Hi guys,

ive been approached by a local girl who would like some underwear/topless shots of her outside.

i will also look for more advice in a different section, but in here im looking for advice regarding lighting..

do you thnik i will need some flashes triggered on stands... if so how much and where... (cheap as poss, im on the bones of my arse at the moment).

Cheers.

if its sunny you can always consider reflectors and shot into the light

As Above..

Try and stick with Natural light if possible...
They will look more natural...

If you have fairly decent ambient light then you could easily get away with a single flash and a reflector. If you are skint and don't have the right kit then how about looking for another local photographer to help you out with the shoot and you can share eachothers kit. I'm assuming as you don't have the right lighting you won't have done this thing before so another benefit of getting another tog in is that you can bounce ideas off eachother. Using off camera flash for the first time isn't easy so best to give it a try before doing the shoot with the model.

small softbox speedlight decent brakcet decent stand can work but balls to learning when shooting glamour, I still don't have it down perfectly and I got my rig well over a year ago, and use it a LOT

whats the best 'budget' stuff i can get... say for £120 could i get 2 stands, lights triggers etc..

Hate to say it, but if you can't afford the equipment and don't have the experience, it might be worth passing it on to another photographer? That way you might get people passing stuff back to you and you can focus on the areas of photography that you're best at and people will see your best work?

Personally I'd be crossing my fingers for a nice evening weather wise and shoot with natural light and perhaps a reflector.

This is coming from someone who spent £600 on a flash and triggers two days before a shoot that paid £100 having never used them before. I'd read up on it, so it went well, but it's not really what I would recommend. :)

Edit: £120 is pretty tight. You could get the stand, light modifier and ebay triggers/sync cord for that, but I guess you'd be looking at second hand flash.

i got one of those flashes from FITP the other week..

i might get another im sure i could get triggers and stands for the rest of the money..

im not getting paid much more than you ian for this... its just basically a local lass wanting to try and get some shots for herself...

if you want me to be honest, you should walk away as you will **** it up, upset her and as such all her friends unless you have a shocking amount of luck which could lose you future work

I intend to have a go at model portfolio stuff this summer but have been doing a LOT of the sort of shots I want to be getting, know my kit inside out and have fall back plans

I think that's a bit harsh David. Have a look HERE to see the results from a shoot I arranged last week. Admittedly it was a TFP shoot so no money exchanged hands so there was no real risk but most of the photographers there had never done this kind of outdoor portrait shooting before and personally I think most of the results would look good in a new model's portfolio.

Obviously Andi has to be cautious but I don't think he should walk away just because he's never done it before.

Andi, if you get the chance to practice on a TFP model or 2 before the paid shoot then I'd advice you do it.

Is she modelling for herself or to try and make a career out of it? If she is modelling for herself, then ultimately she knows what she wants photo wise. However, if she is wants a portfolio shoot to build up a career going topless she needs to reconsider going topless, and you could advise her so. Women think that by going down the Nuts/Zoo route, they are destined for a long career making a fortune - they don't because there is a HUGE number of women who think the same so there is an abundance of women willing to get their kit off for those types of mags. She will have a longer, more fruitful career if she keeps her clothes ON, or at least doesn't go topless.

I'm no prude by the way - my portfolio site is here - I just believe that there is more to being a photographer than taking photos - and giving good advice to potential models is crucial.

I'm just worried at him trying to build a firm and shooting himself in the foot by getting a ****** reputation early on

also I don't know where Andi's work falls, they might look 'good' in a portfolio but I would be ****ed if I paid for them as they are very entry level tfp

to be honest she approached me and asked what i could do for this amount.. i have explained i have not dont these kind of shoots and advised i can do this shoot if she wants me to... if not i could point her in the right direction,.. as it turns out she lives within a mile radius of me and likes my other work.

she doesnt want page3 kind of get ya chebs out look.. she wants more arty kind of shoot from what i have been told...

i asked her if she has examples of what she is looking for and she wasnt sure.

to be honest i think its a case of some of her mates are probs getting it done and she wants some done too but not as 'cheap (degrading) as those.

at this stage we have agreed date and she is going to drop me a retainer fee on thursday.

she originally wanted them done on the beach but she was nervous about there being to many people.. she is going to look locations and also the kind of shots she needs in the mean time leading upto ourshoot in two weeks.

Right mate - then what you need to do is make your own stamp on it by YOU developing the photo shoot for her - your idea, your location etc. Straight away, by doing that, you are developing your own style - earning while learning so to speak.

I didn't mean to put you down or anything Andi, just think you could mess up the 15 jobs down the line for the sake of £150 now

you need to start somewhere mate..

i know that i could mess it up.. but thats the same with anything... i did my first wedding on saturday.... never shadowed/second togged and i got rave reviews and possible future bookings from the proffesional attitude i had and thet i had a laugh with the guests and made them at ease.

I am happy with the photographs i took that day. and im sure the B&G will be too..

im willing gamble myself on this one. i know i can do a good job. she knows my experience at this level and she has also never done this before. im charging her half the amount i would for what she is wanting to compensate for this.

seems fair, everyone has an approach and that aint mine but if it works for you. I like to practice to make myself calm so I can think subject not light/tech on the day.

If you need lights and cant afford them, cant you rent them for this shoot ?

i know someone with the gear that i will need (daz on here ) im sure we could negotiate.. but still all depends on location and weather.

You can get good results in evening light with the sun and an on-camera flash used for fill (I set mine to -2/3 ec in this situations).

As the light gets lower and you are relying on flash for the main light as a minimum I have one flash off camera shooting into a brolly or through a softbox + one on camera to trigger the other + provide fill (probably - 1.5 stops under main exposure for fill flash).

mate i would just do it!

philosophy for live is to just give it a go! so what if you mess up or dont get it spot on first go. You can always offer her a 2nd run for no fee if you have a bit of guilt about the quality?

I would certainly do it off the cuff just like yourself haha

Good luck :P

Isn't there a studio near you that you could hire for an hour or two. They'd have all the lighting you'd need and a plain dropback/background. And as it would just be you and her maybe she wouldn't be soo nervous so you wont have to rush your shots... Best of luck.

hi, i originally offered her a shoot in a studio, but she wanted to have it outside.. her call really.

Don't worry about the weather mate - the harder you have to work for your photos the better they will be. Whats more original: model on beach in the sun or model on beach in the glorious north east rain?

The thing is, your taking photos outside, which let's face it is the worlds BEST studio. You'll find it harder to take photos in a studio that what you will outside, because even though you have full control of the light, knowing HOW to control that light takes YEARS of experience. You have all the time in the world to take her photos. You did your first Wedding at the Weekend - now THAT'S stressful. Portfolio and portrait photography isn't so just enjoy!
