Hi all
my wife needs help, she`s been asked to take some photos at a friends party at the weekend and they would like photos outside in front of the pier

we went down tonight to have a play but couldn't get any decent shots.
they were either too bright or too dark and we couldn't get a shutter speed any faster than 1/16th

we had the flash set to ettl and the lens set to 2.8

what are we doing wrong because this is driving me mad :-(

There are 2 issues here, Mark kinda mentioned them both. but firstly, when using flash as the primary light source, you need to shoot manual, in the auto modes the camera assumes that youre adding flash as fill, so has dropped the shutter speed to ridiculous levels.

Raise the ISO, and go for as large an aperture you can and as long an exposure as you can comfortably handhold. Preferably to get some of the background detail to show.

Then comes the flash, using ETTL, you can then light your subject, but be aware that like all auto settings it's assuming a grey subject, so you'll maybe need a touch of + flash exposure compensation here.

Then comes the photography, to light it nicely, I'd get the flash off camera and use some sort of diffuser. Maybe keep it simple with a shoot through brolly.

What set up are you using / used?

Me or the OP? Confused because you quoted me.

I use a mix of Canon and Yongnuo flash guns and YN622 triggers, I previously had PW flex triggers but was getting sick of misfires due to interference, the YN stuff is better built than the price would suggest.

And a small selection of softboxes, reflectors and brollies. This years project is battery powered studio head and large octabox.
