What does the expression 'Painting a car' mean.

I know its to do with the subject being a car and I guess painting is to do with lighting but not sure how this is done.

Cheers.

Although its popular with cars you can light paint just about anything. It refers to setting the camera on a slow shutter speed and lighting the subject with a torch or similar by moving it across the subject to light it. Hence the expression 'painting'. You have to keep the torch / light moving to get an even light on the subject.

Painting a car or anything else refers to using a torch to illuminate it rather than ambient or flash.

You can do it with anything - I do it with models

Set your camera to bulb and away you go
