"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

Thank you Janice what great advice

She used to love that rose bush, that's why I spotted this rose and it is especially for her.

So sorry for your loss David and wish you all of the best!

I think I'm glad I bought a G2. I'm a little disappointed with the loss of controls in favour of the touch screen and the eye sensor switch on the EVF.

Better noise control would be something I'd hanker after, though.

Looking on Dpreview, they put a price of $699.99 for the G3 and kit lens ( 14-42) Amazon UK are showing the same as £699.99. Thats £230 dearer than the USA equivalent price.
No surprises there then!!!

Allan

I will get one, but not at that price! Seems to meet both my requirements over the gf1: better ISO performance and a decent evf.

I'll wait a couple of months and get one once the street prices stabalise.

Sod's law soon as I get hold of a good condition Gf1 they announce the G3.

The price will have to drop a loooong way before I get interested in the G3.

I am sure prices will drop a little once the major camera shops have stock and the initial rush to buy is over. I'm not sure there's all that much to tempt me away from my G2 and the way I use it though. Maybe I'll get one just before the G4 comes out!
Allan

Can anyone recommend a bag for the GF2? I want one that is as small as possible that will fit it with the 14-42 or maybe just the 14mm pancake. I am more interested in something that will provide padding while it's in my rucksack rather than something specifically to carry it around in.

I've just ordered an Op/Tech D-Compact for my GF1 & 20mm.
These pouches are about as minimalist as it gets. I've got one for my D90 too and it works perfectly.
Sizings etc on their website. Order from the States on the Bay ($=£).

Well now, reading through the announcement of the new G3 and the 'ePhotozine' First Impressions Review. I think Panasonic have been listening to what people have been saying . . . ?

The G3, is smaller than its predecessors, as far as I can gather by 25% . . . Faster on focus and ISO, retains all the positive points of the G series . . . Put a 'pancake lens' on the front and the question of pocketability with a view finder looms large again.

A round up quote from the 'ePhotozine, First impressions hands on review':

Initial impressions of the Panasonic Lumix G3 are very positive, particularly for the black model, with enhanced rubberised grip, the camera features new easier to use creative modes (high key, sepia, etc), film modes (vivid, landscape etc), and most importantly appears to further enhance image quality with a new sensor capable of improved noise performance. The other improvements such as improved focusing and continuous shooting speed, and a more compact body make an appealing system even more interesting, particularly if you want SLR style quality without the typical size associated with SLR sized cameras. The improved focusing speeds, really are impressive, and it makes you wonder when traditional SLRs at this price point are going to catch up, likewise with the easy to use and impressive touchscreen.

A practical (D)SLR for all but the dedicated anorak top end hobbyist and the professional???

From positive practical experience with the G1 and my D90 . . . I am watching the G3 with more than passing interest . . . :naughty:

Didn't they also say that the GH2 has better IQ at higher ISO? If that's the case it's disappointing that the brand new camera isn't as good as an older one  It doesn't seem like any camera maker is interested in offering better IQ with each new model.

I'd be sort of tempted if the higher ISO is better than my GF1 but I think I'd prefer an X100 type camera without the huge viewfinder on top like the G3.

Mmm . . . The image quality is perhaps not so much of an issue if you use the 14-45 or 20mm lenses. Seems the 14-42mm does not have quite the same edge? I find this with the 45-200mm as well, its OK but give me the 14-45 any day.

One looks at other manufacturers, they all seem to play the features game . . . Lets be honest, in the world of electronics, its often only a matter of software enable/disable, dont actually cost any more, but there has to be differences in models from the same manufacturer . . . Not saying 'right or wrong', but its marketing, (and political?) we are led by the nose . . . :bang:

Personally, I went back to basics 18 months ago, I'm no less happy, I'm free of the need to keep up with technology or to impress. Since I posted this afternoon re the G3, I've looked deeper . . . watch I will, but desire I do not have . . . the G1/14-45mm fits my needs just fine.

G1, G2, G10, GF1, GF2 all have the 'basic' sensor, which is standard 4/3 performance (IE a bit poor, 10 stop DR, poor noise performance)

GH1, GH2 have much better repsonse (11stop DR, massively improved Noise, as good as APS all bar a fraction)

G3 - seems to be somewhere in between. From the DPreview samples the noise performance seems every bit as good as GH2, but I suspect DR maybe lagging behind it a little though I'm not sure on that. Certianly has the GH2 AF speed, which is a good thing in it's favour.

I'm sorely tempted.

I too have just got a GF1, but I won't be giving it up for a G3!

I'm just getting to grips with it and I love the look and feel of it.

I'm sure that you fell in love with the look as well as the tech spec.

I love my GF1 + 20mm f1.7 but I don't know if I'd be happy with the handling with a zoom lens fitted so I like the idea of a G body with a standard zoom but as yet they don't make a 14-45mm f2.8.

PS. I understand the G hierarchy but I'm still miffed that some are saying that the G3 doesn't have the image quality of the GH2. In my innocents I'd expect quality to move on with newer models, silly me.

I actually like the GF1 & 14-45 in the hand. Left hand cradling the lens, right hand steadies the body. Anything much bigger than the 14-45 though does look a bit weird. In fact I'm planning to spend much of the week with my 14-45 set at 25mm as I'm kind of keen on seeing how good (and how much) the rumoured 25mm prime is going to be.

G1 and 7-14: <lovely pics posted>

Oh god that lens is lovely! I can feel my wallet twitching.

Thanks, it is a helluva lens, but at a helluva price and yes, BA 747-400 - superb :)

Noticed yesterday that a Blue Tit has decided to nest in a hole in the side of my house! So patiently sat with my G2 and 45-200 for a couple of hours this morning!

This was talken the other day with my G1 and heavily cropped.
This is an overflow pipe !!

Yes I think the hole did used to be an overflow. Been there for years but never noticed any Blue Tits before.

I've just received a new camera bag - Lowerpro Altus 120 from fotosense (direct from their web) £13! Is a fantastic little bag, can hold my G1 with 14-45 lens attached and then there is a side pocket which opens outwards which i can squeeze my 45-200 into. There is also another pocket which can hold SD cards etc. Brilliant little bag for day trips.!

C&C always welcome.

I saw a those on the Flickr group feed a couple of days back. They all stood out very nicely.

Small world!

I've just received my brand new used G1 and 14-42mm today so thanks Allan and Des...

What a fantastic camera! I'm very happy...

I've only done a few test shots around the house and garden but I'm very happy with the camera and the image quality. I've been leaving the ISO on auto and not worrying about it and whole image shots are fine and the lens IS allows really slow shutter speeds.

I'm keeping my GF1+20mm as it is and the G1+14-42mm will be kept as it is too so I now have a good pocketable MFT with f1.7 for low light use and one with a zoom for more general stuff. Excellent.

:)
Glad to hear you like it.

I have had a GF-1 for a while now and bought a G1 recently as I missed having a decent viewfinder in some situations. In fact I liked the G1 so much, I bought two. One came with a 14-45 which is why I sold the 14-42.

I bought my G1 kit for the 14-45 it came with to use on my G2, hence the sale of the G1. Glad you are enjoying it Alan,

I'm still happy :) and I'm still playing with it. I've just taken this...

I can't wait to take it out for a day now :)

Friend of mine has decided to take photographs of double glazed windows/doors frame styles on the exterior on some of their clients houses (with their permission) to include on a company website. They have had a pro' tog in the warehouse with slr's lot of lighting kit etc to do the range of products they have, so this mission is a afterthough I suppose.

He will be using a Panny GF-1 with either pancake 20mm 1.7 lens or 45-200mm lens. He has asked me for any tips I can give...If I was a expert I'd be doing it for a living

Any advice you can pass on which would help him in his quest. I have a circular polariser I could lend him, would that help any? also I said try to avoid taking photos around noon, harsh sun etc. Would this be on the right track?

Thanks

I've got a serious blonde question - Can you fit other lenses to the G1? Ie Canon or Nikon?? Really want to expand my range of lenses but the micro4/3 lenses are sooo expensive. Thanks xxxx

It looks like you can fit almost any lens to a micro four thirds camera. I haven't bothered but I spotted some adapters in a Speedgraphic catalogue and you can also see them on the website...

http://www.speedgraphic.co.uk/other_accessories/body_adaptors/140_0c.html

Some here in this thread are using adapters and lenses...

yes you can get adapters t ofit just about anything, but there will be no automatic aperture or focus control, so make sure you get full manual lenses.

You won't save much looking for Canon and Nikon lensses though, better looking for obscure mounts like Konica AR and Olympus OM, some real bargains to be had there since the mounts aren't used on anything current.

Allan,

I use a CCS Warthog for my G1 and 45-200mm. Can't say it's snug but it's well protected. Don't think it looks like a handbag. ;)

I think the Warthog looks ideal, thanks for the info, I am watching / bidding on a large version on Ebay that should fit my G2 and 45-200 in. Seems they dont make them anymore!

You can try the Olympus versions but if you go away from the Lumix range, I dont think you will get any stabilised lenses, if any, cheaper.

Allan

Aren't the likes of Sigma going to be making micro 2/3 lenses soon?

That would be great if it ends up being more than a rumour.

Allan,

If you don't get the ebay one let me know - I have three Warthogs. You could have one to try it out.

CCS went bust unfortunately, as they made great kit. Started off making protective bags for BBC kit I think. They were based around Bristol I believe.

I have a couple of their lens cases too and one is big enough to carry my GF1 with the 20mm attached.

Thanks, that sounds great, it ends in under two days so I'll see how it goes.
