"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

Talking about Batteries. I am going to get a spare battery for my new GX1 and wonder if other would suggest getting the Panasonic original or an afar market version ?

I got a GX1 from another forum member off of here and he included a third party battery which works fine so far. I have heard stories where third party batteries stop working in Panasonic cameras after a firmware update so be warned.

I have a couple third party ones for my Pentax, they don't last as long (about 20% less juice than the original ones) and they are not very accurate to send information regarding their remaining power but they cost 5£ each as opposed to 30£ odd for a Pentax branded one.

I updated my G1 to the latest firmware when I got it as the previous owner hadn't, but I didn't realise until afterwards that this would block third party batteries. I bought a genuine Panasonic one to keep as a spare now do I don't have to worry about it again.

I have just bought a third party battery from '7dayshop.com', they list it as working with all curent firm ware. Arived, pluged on charger, would not charge . . . :bonk: had I been caught? No destuctions with battery but I put it into camera, switched on, everything worked. Took it out, put on charfer again, it started charging, now OK.

I can only assume it needed a camera cycle, a sort of 'format' ???? I'm not in to the latest 'firm wares', found they cure one problem and create 2 others, same as computer updates, avoid them like the plague.

So, I will not be updating my G1 'FW' works fine the way it is.

Old stick in the mud . . . CJS

They should be done for that as it is unfair practice in my book and probably is in the statute book if the 3rd party battery makers were to hire some smart lawyers

I bet the auto industry could not get away with doing something similar, a stretch of the imagination yes but would for example Ford get away with saying there was an update available for the cars computer and then afterwards you find that you can only fill up with Ford's own petrol at a chain of Ford petrol stations.

i do like on the G1 the facility to review in the viewfinder and the way the menu saves your last entry for quick use..for me that is the grid for horizons

What a sexy looking body the Oly OMD EM 5 has in black, obscene price though.

I don't think it really is obscene... I mean the GX1 + the EVF is 600-650 and by most accounts the Oly is a better camera so the £350 premium is quite justified. In absolute terms though without reference to other cameras yes it is on the expensive side.

Excuse my ignorance for a minute here, but are the OM-D and the EM-5 actually the same camera? The OM-D is the range and the EM-5 the model?

Actually it does look great doesn't it.
I particularly like the two control wheels on the top and the bundled flash that can be used in commander mode to trigger others.
Oh, and the curve control looks good too! ;)

The G3 I currently use is good but two things I do not like about it are the tiny thumbwheel at the rear and also the ease at which the iso can be accidentally altered.

All good reviews so far for it.

Joking aside it looks a possibility for me, but only if I sell the beast.

Anyone got any recommendations for a good hand strap to use with my GF3?

I got this one recommended by Janice here on TP → Click Here it's not too bulky but very comfy on the wrist. It's never off the camera these days and it scrrunches up well when putting camera away in pocket or bag.

Camera GF-1, lens 20mm & 100-300mm

Just wondering what you guys do on holiday when taking photos, Raw or Jpeg?

Reason I ask is 99% of the time I usually shoot raw and the PP afterwards in Lightroom or Elements9. On my holiday this year I can see me taking hundreds of photos using the GF1, would you still shoot raw or shoot jpeg to save you a lot of PP afterwards and cut down on amount of storage cards needed, or the hassle finding a computer in a strange country to get pics onto cd to clear space on a card? Taking the laptop is out of the question.

Thanks looks like it would do the trick nicely. Thanks

Is it me or has the price of the G3 and GH2 both risen over the last month? I was expecting them both to fall with the recent rumours of potential new models and all the newest stuff coming to market like the Olympus OM. There have been rumours of a GH3 in the pipeline for September but GH2 seems to be going up in price if anything. Maybe this is due to shortage of supply.
I want the EM-5 but also think the price is too high.

not having the mirror vibrations has improved my hand held shots a lot
cheers

I don't follow you Geof, have I missed a discussion?

Wasn't aware that would be a problem in todays DSLR's

dont really know who i should discuss with actually
i put on a thread and no one responded so i thought to just make observations as i learn more about my G1
its not important to get a reply, and i thank you for yours
cheers
geof

the problem with all slr's d or otherwise is mirror vibrations at certain hand held speeds and even on a tripod
hence the mirror lock facility
i am getting a bit shaky and always use iso 100 if possible so a lot of my hand held shots are in the lower end of the speed range
cheers

it does seem that way ! :(

and it's not just the panasonic. other makers have the prices up a bit as well. I can't remember what I was looking at, but I was highly disappointed with the prices.

That's why DSLR's have mirror lock-up surely, Mal. Or am I missing something too!!! :)

i can at last perhaps join in here...the thumbwheel on my G1 is on the front but if one isnt careful and clicks it to set over and under exposure, slight movement of it can ruin your shot...this has happened to me recently...

Yes Janice I know what mirror lockup is and what it is for!! I just did not think it would be a problem in today's modern DSLR and was there just for purists.

Yes, they have mirror lock up but you have to use it... and then you can't see a thing. With mirrorless you don't have to make a decision to select and use mirror lock up and you can see while you're shooting. Great stuff! And this allows hand held shots at lower speeds than with a DSLR :D

Must be a lot to do with the size and shape of our hands and how we handle our camera differently Geof as I have never had that problem with my G1.

Yes exactly! :)

I was agreeing with Geof that you don't have to do that with these mirror-less models!

Plus there's the noise. My 20D (now sold) used to sound like someone throwing an anvil into a tin bath, my 5D is a little better but still too vocal. cameras should be seen and not heard.
