pictures /quite/ as wide but I think it's worth walking a few steps backwards now and again to get the extra 1.1 stops :)

Hi Guys and Girls,

I have been following this thread on and off for a while. I am considering trading in my S3 Pro and downsizing!!

I dont think i would be able to afford a Gf3 when it comes out so I was wondering if it was worth investing in a GF1 and a few extra lenses or a GF2 and probably a single lens!

Will

I assume you mean the G3? If you want a viewfinder, get a G1 or G2 or else the GF1 with just the rear LCD. You could add a viewfinder later but the electronic one (EVF) is expensive.
Any one of those cameras will get you downsized ( and you will notice they all work a lot faster than your S3 Pro) but the G1 does not do video.
The Lumix 14-45 is a superb lens to get you going ( and to keep) then decide what you want out of the rest of the range. A lot of people just go for the 20mm ƒ1.7 and GF1 to get a small package.

I've never seen a 14-45 in a shop, only played with the 14-42 which is now the kit lens on the GF2, how do they compare?

Theres a lot about used and you can still get them online, but at a price!
Main differences are that the 14-45 has a metal mount and OIS switch on the body. Its also a little heavier.
Both lenses are very good but the 14-45 has the edge over image quality.
No reason not to get the silver one, its a matter of choice. I dont think it is any more prone to scratching than other colours. You can also get red!

Looks like the video hack for the newer GH1"s is out next week.

OK folks fine one really, what is low light performance like with the GF1/2, I know a lot is said about sensor size and not being as good as the NEX, I like to take shots of nightime landscapes & buildings and I was wondering if the GF1 is suitable for this.

I think the best thing to do is search for night images with the GF1. HERES a starter for you.
Obviously, it would be a good idea to get something like the 20mm pancake lens for that ( ƒ1.7) and ramp the ISO up a bit. I think its fine up to 400, but over that it gets a little noisy.
I took a few night shots with mine and I was more than happy with them
Allan

Thanks mate, it seems to me that its almost Lenses v Sensor, the GF1 has better Lenses (Panny & Olympus) v the NEX but the NEX seems to have the better sensor, argghhhhhh..... decisions decisions.

Noticed the GF1 and the 14-42 kit lens for £350 brand new, does this seem a good price?
