Overloading a monopod

Ive been contemplating getting a Manfrotto 790B monopod, to provide a bit of ad-hoc support at times when i dont have a tripod with me. the main reason i was interested in this model is that its both very light, and folds down to a short length, ideal for slipping into a rucksack or clipping to my camera bag.

my concern is that the stated max load is only 1KG, and my 40D + 17-55 comes in at around 1.4KG. It looks sturdy enough, and unlike a tripod i'm never going to leave it unsupported.

But is it just going to become too unstable with the extra weight, or will sections start collapsing on me? getting a bigger, heavier mono would then defeat the advantage of me being able to carry it easily. Am I wasting my cash?

There is also the 676B, about £5 more and 10 cm longer but half the weight (0.4kg) and can hold 4.5Kg.:thinking:

I had a play with the 676B, but it felt a bit large for what I was after.
 
Ah ok, just a question about it though, is the information right? It just seems wrong that it is lighter but still holds more.
 
there's also a Velbon Ultra stick 50 as well. even short when collapsed than the 790B??? havent seen one in the flesh though...
 
I got a 790B for its lightness and small size when not in use.It holds my D200 and 80-400, not sure of the weight, but quite a hefty combo......:thumbs:

Excellent. I work that out to be over 2KGs, so it should be fine with my gear :thumbs:
