I'm moving house and have to choose some paint as the colours there are beyond belief (red, dark blues, bright yellow gloss :puke: ). I've looked at the Dulux site but I'm just finding it really difficult to decide. Maybe I'm getting a touch of the Mavis's . How have others picked their colours? What colour would you paint a wee boys room that doesn't get much sunlight, cornflower blue looks a bit depressing. I feel a million testers coming on .

Yellow

Cream with an accent wall in whatever colour his (or his dad's) football team are.

We've just had our hallway painted yellow (can't remember the shade), and living room painted a light green (melon sorbet, from Dulux, to be precise :))

Both look great now - just flooring to do in the living room, and new carpet for the stairs and it'll look top banana :)

my bedroom faces northeast, so only get some sunlight in the mornings. painted my room Sunlight yellow? (homebase colour) and my room is now one of the brightest in the house

I'm a great believer in magnolia walls and white ceilings and when I was a painter/decorator, that was about 75% of what we ended up doing, often to cover up some people's original choices when they realised that a whole room in bright yellow was a bit much!

Since it sounds like you'll be covering up some strong colours, I would suggest a few coats of the final colour to try to cover the strong ones - or even plain white (whatever's cheapest!)

Oddly enough that's my wall colour too! Make the walls a neutral colour and add your own/his own highlights with furnishings/posters. This will allow for his changing tastes over time.

Thanks everyone!

Thanks Nod, that's what I'm doing, painting everything with two coats of cheap white then putting the more expensive colour on top. Think it with be a hint of green or a hint of turquoise. Well, I've got about nine testers to confuse myself with including one from the Dulux light and space range so I'm getting started. I should take before photos. They'd be quite funny until I remember it's me that's got to paint over it :)

Thanks for that, posting a picture of your melon sobet or any pale greeny or pale turquoisey rooms would be a great help if anyone fancies showing off their handywork. If not, thanks anyway folks

Matt black:lol:

You could always do a mural in your boys room, or wall paper it

As for choosing what colour where, we looked at what we had and what we wanted the room to reflect (knock through lounge), and went for a dark plumb colour (Garnet Symphony 1). Sounds a bit dark, but when you consider a lot of white celing space and woodwork, and shutters: it`s not bad, and we`re happy with it.

My (much photographed) daughters room is easy....... pink  but she did take a couple of weeks to decide on the exact colour.

My dad's a painter/decorator and that is very true. Maggy on walls and white ceilings. Nice and easy and looks quite bright
All white rooms are a bit too over kill imo.

Rule of thumb used to say cold room, use warm colours, and vice versa. So i'd not be using blue in a room that get little sunchine unless I could warm it up with artifical lighting.

Could this be the time to watch 60 minute makeover for inspiration... on what NOT to do? ;)

At present I am painting four panels for a customer for their bedroom the theme is Star Wars. The room is a light green (Don't know the shade) and is quite dull the panels are white two with Stormtroopers and the other two are Rebel Pilots no idea on the lighting but should look cool. Just a thought if it is a dull room you could get some large posters and change the rooms feel or if there are any printers in your area get some large prints done. I use a guy in the local mall he has a large format printer the kind you see doing the canvas prints, like I said just a thought.
