Oxford Circus 'X crossing'

looks like chaos.. Treating people like adults and letting them cross in whatever direction they want clearly hasnt worked and we should go back to making them use the underpass [/kidding]

It's great - it should slow the busses down a bit as they come through the junction too, which has to be a good thing

How can that cost £5m our OUR money?

I hope it works, it's cost enough.

Seems crazy to me to have four crowds of pedestrians all heading for the same spot, the centre of the cross :shake:

Japanese innovation? The same Japanese who thought flying your plane into a ship, killing yourself horribly, was a good idea?

Do we have a problem with history?

That comment aside, my point is valid, the Japanese have had some very odd ideas, and this crossing is something that would have been best left in Tokyo.

No, I'm not judging anyone, nor am I going to get dragged into an argument about it.

As per my edit, I'm not going to be dragged into a pointless argument about it.

Well go for it then Fabs, but it seems like you actually want an argument.

I meant no offence, but not a particularly well worded response perhaps. My point was that the Japanese have a less-than impressive track record for some of their more eccentric innovations, and this crossing seems to be the latest piece of lunacy.

Think of my what you will, I don't really care to be honest.

That's what I was trying to do!

End of.

Check out Google Maps and you will see an 'X' crossing has been in place in Auckland since the 1980's. Intersection of Queen Street and Victoria Street.

Nothing new here. An engineering triumph? (painting lines and altering light phasings.....)

dont see the problem, if the traffic is stopped for longer than it may cause issues, but crossing at that point is a nightmare with the old system

i think it's brilliant. it works in Tokyo, so why not in London ?

good work i say !

Dammit, I missed the "argument" I would have called in "JERRY SPRINGERRRR!".

On topic anyway, absolutely absurd spending of £5m.

absolutely absurd spending of £5m.

That's my big argument with it, there's so many things better to have spent it on.

£5,000,000. seems a hell of a lot of money for a bit of fancy road surfacing and a new traffic controll system. Would that kind of money not have given us a brand new hospital?.

But, who am I to say, the powers that be [think] they know better:shrug:

I'm not sure we'd have a whole new hospital for that, but I'm sure some run down hospital could have benefitted from a partial refit or a new wing.

And I'm not so sure the powers that be do know better though, it's insanity if you ask me!

A few years back I used Tokyo's Shibuya crossing several times, its called locally a 'scramble' crossing.

- it was a bit daunting at first, only as I was not used to it, but it worked well and avoided having to traverse 2 sides of the perimeter.
