Focus by torchlight,, then turn the torch off.

Your flash can only illuminate according to its power output - if there is no ambient light (in the dark there is none to speak of) then shutter speed has NO INFLUENCE WHATEVER - provided it is at synch speed or slower. The control is all via the aperture and flash power.

Simple as that.

Simple as that.

Very unlikely to find somewhere with NO ambient light in this country. Far too much light pollution so shutter speed does still play a part.

I agree with the torch to focus though.
 
Dal - you are obviously from somewhere near the Big Smoke.....up here we have near blackness at night unless you are in town. On a full moon you can see well enough - but a shutter speed of 125 and f8 on 100 would not register anything to speak of.
