"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

I looked at that G1 thread as my sister is looking for one but there's no lens with this one. I think she'd rather buy one with a lens.

I think it would be far better value for me than buying the GF1 EVF

The EVF for the GF1 is a godsend when you're shooting into the sun as it really is the difference between seeing something and seeing nothing. The image quality is woeful though. Which is a bit odd given that panasonic show how good they could have made it with the finder on the G1. I know it would have been larger but worth it to most buyers I'd have thought.

One with a lens does seem like a much better bet Alan. If size is not the major concern the 14-140 looks like a pretty much do all package.

It is the image quality that is putting me off dropping £130+ on the EVF - especially when for not a huge amount more I can buy a better viewfinder that is pre attached to virtually the same camera with a pivoting screen (The G1!)

I looked through the Panny EVF and to be honest, it wasnt that good, and got very jerky and grainy in low light.
I went for a used G1, the viewfinder is superb, in fact the whole camera is amazing, and for me, its now easier to handle then my GF1.
Now, I am in a quandry. I liked the G1 so much, when I went to buy a new lens for it I came home with a new G2 kit. So, I also have the GF1, and to be honest, with the lenses I will be using on it ( 14-45 and 45-200) I cant see the benefit of keeping the GF1. I agree, with a 20mm lens its almost pocketable., but I dont think I will be getting a 20mm ( run out of money now)
It incredible how within a day, your whole camera setup can be in danger of changing!
There will be some goodies in the classified section later.........actually theres one now!

Quick update, for anyone waiting for their free photography pack including Photoshop Elements 9, mine has just arrived. I sent the form in on the 3rd of November so just over 6 weeks :D

It got there at last then. I just sent mine off. Is the Elements just PC or is it Mac and PC?
Allan

Two discs, one for Windows and one for Mac. There is one code for Elements and one for Premier Elements. Each code can be used a maximum of two times.

Thanks for the update Wills, sent mine off a few days after you so hopefully mine shouldn't be too long now either. It will be handy alongside Lightroom 3 which just bought.

Clean and sharp.

Well done..!

My Dad decided he would like a G2 twin lens kit like mine. Mine was a G2 with 14-42 kit and a seperately boxed 45-200. I rang the camera shop I bought mine from but they were awaiting stock on a black body, so I gave Jessops a ring.
Me." Have you got a G2 twin lens kit?
J. " No, sorry, they are special order from Panasonic"
Me " Oh, ok, er, have you got the G2 kit with 14-42?"
J Yes sir, thats £469.99
Me, Have you got a 45-200
J Yes, thats £268.99.
Me Ok, so whats the price of the twin lens kit.
J, That will be £799 sir.
Me, Er, ok.........

Is it my maths?

hows the high iso performance on these g series? Any better than another?

GH2 is the best high ISO 4/3 sensor camera for high ISO, then the GH1. The GF1, G1 etc are all worse than these 3, but still better than basic Oly DSLRs like the E5x0 etc and the old L series panasonics.

ISO 3200 useable as long as no shadow lightening required on my GH1, ISO 1600 will stand up to basic PP, and ISO 800 is very good indeed, better than ISO 200 on my Oly.

Went out for lunch yesterday to Canterbury and it snowed so much it took us 6 hours to drive home 6 miles!
Anyway, this morning I went out to get some logs for the fire....

Maybe I'm in Surrealistic mood but if that a body I can see to the left of the picture?

Wow Alan, 1mph certainly won't get points on your licence for that "High" Speed:lol:

My partners daughter near Southend on Sea did 16 miles in just over 3 hours! now that was speeding !!

You sure had it worse on your side of the Thames

Thanks for your reply, I currently use a 30d, and I was taking pictures in a church the other day and was just using 3200. I kind of want to work towards a smaller body like 1 of the g series to complement my canon.

Hmm, looks like an Ice Hockey Goalkeeper, but its just wood with a big axe ( maul) to chop it with.

David, it may have only been 6 miles but we used up nearly 3 gallons of fuel keeping warm!

Allan

As long as you kept warm Alan that's all that matters, my car is covered in snow and it can stay that way

We went out for lunch into Canterbury, it was nice and snow free. About an hour later it was 4 inches deep and everything was at a standstill. It took us an hour to get out of the car park. The problem with Canterbury is that all rouds out go uphill, it only takes one person who revs too much and spins the wheels, and everybody has to wait. The worst thing was, I left my Pannys at home and only took the Nikon, so cant post any pics here!

Go on cheat a bit

I finally got around to buying a timer remote for the GH1, I bought something similar for the Olympus E-1/E-3 last year but the GH1 is better suited to the task as it comes with a power supply (£70 for the E-1/E-3 or D700) and it can shoot 16:9 natively. With snow predicted to be on the way I set it up the other day facing out a window with this video as the result:

http://www.vimeo.com/17915002

It's quite entertaining to put together and always interesting to see what the final result actually looks like as during the shot sequence itself you can't really see much happening. Given it's now relatively cheap and easy to do would definitely recommend it.

John

Hi John
That looks very impressive. Just as you notice the reflections coming in on the right side, the snow appears.
Nice music too!

Some snaps of the Civic after it's 5 mile journey through snow up to 12" deep in places! Not very interesting images but gve a good idea of ISO 3200 handling.

Whenever I use my GF1 I'm impressed. I wonder why people in other threads doubt the IQ?

Janice, No2 is brilliant I think.

Woof Woof, Can't choose which I like the best.

Furthest I've been of late, open back door and click the shutter button, result is this rubbish pic.

It wont be long before there will be winter pansies in your baskets, then spring flowers in the garden.
Anything nice happening for Christmas?

Not really Janice, think we will stay at home, Partners daughter is in Rayleigh usually go there, but with the snow and ice would rather stay at home. I have had a nasty bout of a bad chesty cold and sore throat , just beginning to ease now but still driving me up the wall. Was going to see Doc this morning but he did not get to surgery , had an accident in his car on the way !

Oops!

We are staying at home this year.. 2 boys (23 & 20) they dont want to go anywhere so we will be doing exactly as we like without pandering to the whims of others!! :D

Hope your chest eases up before Christmas.

Don't forget to take some indoor shots with that 20mm f1.8 pancake lens. Available light etc.

I'm hoping to go to Kazakhstan on 30th but my visa hasn't arrived yet and I'm worried about the weather and flights getting cancelled. :'(

Here's a little pointer for you:

SETTINGWHITE BALANCE FOR INFRA RED ON A GH1

Like false colour IR? Well the GH1 has a couple of useful features for it: Live view is pretty good and enables you to see through the filter in most conditions so it will save you a bit of hassle, especially if using a legacy lens as IR does not focus at the same point as viisble light.

It also exposes correctly without compensation through the filter, which is very useful!

There is a major downside. The GH1 has very very poor white balance control. If you'r going to shoot mono it's not a problem, leave the white balance at whatever, however if you liek the red/blue false colour, you will need to to trick the white balance.

You actually need a white balance of around 2100K for an R72 type filter, which the GH1 does not allow for. Setting a custom white balance is the only way - but none of the accepted normal methos of doing this for IR work(pointing at sunlitgrass throughthe filter gives you a bright greeny yellow toned image which is hideous)

So what to do? Get yourself something fluorescent orange, like Hi vis gear or similar. It has to be orange, yellow will not work, Red will not work. Without the IR filter in place set the white balance from the orange item. I used this:

P1010120.jpg

And job done!

You will now have a decent white balance that can be used to produce red and blue toned images, like this:
