For my first new lens i was thinking of getting a Sigma 28-300mm DG Macro Lens for my Sony A200. (It will be the only different lens i have apart from the stock 18-70mm)

I have began to prefer taking in macro but my current lens will not allow me to see intricate details, I would like to excel in macro photography.

I also want to be able to capture images from distance, so i though this lens would be ideal, Opinions?

It comes at a cost of £249.99.

I am also considering buying a Sony HVL-F42 Flashgun. Any opinions?

Are there macro tubes that fit Sony A200's?

Help Me Please!

Have a look at the Sigma 70-300mm APO Macro. Takes macros at up to 1:2 and is pretty sharp. Costs quite a bit less than the 28-300mm too.

Technically 1:2 isn't macro, for that you need a proper macro lens, such as the 105mm f/2.8

Thanks' Joe,

I took a look at that lens and i have changed my mind :)

Thankyou.

No, technically 1:2 isn't macro but it's pretty close and is as good as your going to get (without extension tubes, close-up filters etc.) for a zoom lens with 300mm maximum reach.

But, yeah like Flash in the Pan said, 1:2 isn't true macro and if that's what you were looking for then maybe it's worth investing in a proper macro lens like the Sigma 150mm f/2.8 (which is very good apparently).
You'll get better macro shots than with the 70-300mm but not as good far-off shots.

I'm thinking of maybe getting a Sigma 70-300mm to use along side my 180mm macro and 300mm f/2.8 purely because it means I won't have to change lenses as much.

Anway, I'm glad I could be of some help :-)

jimidibob...if your serious about macro photography, then it's worth investing in a macro dedicated lens.what focal length you need will depend on what you want to shoot,ie:still life, insects and bugs etc....

a good compromise is the sigma 105 macro lens, light enough to hand hold, and gives enough distance to shoot insects, which can be easily spooked if you get to close.it also makes an excellent portrait lens.

If looking at the secondhand market take a look at the minolta 100mm f2.8 too. I looked at the tamron, sigma and minolta and ended up liking the minolta the most at about the same price for a clean secondhand copy. I usually favour sigma lenses, just something about the EX build I like, but in this case prefered the minolta sharpness.

Cheers you guys,

Much appreciated! :)
