Outstanding lightning shot

No argument from me. It shouldn't mean we can't discuss what we like or don't like though.. and why we think what we think.

When someone like NG slaps their name on something, then it will be widely discussed and criticised.

OK - That's enough.

I posted as I was on my way out the door and I naively hoped that we'd see a bit of common sense reign in here.

We're not a film forum or a TV forum or an art forum . . . we're a photography forum and this isn't about censorship or banning opinions but about showing a bit of respect and empathy for fellow photographers.

Anyone who has been here a while knows that we relax the rule about unsolicited critique when it comes to photos in the public domain and let a lot of opinion and discussion stand. However, there is a line there - and if I need to spell it out, saying that "it's crap" crosses that line and some of the other posts were coming close.
Where that line is isn't black and white, which is why I'd hoped that we'd see a little bit of common sense and discretion in here. Some members have obviously grasped that better than others.

Incidentally, arguing about moderating decisions on the open forum is also against the rules so time to get back on track here ;)
TP is actually one of the least censored forums that I've come across and if anyone wants to discuss the forum stance on unsolicited critique that's what Forum Discussion is for.

And David, I think you need to take a little time out to adjust your posting attitude to other members.

Suspended for what? Is this what this forum is about? It's certainly not one of the least censored forums I've been on. Probably one of the worst.

I've no desire to be part of a forum where the moderators don't even acknowledge photography as an art form.

Feel free to make my ban permanent.

So long.. thanks for all the fish.

Pookeyhead

What you're suggesting is it would also be poor form to criticise a movie we've seen because the director isn't here to defend himself, or make comment on a TV programme we saw... or a painting hung in the V&A.

Where do you draw the line?

<Cough> I was referring to the distinctions that you laid out in an earlier post but I think you already know that.
Perhaps your penchant for deliberately misinterpreting posts and childish bickering has something to do with the reason that you've had so many problems on the forum and why your name crops up repeatedly on RTMs.

Please mind the door on your way out and don't forget to pick your dummy back up.

As a matter of principle we don't discuss moderating discussions about other members either on the open forum or with anyone who asks privately.
However, if you choose to think that David has been given some time out lightly for no good reason, I have plenty of tinfoil left in the storeroom and you're welcome to join the conspiracy club.

Disagree.

This is one of the forums with the most common sense and reasonable mods etc. you have to be a complete tool to get a ban and looking through this thread it would appear that's exactly what has occurred.

Don't agree either. It is very heavily moderated and very censored compared to other forums I use. However, I accept that is what it is and it is a good forum.

If I want to say exactly what I want to say I just do so on other forums...

Fully Agree!

Shame another thread has gone "down the pan" and the mods have, yet again, got to play at headmaster/mistress............THAT is "crap"!!

And to give further evidence of how much of a tool you have to be to get a ban just look at big soft moose. Here's still here! :D

That's your prerogative but saying "whatever" to Sarah's thorough explanation of why is really quite childish. Wouldn't you agree?

Yes Joe indeed it was.
The "trouble" is that the members really do not see a fraction of what goes on.
You may think that someone has been suspended, for a trite / off the cuff
remark, but this is not the case.
There would have been a lot more, going on behind the scenes,
RTM's PM's to mods and much much more.
We don't ban people for fun, although it may seem like it to the uninitiated.

Now how about we quit questioning the site staff decisions, being childish to other mods, and other members
and just get out there and have fun? Eh?

Its far too cliquey on here. There are people who police these forums just so they can try to be moderators. They all want the power on a forum to dish out what they can. It's a shame they can't be helpful and always have to talk down to people who are new to these forums.

Tbh I can't say I've noticed people trying to police the forum with a view of becoming a mod.
Many try (like myself) to put a word or two in to try and ease tension that is building and to try help folk see a more open picture but be assured I don't wanna be a mod....i wudn't be strong enough to lift up the ban hammer anyway:D

As for cliquey.....depends on your interpretaion....occasionally there may be a thread that apperas a little that way but "cliquey" to me is feeling somewhat un invited or pushed out and that is something i've never experienced on TP.

Nobody forces any of us to be on here nor to join in with anything so if we don't like, then we all know how to exit!

Seriously Derek, if you are riding this horse for Pookeyhead, you are barking up the wrong tree ( how's that for a great set of mixed metaphors!)

Apart from the fact that he really isn't everything that he makes himself out to be, this isn't the first time that he's disappeared from a forum in a puff of smoke. I won't name the others, because I've got into trouble for doing so before, but the trail really isn't hard to follow.

I'm not riding this for anyone as you so eloquently put it. I get the picture though. Ill stop posting on here. I can see everyone's views so ill just stop contributing to this thread. I can't be done with everyone jumping down my throat for having an opinion in my view of this site.

The drama of it all

Beats coronation street though dunnit?? :D

Time for the thread to get back on track me thinks otherwise i can see a large pink Boa (whoops edit that : Cobra!!) coming along and consticting it (or us!! :gag:) :D :D

Right, so where were we up to? Ah yes: I'm right, everyone who disagrees with me is wrong. That's where we'd got to I think. :p

I'm watching you :bat:

Yeah lets all go around again shall we?
I've got nothing planned for the rest of the evening :p

Well, that was dramatic, wasn't it?

Back to the picture.

IMHO, I've seen better posted on this forum by forum members.

We could change ends.

OK, here we go:

I think that was a really, really crap photo...

I doubt anyone is really who they make out to be...
And, I find it ironic, that a member was suspended, for making comments on another's work while that person wasn't here to defend themselves(or their work), and here you are, making comments about him, and he is unable to defend himself, does seem like double standards to me.....
Whilst David might be forthright in his views at times, and doesn't perhaps back down as much as some would hope...I have also noticed how helpful and constructive he is on a great deal of other threads, and is always willing to offer advice especially to new members...
Some of us look at the bigger picture...

OMG i found the first time around exhausting....I'm just becoming too old for this ( no sarky comments thank you!!:D :D )

Some of us look at the bigger picture...
And that's exactly what we the staff do,
sometimes the whole, bigger, bigger picture, is not available on the open forum.
So, whether you think that sometimes, we are either too hard, or too soft,
I can assure you, all the "options" are carefully considered.

We know that we cannot please all the people all the time, but C'est la vie.

Just so long as you please half the people half of the time your probably doing it right.

Im sure pooky was an old friend of mine, kinda reminded me of someone as he warmed up...you know who I might mean too. ;)
personally I hope hes back soon. ..in a calm way.

I rather hope that he's a fantasist and not actually a university lecturer.

But by registering a second account he has got a perma ban so how can he be back soon?

Jon

The very best lecturers I had made pooky look like a shy, reserved, retiring sort.

They upset a lot of people but I loved the challenge of coming back at them.

I accept this forum might not be the place for that kind of approach, which is why I'd like him to mellow his approach a bit.

But I would like to see him back.

That's a fair comment....
However...
Pookeyhead/David had also given up a considerable amount of his time to help me with my photography skills(or lack of).... he offered both constructive advice and criticism, and he has been incredibly patient in answering my constant questions due to my lack of even basic knowledge, even though he was often busy himself.
I sure learnt a lot from him in a short space of time...
I would like to see him return....

But that's what trolls do. They make themselves useful in some places in order to gain favour. Then arse around elsewhere and hope that they can stick at it or longer. It's typical trolism.

That's a load of tosh sorry.....

I agree - a good lecturer ought to be challenging. But a good teacher at any level will also exude a thorough command their subject, demonstrate a high level of critical thinking, eschew sloppy argument - and certainly not flounce off in a puerile hissy fit when challenged.

well, he's not here anymore, so probably not worth wasting too much time on debating it :) Plenty of threads out there in need of critique :)

Dont be sorry. You are entitled to your opinion. One that I disagree with and the evidence here backs up what I said but you are still entitled to think differently.
