Thanks Ingrid, fortunately I have a number of apple trees and some fence posts to experiment with.
My original desire was to fed the fox as I know there is a pair and they had cubs last year, I thought I heard noises of young cubs a couple of days ago. I'm going to need to be more careful about where I put the food if the badger is a regular visitor ... more careful about where I put my step too with the damage he's doing!

We did well buying them when we did, last time I looked they were out of stock. No badgers here so far (apart from me!) but I've had some good recordings of our local hedgehog checking out the nest box in my garden, as the following screen shot shows:



Plus this mighty hunter carrying its prey!



Perhaps we ought to start a separate 'Lockdown Garden Safari' thread to post pics and video clips of wildlife recorded in our gardens?

I surmise that 'open carry' is permitted in their State Law...........................................but semi-automatic and assault weapons on the city streets!!! Or do they think they can shoot a virus?

That was my first comical thought looking at these clowns. They clearly don't get that right now, their little cluster f'k of stupidity is more dangerous than anything in their hands - As they say, guns don't kill people ...

Really, they are even allowed to openly carry 'long guns' in built up areas and/or city limits??? Talk about the 'wild west' ~ who would have thought in the 21stC that that would still be considered appropriate!

Looks like 3 week extension to self-isolation and serious thought being given to sticking to the original 12 weeks, not that ime affected because I fall in the shielding section which they are saying could be in to next year.

I will stay at home during the lockdown but after depending on the relaxing of it that my car will come out and i will go for regular local drives avoiding people.
 
Until an effective vaccine is developed, once the predicted infection peak subsides and the NHS can cope with 'normal' rates of attrition, I suppose we'll get back to something approaching normal. However, unless the virus is a 'one trick pony' and goes the way of SARS then I suspect it will probably exist amongst us, picking people off seemingly at random, in a similar way to that which the Polio virus seemed to infect only a certain percentage of people for no obvious reason while others were unaffected.

Just read a suggestion that areas like i live in could have the lockdown eased before others because of our low infection numbers, sorry to be selfish but if the others are not ready to have theirs lifted then i hope they will not be flooding into Cleethorpes bring more cases with them.

I think that would be very difficult to do without creating real problems, can't see it happening that way.
 
A used camera body bought from Wex has just arrived. Considering the current situation would people here take steps to clean the camera before use and if so how would they do it?

Asking for a friend.....honest:LOL: but seriously though.

I posted a link on this forum, some time ago, to a research paper about how long they found the covid-19 virus remained active on different surfaces, which I can't find any more :-(

They found it was still active after 72 hours on stainless steel, but at very low levels. With surfaces like cardboard and paper, it was about 24 hours. The smoother and shinier the surface, the longer the virus remains active, it's related to how different surfaces retain heat. But as with all these things there will always be an amount of uncertainty about the numbers.

What I did when I recently got a second hand lens, was to store the package for two days, washing my hands after I put the package it into its two days quarantine.

I then opened the package and disposed of the packaging, placing the lens into quarantine for a further 4 days (assuming it was now at least two days since anyone had handled it) and then washed my hands.

After 4 days, I handled the lens normally.

Cleaning it as well would be useful, but I reckoned that it would be difficult to properly clean it, and went the "wait until the virus was deactivated" route, but as some viruses can remain active for far longer periods than the tests for covid-19 suggested, and that was only one piece of research, there is always a risk attached to this approach. But then again there is also a risk to missing part of the camera while cleaning.

Olympus published some advice on cleaning cameras in relation to covid-19 that you might find useful.

Anti-bacterial is not effective on the virus, neither is disinfectant etc.
70% min alcohol based sanitiser, soapy water or bleach are claimed to be effective.
I wash or wipe everything in soapy water and leave for 2/3 minutes ... outer box/wrapping then inner box/wrapping then the item itself.
Obviously you can't really soap wash a camera unless you are very careful but you should be able to thoroughly wipe with effective hand sanitiser.

As they say alcohol is best so all you needed was 2 bottles of whiskey, a bottle of Malt & a bottle of blend.

Wipe over with the blend and drink the malt. If the blend doesn't kill the virus the malt means you wouldn't care!

You'll be needing the Heart of the Run for the car - 68% or so. By the time it gets to the bottle it won't be strong enough to kill the wee beastie!

I believe it has to be at least 70% strength alcohol to destroy the virus, so whisky at 40% won't do the job. As it's not going to be any use, you'd better send any unopened bottles of single malt to me for safe disposal. (y)

Just use 2 bottles 40% + 40% and you're safe. Sorry can't send the unopened bottles, posting a pacel isn't an esential journey. :LOL:

Tell that to the several people being made to queue outside our local shop to use the post office on Monday afternoon, each holding a parcel. I wondered if each one of those was an essential journey?
 
Just been on the news that police have confirmed that travelling to a remote area for exercise is ok but journey time should not exceed exercise lime. That goes a bit beyond the 5 mins or so previously suggested.

It's also been said that flytipping has increased since they shut the waste disposal compounds. What did they expect to happen?

Hardly 'just'. The NPCC announced those guidelines last week.

But the NPCC guidance isn't public health advice, its advice to police officers to help them interpret what might be considered "legally" as a "reasonable excuse" for being away from home. This bit on travelling to remote areas is an "interpretation" of the Regulations made by the CPS/NPCC, and isn't one of the examples of "reasonable excuses" included in the Regulations. Which isn't an exhaustive list so the CPS/NPCC using their legal expertise to "invent" additional possible reasonable excuses not included in the Regulations isn't as odd is it may seem.

The contents of the Regulations will be constrained by what is considered legally acceptable (ie human rights etc), and obviously do not fully represent best practise to minimise spreading the virus. Best practise is still to follow the Government guidance on social distancing (based on scientific advice rather than legal advice), which obviously goes beyond the measures that can be legally enforced.

As far as I can make out (but I'm not a lawyer), there are no obvious conflicts between the requirements of the Regulations and following the Government guidance on social distancing.

Having said all that the Government advice, beyond the general principles of keeping 2m apart, staying local, keeping to essential travel only, and exercising for around an hour a day, is less than clear and could do with a bit of an overhaul. Especially in terms of clarifying how their advice interacts with the Regulations and to make it more obvious what parts are "Guidance" and what parts are a legal requirement.

Well it was on tonight's news and the first time I've heard it.

As for NPCC guidance not being public health advice, I am keeping more the 2 mtrs away from others in an area well within 10 mins travel from home. I'm safer there than exercising locally and I believe that is a reasonable excuse for my short travel and considering I have self isolated a lot more than most and for longer than most I think that the occasional travel is well within the government guidance.
