Hi all,

I've been asked by friends to recommend a point and shoot camera - I've not looked at this end of the market for a while so I'm not sure what to suggest. Anyone bought recently or have any suggestions in this sort of price range?. The market generally seems saturated with brands and multiple models so I'm not suprised they're having a hard time choosing anything.

Any help appreciated. :)

Thanks,
Jeremy.

Fuji generally make good 'cheap' compacts.

What features are required ?
eg. splashproof, long zoom, RAW, manual modes, blink detection, size etc etc

Thanks Daniel, not sure on feature list really - there doesn't seem to be that much between them all although I appreciate some have longer zooms but I'd imagine that would be at the cost of optical quality. Splashproof/small enough to pocket are probably on the list, the intended recipient isn't 'in to' photography so RAW etc. wouldn't be on the list of wants.

I know the IXUS's used to be the way to go - but now not so sure between that and the Coolpix range.

Still no idea what to recommend for them!

I would suggest they go into an electronics store (Curry's / Comet etc) and have a play with them on display. At that price they really are all going to be similar quality with just the odd feature to separate them.

Large supermarkets usually have a good stock of compacts too.

One feature that is really worth having is a rechargeable battery and charger - compacts eat AAs for breakfast for some reason.

Fair point with the batteries - it was something that crossed my mind too - I think it's supposed to be a birthday gift or something so I have a feeling going to have a play with them may not be an option... oh well, thanks for suggestions anyway!

That Ixus 100 mentioned above is a fantastic deal. 3 of my friends have bought one in the last month. Unbelievable value! If you don't mind the fact the camera is bloody tiny (hardly a negative), it's great for standard P&S use.

And there's always CHDK if you want to get a bit more manual control out of it...

Its such a good deal I have crumbled and just bought one my self online. Nice small and light, ideal for RAF basic training snaps. Well maybe not bullet proof...

Looks good, I will pass that on as a suggestion thank you! :)

Another vote for whichever Canon Ixus you can get in your price range :)
