I am planning on going up to Oxford for a longish weekend soon, I've been there a few times but I don't know the city all that well. Can anybody give me advice on where is nice to photograph. I know the colleges are all really nice buildings etc. The only lens I currently have in my arsenal is the Sigma 17-70mm, would this be too limiting in a city such as Oxford? I can't imagine needing anything longer but perhaps the wide angle isn't quite enough.

I have just ordered myself a crumpler messenger boy full photo backpack, does this have any means of holding a tripod? If I wanted to get any photographs after dark then I would need to be able to take my tripod with me.

That'll be fine...loads to see and do right in the town centre...

Radcliffe Camera (if not still having work done on it), the colleges and the deer park

You can go up the tower of St Mary's church - it's on the High Street, next to Radcliffe Square. From there, you'll have great views into the Square of the Camera, Brasenose College (my alma mater!) off to the left, All Souls College to the right and the back of the Sheldonian Theatre directly opposite across the Square.

I think you may also be able to go up into the church on the corner of Carfax, where High Street intersects with Carfax - there may be some decent shots from up there too.

Otherwise, just wander round and see what you can see - the city is full of marvellous buildings and views. You can get down by the river at various points too (Christ Church meadow would be a good starting point) where I imagine there will be good scenery too.

I think it would be nice to go up the church towers to get a view. I'm not sure about the Deer Park though, my 17-70 isn't exactly a wildlife friendly lens. I am wondering if I were to go up the tower, would 17mm be enough to get good shots of the Oxford cityscape?

I will be travelling from the North by train, is there anywhere people recommend I stop off on the way or make a short trip to from Oxford by train?

Great post, thanks, if this forum had a rep system I would no doubt be upping your rep to the max. Now all I need you to do is put that on a map for me :D

I was planning on making the trip next weekend, possibly the 4th to the 7th, something like that.

I also think I will stop at York on my Journey. I am fairly sure there is plenty to photograph there too. Anyone got any suggestions on how to spend a few hours in York?

the minster
national railway museum
shambles
the city walls
lots of old churches and pubs

the centre is pretty small. If you use the park and ride at rawcliffe bar (on the ring road to the north west) the bus will take you to the railway museum, then on to the centre just down the road from the minster. A round trip costs around £2

I can't believe I didn't think of the National Railway Museum, I haven't been there in ages and I used to love going there when I was little. Will definitely call in, especially as its free admittance.

I don't suppose anyone knows how much it costs to use the left luggage at York Station do they?
