"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

That's a hell of a lens - hate to think how much Canon owners would need to pay to match that reach!

How wacky does it look on a GF1 do you suppose?

I'm quite a Lomo fan. Spotted this the other day. The price however, put me off. Found a guy on eBay selling what is probably the original lens and a suitable adaptor within the UK for a considerable amount less.

I'm such a cheapskate.

We like cheapskates!

Are you going to buy these? I would be interested in the results if you do. Bit of a Lomo fan myself as you will see from my siggy.

Anyway, as if you dont need reminders of what rotten weather we have at the moment, heres me taking a ( photo of a) leak.........

Ordered late on Monday evening. Posted on Tuesday. Expected tomorrow. I'm a bit excited to try it.

Will post a few shots as soon as I get the opportunity.

Talking of experimental photography, I'm still waiting for my Pinwide to arrive.
:)

I'm interested to see how this works out as I quite fancy one. I made my own pinhole for my old E520, but it wasn't very succesful.

Got my GF1 today:clap:

BIG Congrats!! Shame the weather is SO dull at the mo.

I'm off to London tonight for dinner and a smooch round so I'm gonna take the GF1 and 20mm and see what I can get. I'm coming home before the hoards of people descend for the fireworks. Let's hope it's not too busy.

I'm not doubting you're very much the ladies man Andy but I reckon your best time for a smooch is later in the evening. ;)

I've not got the 20mm yet but after playing with the the gf1 for a bit, I might sell the g1 to get one.

Ordered the 45-200 lens from Park Cameras on Wednesday, checked with City Link at 2pm today to see what had happened to it. Estimated delivery date was Thursday 30th December. I checked City Link opening times for New Year, it said open till 5pm today so rang them at 2.30pm and what did I get Ansafone message "We have closed for the New Year, Open again next Tuesday, hope you have a Happy New Year".:bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::annoyed::annoyed:

I was going to order the same lens from Park Cameras just before Christmas but the lady there said they could not guarantee delivery before the new year. In the end, I got one locally, but the Devil made me buy a G2 kit to go with it!!
I know City Link have been having a bit of bad press lately, I expect they are taking on a lot of trade because of slow RM deliveries, they dont seem to be able to cope either.

I am sure you will enjoy your new lens when it eventually arrives, its a nice piece of kit

I'v had trouble with them too...

Best is Royal Mail Special Delivery in my opinion.

Definately agree Dave. I also ordered a Slik Sprint Pro tripod from Clifton Cameras yesterday, and it came at 8.30 this morning by Special Delivery. I wish they had sent my lens that way. I dread to think what state it will be in when it arrives - probably have to go back.

We stopped sending our orders out by City Link as one day we sent 4 parcels out, Scotland, Jersey, France and Kent, and every one ended up in a different place. Customers were not very happy.
We've been awating a next day delivery of materials from them now for 10 days and it still hasn't arrived. Hubby reckons that they all stayed home to watch the Rugby at Cardiff Arms Park this afternoon. I guess he's right. RM special delivery seems to be the best bet at the moment.

No post delivery today.....It's a Bank Holiday !!

Bloody thing still hasn't arrived. Gotta love the Royal Mail :(

Well, I have to praise Redsnapper, I ordered a tripod from them on Wednesday and it arrived Friday morning by courier. Not City Link though.

If it was from ebay it was probably spent Standard delivery which is usually 5 working days if you're lucky. RM special delivery I have found to be very good. Hope you get it ok after the hols.

How did you get on with the G2 is it a lot heavier than the G1?

Hi
Its actually a few gramms lighter ( according to Panasonic, 371 gms as opposed to 382 for the G1) although its not noticeable.

It has a couple of quite noticeable visual differences. The lcd screen seems brighter, I suppose its to compensate for all the mucky fingerprints!
The placement of some of the buttons is better too, but apart from the touch screen and HD video capability, it seems there isnt much difference between to two.
I suppose it just goes to show just how good the G1 is!
It is a very nice camera though, my GF1 has spent all Christmas in its bag and will probably be sold soon.:'(

Did you like the touch screen? I also have a Panasonic FX500 with touch screen, but I have never really liked it as I find it hard to set the aperture without several attempts at touching the right spot on the bar. Being a bit clumsy I also tend to touch the screen when I don't mean to.

I was contemplating a G1 or G2 a bit later on, because I like the tilt swivel screen. It's hard to get low level shots with the GF1 as my knees aren't too good from too much plodding up and down mountains, and from falling downstairs (completely sober) after Christmas. Can you see to take low angles without kneeling down with the G2?

I would keep my GF1 though as I really like its small size. Have you put any photos up yet with your new toy Allan. I would love to see them.

I certainly don't regret my move back to MFT from a Canon 5D MkII. It doesn't match the Canon for high ISO's or AF speed but is certainly good enough for me and the result of the smaller size is that I am taking far more pictures which, I guess is the important thing.

The ergonomics and EVF of the GH1 are superb and my only temptation now is that the GH2 is beckoning me. If anyone has tried one of these I'd be very interested in their feedback

Another advantage of the size is that the camera is much more discrete even with the 14-140 lens on it which makes it great for grab shots. I took the following picture at the Saints vs Harlequins match and with a bit of noise reduction I'm quite pleased with the results

Hi Barbara
Low or high angle shots are easy, just remember to turn off the EVF in case your hand goes in front of it and switches the view! You can see the screen easily at arms length.
I havent used mine much over Chrietmas, just a few family shots and pictures of the dog. Weather has been too gloomy and I havent been too well for the last week or two. It has given me plenty of time to read the manual though!
The touch screen is pretty easy to use and, everything is available in the menus so you dont need to use it. I do like the ability to fire the shutter with the screen though and moving the focus point around with your finger is fun. Its also handy swiping the screen to scroll through your photos and magnifying them with one touch.
I must admit, I do like using it and its not much bigger than the GF1. My original idea was to use the 14-45 on the GF1 and 45-200 on the G2. Now I'm not sure the GF1 will get much use. I have a couple other cameras too so I need to trim the equipment a bit to the ones I use mostly.

As soon as I take some decent pics / feel better / sun comes out, I will post a few pics.

Thanks Allan. I'm just wondering whether I can justify a second hand G1. Too late for yours as I see you have just sold it but I notice dazzajl has one.

I can heartily recommend the G1, its a really nice camera to use and of course the results are like the GF1.
I should get payment for mine within a day or so but will let you know if it doesnt go ahead for some reason.

Just found an interesting post on dpreview's Leica forum. Someone is comparing their £500 GF1 to their £8200 Leica M9 and lens.
HERE

Interesting comments about how good the Oly is and about the girl looking too purple!

Seems to me the GF1 is holding its little head above the water much better than expected at a saving of £7700 :naughty:

I've been out on the streets with my G1 + 20mm a lot recently.....just not sure what to do next....

I'm considering a GH2, as I've heard the AF speed is significantly improved, along with ISO performance?

Also the 14mm f2.5....the 20mmx2 feels a bit long on the tight streets....

or do I just get a GF2 kit....

or I'm also quite tempted to get a fairly long (100mm+), fast prime, plus adapter....to get those night shots that really kick the background lights into baubles.

What to do.....

I don't regret down-selling from my 5D2 at all...didn't like the Oly EP-1, but the Panasonic G-series is fantastic.
