hi i need help

i have been trying to color splash in this software for nearly 5 weeks now and i have (had it up to here i would love adobe photoshop cs3 but i cant afford it )
please please please someone give me some instructions on how to do it im losing the will to live

We call that selective colouring

take your image copy to new layer on your top layer desaturate it, add a layer mask, then select your brush tool make the brush soft, and the right size, with black selected, slowly erase where you want the colour to appear hope that make sense

in paintshop pro you can also just select an area I think, for example with the wand or with the lassoo tool, and then desaurate that area only.
for example, select a yellow cab in new york, inverse the selection and desaturate the selection
but you might end up with hard edges unless you feather them

the multi layer mask way is the proper way to do it
