Guess what I'm doing today! :(

Is there an easy way to do this that I don't know about? I've just done the first coat on the landing ceiling (the smallest of the two as I've got the living room to do next) and I look like I've been target practice for the birds :thumbsdown: I'm using a roller on a pole :)

No smutty comments please :D
 
nope...I have no idea other than let someone else do it! You are a good girl Cheryl!
 
No... just skint & can't afford to pay for anyone else to do it! :lol:
 
yes but look at the self satisfaction you'll get when you've finished...I just want a place of my own that I can paint too :jealous emote:
 
if your getting splattered with paint you may be overloading it, if your not, you could get a roller with a cover. B&Q do them
 
A couple of tips.....firstly cover your tray with a plastic shopping bag, saves having to clean the tray when your done and allows the roller to be stored in over night when your'e not done.....stops the air getting to the paint and drying out.
Preperation is important.....clean the ceiling with sugar soap first.
Use a good paint....cheap paint just means more coats.....more work.
For small cracks and stuff....I'd recomend Polly filler paint stuff, can't remember what it's called but I've used it and it does a good job, It's flexible and doesn't re-crack.
Oh and do your cutting in first.

The ceilings are newly plastered, so no need for cleaning :D The first coat was 50/50 emulsion & water as directed by the plasterer hence very watery & splashed everywhere :(
That's a good idea re the plastic bag - too late now, but will remember that when I come to do the walls and start the next tray :)
 
Just a thought if your ceilings are flat as in no artex instead of using a roller try using a paint pad instead as it's flat no splashing also uses less paint and is quicker than a roller.

Nothing can stop the 50/50 mix getting everywhere if you use a roller. That's probably why most professional painters use a brush.

I can't win either way - I tried a brush & all the paint mixture just ran down the brush so I ended up with more down my arm :lol:
Nearly finished now - at least it's drying quick :)
 
Many years ago I worked as a painter and decorator refurbishing public houses....we never done the 50/50 thing.....All brushes, even gloss can be put in a bag if your not finished and going to be using again the next day....some people add a drop or two of turps to the bag...the fumes keep the bristles soft. Prefference really but I prefer using a roller and think it gives a better finish than a pad BUT the room needs to be cleared or covered well.
 
I'd agree Ken, I found the pad thing a bit of a pain to use actually. Roller == no resistance, pad == lot of resistance.
 
ah watered down paint, yep goes absolutley everywhere, and it is advised for new plaster as it helps it breathe (if that makes sense), so I'm told, otherwise it can crack.
 
See I was told it helps the emulsion bond to the wall rather than just the top surface of the plaster.

The plaster is still gonna be quite porous, I guess, so it'll help drag the paint into it a little more. Maybe?
 
Yeah that's right but a cheap emulsion for undercoat is much the same....
 
I'd ask the Mrs for you as I spend most of the time lying on the couch farting.

On the other hand, when it comes to ceilings, she spends most of her time lying on her back staring at them :naughty:

In the distant past when I used to still do household chores my method was get the paint on the brush and don't muck about scraping half of it off to run down the side of the tin until you can never get the lid on again, and for tall ceilings I used to tie the brush to a pole.

I always went around the edges first with a 1" brush after applying masking tape.

Don't pull the tape off until the paint is completely dry or you'll peel a 2ft square sheet of drying emulsion off along with it.
 
Roler on pole, paint ceiling in 10 minutes, takes 10 days to clean up.
Roler with cover, cept scrapeing the paint and ruining the finnish.
Paint pad threw away in frustration.

I am a photographer not a painter, her indoors said paint, I am a painter come cleaner. Made the mistake of painting the darkroom, If you can paint the darkroom you can paint the bedroom. Ever get the feeling you might as well get on and do it cause you aint gona win.

i need to paint my living room, but i dont know where to start as i cant move the sofas out of the room as i have no space so im gonna have to cover it all up well!
