Hello all,

My recent roll has come out with a bar at the bottom of some of my photos, like this:

I developed in D-76 for 7.5 minutes, turning and tapping every minute. Has anyone got any ideas what this could be from?

I think it's underdeveloped rather than overdeveloped, what tank did you use?

That's underdevelopment in a Patterson Super System 4 tank. 1 reel in a universal tank, with 290-300mL of developer?

It's an AP tank, brand new one. Only one roll in a 2-roll tank - was that not a good idea? 300ml of developer.

Its usually best to put 2 reels in with the top reel being empty to make sure the one with the film on doesn't ride up and miss the chemicals, some people on here use an elastic band around the center column on the tank to stop the reel riding up. Whichever is most convenient

The weight of the liquid of the developer, as you agitate, causes the reel to move up slightly. Putting a rubber band round the centre column will fix it

what he says above

if there is only one reel in it can slip up the reel and therefore be out of the developer

The old Paterson System 4 tanks came with a clip to prevent this, but nowadays evidently the Paterson and AP tanks don't come equipped with it. A shame,

Take a 35mm film tub, cut off about a quarter of an inch from the closed end and slide it on the post after you put the spiral loaded with film in the dev. tank.
This will stop the spiral sliding up the post. Don't worry about it being a bit loose, it's close enough to be the nearest diameter.

I have a C-shaped plastic ring that came with the tank, I think it's meant to do just that! Still, next time I'll put the other reel in as well. Cheers all :)

I've never noticed this to be a problem, mine stays fairly firmly in place when I agitate and takes a bit of force to slide down when I put the spiral on.

This just happened to me...

Luckily it seems it only affected the fix stage the film looks evenly developed. When I opened the tank up to pour out the fix I noticed the spiral was sitting very high in the tank. I thought I had mucked the film up but just before I chucked it I thought it looked like a partial clip test so I stuck it back in the fix and made sure it was covered for the full 5 minutes. Looks ok now. Phew.
