Oyster card or monthly ticket

Hi peeps, need a bit of advice.

I'm moving jobs (same company) and rather than driving to Burgess Hill to work I'll be taking the train to Oxford Circus. So I'll be picking up the train from Upper Warlingham to Victoria then on the tube to Oxford Circus. Reverse for going home.

So would it be cheaper to use an Oyster card or get a monthly ticket.

Assuming the local station is still in the LT zones, then buy a monthly ticket loaded onto an Oyster card. No more expensive and lots easier. If you use Oyster PAYG it'll work out much more expensive over a month. Ideally, will your new job offer you a season ticket loan and buy an annual one
 
Is it going to be a 5 days ( Mon - Friday) or does it include weekends as well?

Based on working Mon to Firday, Oyster PAYG for Zone 1 is £2.10 one way so £4.20 return per day. So based on approximately 23 working days a month this would be £96.60. The monthly zone 1 travel card is £116.80, so I would say go PAYG. You can setup an account on line with an auto top up, when it the amount reaches about £8, it will automatically topup with money being debited from your account.

I do not know how linking your train ticket to oyster works, so you may also want to look into Hugh's suggestions.

He's traveling in from zone 6. So one zone 1-6 monthly ticket would cover the lot. PAYG is OK, but its a further £10 day to get in and out. Making a total of £14.20. A zone 1-6 monthly ticket (on Oyster) is £213.50. That means that the monthly ticket becomes cheaper after he makes 16 journeys to work in a month. Of course Andy has the further advantage if he does it this way he won't pay any further fares to TFL for any incidental travel. So if he wants to go out in town on a Saturday for example, because he already has a travel card

It will be weekends as well as in the week. I'll have a look at loading a travel card onto Oyster as that sounds interesting.

My wife travels to Victoria then out to Hammersmith and it's about £260 a month so now I just need to decide if this is more convenient as there will be times when I'll be going out in London of an evening.

I've been using a monthly Oyster from Sutton in Zone 5 to London Bridge for 5 or 6 years. Definitely the way to go.

If you can afford the up front cost, 3 and 6 month and annual Oysters can save a bit more money. ISTR there are some extra benefits if you get an annual 'Gold' Oyster - discount entry at some attractions and shows.

Also very handy if the trains go up the spout and you need to take an alternative route using the tube and/or bus (though possibly less applicable from Upper Warlingham)
 
I think a monthly oyster looks likt the one. Can you auto top these up every month like PAYG?
 
I don't know about auto top up. You can do it at most BR ticket machines in the London region these days.
