"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

Has anyone bought one of the new 45-150mm lenses yet? I've seen one for a very good price and the limited information I can find on it suggests that it's considerably better than the 45-200mm.

I'd rather sacrifice a bit of reach in order to gain better image quality. :)
Cheers,
Si

I have both lenses, and they're very similar in terms of image quality where they overlap. The 45-150 is so light that it's harder to hand hold (I'm not finding the OIS to be all that effective). If the size/weight were not important to me I'd have the 45-200mm as it's cheaper and goes longer. It is a lot bigger and heavier, though.

Thanks Graeme,

That's muddied the waters a little! :D Looks like I'll have to do some serious thinking and reading!

Well I have been realy strugling, no picture taking for the past few months of and significants . . . need to get th mojo going, said that a few times this year, the G1 and the Nikon D90 just sit in the botton of the cupboard . . .

I went into Comet today, 30%, 50% and 60% off, the locasts had been but still a few bargins, I wanted a pair of head phones for my hifi. No luck, fresh out of quality headphones. So a wander round, spied a few cameras, have a look, spied a Lumix TZ30, was looking at it on line only the other day. Took my fancy then, simple P&S, but controlable if needs be, 20x zoom, bit OTT but dont have to be all out, HD vidio and £160.00!

Could not resist that one, taken a few shots indoors to try out, its dark and wet outside.

I'm impressed and no flash!!! Out tomorrow deep sea fishing, take it along, see how it fairs in the cold and tough conditions aboard a 23ft fishing boat, watch out you cod, see if I can get the vidio to work?

Has my mojo been re vitalised?

but with the G1 the magnified view makes manual focus relatively easy if slower than auto focus which is usually ok for what I take pictures of and I therefore use manual lenses most of the time on, my G1.

I'm clearly being stupid with my G1 as I can't get the magnified view when I use legacy glass. I need mf on the focus wheel and then push in the wheel don't I? Or does it only work with manual focusing with auto focus lenses?

It's a two button press... you press the left arrow button and then press "set." It's a faff but I'm used to it and can do it without taking my eye from the VF.

I believe that on later models you can assign a button and make it a one button press.

Alan I just got that Sigma 30mm F2.8 and I was testing it on (among others) a G1 : Hmm, a very nice looking combination. You might look into one if the £99 special offer is still going.
I'm not sure about focus accuracy on my G1 though ... need more testing, but the surface finish seems so close, like a real match.

How are you finding the Sigma 19mm? I've been thinking about getting one for a whiles as I'm finding my 14mm to be a little too short. I can't afford the Panasonic 20mm at the moment so wondered if this was worth a shot for £99?

A question for those using wider angle legacy lens (say 24-50mm).

How do you manage focus? I have 3 legacy lenses (135, 200 & 300mm) and just use the zoomed live view via the EVF for focusing. Is that the best way for shorter focal lengths, or is there a better alternative?

Cheers,

Simon.

I don't see the need for it, I have the mZuiko 17mm on my e-P1, a very nice focal length.

Likewise - I have the 20mm Panasonic (bought before the Sigma came out) so no need for the 19mm. Have considered the 30mm but the 60mm equivalent field of view seems a bit of an odd focal length - slightly too long for a normal, slighty too short for a portrait lens.

i went on an off camera flash course with my hahnel wireless triggers, G1 and super-takumar legacy glass and i was pleasantly surprised by the results. there is still some life in the old G1 yet

Now those are impressive - especially the last one! They certainly prove what the m4/3 cameras are capable of in the right hands!

Sorry, I seem to have messed up my post a bit there as I wanted to ask you how you were finding the 30mm which I believe is the one you've got. I'm torn between the 19mm and the 30mm as a stop gap until I can afford the 20mm.

Stunning shots, from the old dog G1

So you want to buy one of these £99 lenses until you can afford another £200-ish ...
I think you should buy the 19mm : angle of view should be nice, my 17mm is nice. I've tried the 14mm, didn't like such a wide view personally, and I have the kit zooms for that job.
The best lens I have is still the 45mm, no matter what others we're discussing.

Oddly in testing this Sigma was a fast focuser in low light than my 45mm, and I got the sigma for that specific job : LUCKY!

I know it does seem odd as its not a huge amount of difference, but I was hoping to pick one up before Christmas. I've got young family coming over for Christmas day who I haven't seen in a while and unfortunately I just can't scrape enough together for the 20mm in time.
I'm not even sure the focal length is one I'd use a lot either so I'm reluctant to drop too much money on it.
I have purchased my sister a G2 for Christmas so the more lenses we have to play with on Christmas day, the better!

Thanks for you thoughts on the lenses though, I do value the opinions of you all in this thread as you're honest and use your equipment properly to give it a good go.

Young family : fast focus is more important than anything, so the Sigma 19mm should be good indoors as the F2.8 is just bright enough. The Lumix 20mm might even have frustrated you for that job.

i've got a 20mm and an energetic toddler and it's a real pain, by the time it has focused he is off!

There is fast focus mode, does use more battery, and can be annoying at times but it does continue to maintain focus even without the shutter button being pressed.

what do you mean, fast focus mode? the AFC setting?

Sorry its called quick AF mode, with the 20mm it constantly tries to focus, doesn't do it with the kit lens

although i read the manual when i first got the camera i just use the same old basic functions, i'll have a go with the AFC to see if makes a difference. the 20mm is a great little lens but it is just so slow.

You don't have long, look for a £99 deal. I got mine from ... oh yeah, still there ... http://www.cameraworld.co.uk/ViewPr...ma+19mm+f2.8+EX+DN&CAT_CODE=2&SUBCAT_CODE=368
Order the right one! :) (err, not the NEX)

I didn't realised Camera World had it at that price, I was planning on ordering from SRS on eBay. I've got a Camera World close to me so I might pop over and see if its that price in store.

Chilly shots from today, all Rokkor 55mm f1.7 or 28mm f2.8...

Have people stopped using their Panny's?

Another cold day. It was cold and it was drizzling and it was quite windy and there were very few people about.

All Rokkor 28mm...

It was actually worse than it looks in the pictures, but I like to walk the beach :D

Nice pictures there, it was beautiful round here after the hard frost the other night, but unfortunately working 8-5 every day I get very little daylight time to get out with the camera.
Hopefully this weekend I'll be able to and I may even get pictures of something other than our puppy!

Well that didn't work! I managed to take the camera out today and all I took pictures of was the puppy!! We'll try again tomorrow!

Just ordered my Sigma 19mm though so hopefully that'll be here in time for Christmas. I've got my sisters G2 this year so she'll be wanting to try all my stuff!

I find that I go out with the intention of taking pictures and the camera stays firmly in the bag.

I'm wondering if I should get the Sigma 19mm whist it's cheap. Will be interested to know how you get on with it.

Well, I'd like to see some puppy pictures :D

Here's some more from my chilly walk.

These are via Photobucket and they don't look as nice here as they do on my screen, which is a shame, they look nice on my screen and much sharper than they look here.

I'd taken my G1 plus Minolta Rokkor 55mm f1.7, 28mm f2.8 and 135mm f3.5 out with me and looking at the pictures I'v every pleased to get these results with a cameras worth, what? Uner £100? and three lenses which could all be bought for under £100 too. These cameras and legacy lenses seem like veryu good value to me :D

I saw your frosty pictures - went back to a set last week and thought I'd put up some more. The fog and the frost makes such a serene picture!

Those shots look like camera damaging conditions, nice capture!

I have a 25mm f0.95 but I wanted a Rokkor 28mm f2.8 because they're so cheap that I feel ok about taking it to places like this where I wouldn't want to take the 25mm f0.95. The replacement value of the camera and the lens must be, what? £100-125?

Cheap fun! :D

Despite the wind, rain and sand I managed to change lenses from 28 to 135mm and back again (I couldn't get any useable shots with the 135mm as my shutter speeds were way too low in these conditions even after boosting the ISO) and there wasn't even a suggestion of a single dust bunny on the sensor when I checked later at f16.
