I want a P&S to take to places where a DSLR is not appropriate, Disney parks, parties ect. and want to get quality as close to a DSLR as possible, but be compact, and not cost £2500 LOL. Price is not really an issue, as I have lined up a Canon G10 as the front runner atm. It has all the controls of a DSLR, shoots RAW and I know the quality is good, I dont think it does shallow dof very well does it? isnt it something to do with the fact the sensor is so small that it gives quite a wide dof?

Anyway haver i selected the best P&S? or are there others that can give me better quality
 
There is a Sigma p+s that has an APS-C sensor in it, that might be worth a look. No idea how much they are now, but they were quite pricey when they came out at first...
 
I would recommend the G10 very highly. The controls are well thought out and there enough shooting modes and scenes for most people. The one drawback however is from ISO400 and up it becomes noisy; it's fine at 80, 100 and 200. The image quality is such that I think you can adjust the white balance on the RAW image and your set to print.
 
Pansonic G1 Micro 4/3rds :shrug:

Gives you all you could want from a DSLR in a very small package, or maybe the Oly E-420 twin zoom kit - again very small and so much better than a P&S (Especially if you are used to the output from a DSLR)
 
I have an IXUS 870IS (SD880 in the US) for P&S duty. It's easily the best P&S camera I've owned.

As to what it is capable of - have a look at some of these:

In fact, in summing up he stated:
This is easy: just buy an SD880 if you want a pocket camera. It's ideal for scenics, travel and landscapes, even as your only camera.

I'd pass on the Canon G10, since the images from from this SD880 look the same or better (less distortion at wide), and the SD880 handles much better.



I'm happy with that - he knows an infinite amount more about photography than I do :)

hmmm they look as big as a Nikon D40, might be a bit too big tbh, i understand the quality wont be DSLR, i just want the best of the bunch ;)

dpreview says its really slow and the iso is bad even at low numbers, how do you find it?

That looked so promising but its a fixed 28mm and thats no good really, shame cos it ticked the right boxes at first
 
anybody got a Nikon Coolpix P6000 looks promising?
