Oversaturating when using 'Save for web'

Yes
I seemed to have developed a problem where when I get a shot looking right in Photoshop, when I go to 'Save for web' it looks very oversaturated.

I can't remember changing any settings, but my monitor is correctly calibrated using Monitor Calibration Wizard 1.0, the camera, PC and Photoshop are all set to Srgb.

Any ideas?
Let me know if you need any further technical info/screengrabs.

not had that problem Bachs, so im not sure?

(will do that tutorial today, thank you!)

I had exactly the same thing except that on my box it was undersaturating when I saved for web.

I got round it by changing the colour mode to Lab Colour immediately before saving for web. I think the problem is to do with colour space/modes.

So you'd expect it to occur when making a JPEG out of other image formats but oddly enough it was the reverse. For me, the problem occured when shooting in JPEG mode and then saving a JPEG. And it never occurs now that I shoot in RAW and make TIFFs, followed by JPEGs for the web.

Weird but true.

I'm sure I'll find an answer...it rings a bell

Thanks for that...it was too complicated image layout wise to post in a thread!

I'll take a look at that thanks.
I shoot RAW, edit the image then save straight to jpg using 'save for web'

I'll probably get back into my habit of RAW>printsize Tiff then websize jpg.
I don't print, but if I ever did, I would need to re-edit the RAW file (cropping/sharpening and the myriad of other adjustments I do in PS)

Bachs,

Is there an obvious point you can say this started happening ?

Have you tried choosing a default colour profile in photoshop and see if the problem goes away ? it may be the calibration thats a little off !

Actually, I made a mistake. I've just remembered that it happened when editing RAW files in PS too. But now I use RawShooter to make TIFFs first (and then take the TIFF into PS), it doesn't happen anymore.

I don't know the answer but from that reply I would assume it to be linked directly to profiles and working spaces. My workflow is process the raw file to a tiff (Rawshooter), then work on that in PS to get a finished printable photo, then reduce the size for web viewing and save for web..all my settings seem spot on.

As you have said the way above will give you identical full size images ready for sale or print as the time requires and web size that are a good reflection of the full size image.

Not that I can remember.
I've just re-calibrated the monitor again and it's spot on.
The edited image looks fine, its when you go to 'save for web'

EDIT...sorted!
It seems to be on older images I've revisited before I had all the profiles matching.

The wonders of Photoshop :)

I am glad its sorted now and this thread could well help someone else in the future.

I still don't understand why the original image looked fine if it was a profile or colour setting but who cares?

Sorry to drag this thread back up but I am getting the same oversaturated image when 'saving for web' :banghead:

Does anyone else find this?

What exactley do I need to do to prevent it?

If I remember rightly I had to match the camera and Photoshop to sRGB.
Or you could set both to AdobeRGB, as long as the two match.

Had no problems since.

Thanks Bachs.

Its all so confusing :dizzy: .........to me anyway.

To me too mate!

Not even started getting my head around printing yet :dizzy:

Me niether.............would just be happy to be able to get an image saved to web that isn't oversaturated :Ponders:

Most cameras have sRGB and Adobe RGB colour space options. The one you should use is sRGB, and you should also be using this colourspace in your editing package.

The reason being that sRGB colour space is the one recognized and used by Windoze and was primarily developed to enable uniformity of images when viewed on different monitors (using the same sRGB settings) and particularly to enable uniform Internet sharing of images.

Dunno if that helps at all? :Ponders:

Any advice appreciated CT.

Camera set to sRGB

Raw converter set to sRGB

From what I can see in CS2 under EDIT/COLOUR SETTINGS working colour space is set to sRGB.

I must be missing something somewhere :nut:

I'm no authority on this, but it sounds like it may be a RAW conversion problem. I prefer to go RAW > TIFF > jpeg and I don't get the problem.

Do you have the problem if you shoot jpegs?

Whats a jpeg :D

Seriously though yes I will try a jpeg.

Nowt wrong with jpegs, I shoot quite a lot. :D

At least it would eliminate the RAW conversion if you still get the problem.

Hmm. :Ponders:

I'll fire up Photoshop on the lappy and see if I can find anything obvious, but I don't use PS much these days... so don't hold your breath. ;)

Well CT I just saved the RAW file as a jpeg in the option 'save as' and not 'save to web'................

Put the RAW and jpeg side by side and no apparent colour shift :Ponders:

Just out of interest, try this...
Right click desktop
click on properties
in display properties window, click on settings
click on advanced
click on colour properties
ensure default monitor profile is sRGB
(I might be wrong but I think the Adobe Gamma app may change it to AdobeRGB as the default)

I don't even know if this would give you the symptoms you are experiencing but it should be set to sRGB anyway if that is your choice on everything else so no harm in checking.

Have you tried it with Colour Mangement set to 'Off'? (in PS)

I use Spyder 2 to calab my monitor if that sheds anymore light on things.

Just done RAW/save to web and no colour shift at all :dizzy:

Weird...........and they say women are complicated :whistle2:

Well all I do is 'Save As'. Stick a pic up and if it looks OK to us you've cracked it. It must be something in your 'Save For Web' settings.

Yes weird...........wonder if someone slipped something in me tea :suspect1:

Well will see how I go............I may yet be back.

Thanks for taking the time to help :thumb:

I'm not sure we did, but cool anyway. :D

I spoke to soon :hissyfit:

I can 'save as jpeg' or 'save to web'.......view the image back in CS2 and compare the image with the original which shows no change in saturation......

If I then view the image either using the windows picture viewer or download the image and view it on the web there is a definate oversaturartion in colour.

If anyone can give any more suggestions as to what I can do/change. It would be most appreciated.

In other words, your pics are only looking right in CS2 which would seem to indicate that something is set up for Adobe RGB - not sRGB?

Thats right CT.

I have been wrestling with this problem for sometime.

I will have another look and see if I am missing the obvious.

Well the obvious appears to have been that Spyder2 calibs my monitor to look a little oversaturated :Ponders:
