Hi - looking at attending an event at Oulton park - can anyone advise how good the vantage points are around the track for taking pictures - are there high barriers/gates? can you get close to the track? wheres the best place to be?

One of the best tracks for photography! Anywhere pretty much is good but my personal favourites are the last corner before the main start/finish straight and Knickerbrook. Been several times but hired a 100-400 Canon lens last time which was top. Follow my link at the bottom and have a look Under Oulton Park Gold Cup 2008. All of these were taken with the 100-400mm.

thanks - i'll definately take a look at your pics, and will definately book on to go there :-)

I've only got an IS 55-250mm lens (new hobby) - will that be OK to take some decent shots, even if I have to crop into them???

ooo sorry one other thing - when you go in are you free to just roam around the perimeter of the track? indeed is that where all the spectators stand (i.e. theres no grandstand or seating area is there that i might get pulled/distracted to?)

Oulton Park is awesome for photography there are loads of locations. look here for some tips.

I managed to get some decent shots with a bridge camera with 10x optical zoom so your lens will be plenty long enough.

My favourite place is at Lodge. Cross over and go along the fence util you come to a few tress. Walk arond the tress then go in behind them. You can the Oulton Park shot from there, which is awesome.

My second favourite is the inside of Cascades which means you will have to walk from lodge all the way down to cascades. Takes about 5 minutes. Get some great panning shots from there. Also get cars on three wheels if you are lucky!!

Look through all my threads and photobucket. If you see any pictures you like, post them here and I will give you details as to the location ;)

No seating or grandstands. You just walk around the perimeter. Only a few places your not allowed. Outside of Druids. Inside of Druids if there is a rally day or something on. Your allowed pretty much everywhere, though.

That lens will be fine at Oulton Park. There's not much in the way of big debris fences or barriers. If you go on Saturday, they're using the short (Foster's) Circuit I think, so Hilltop and the Britten's Chicane won't be used.

Best places to shoot are:

  1. Inside of Lodge corner
  2. Outside of Lodge corner, through Deer Leap and all along the start/finish straight
  3. All along The Avenue, down to Denton's and the entry to Cascades
  4. Then, on the other side, Knickerbrook
  5. Clay Hill
  6. And finally, in the centre of the circuit, all along The Avenue, the outside of Cascades, and Druid's are all excellent spots

So pretty much everywhere! It's a wonderful circuit, very scenic and with loads of vantage points. Because of the parkland setting you can get some nice backgrounds too. Check my Flickr pages (link in my signature), there's loads of stuff from Oulton Park in there.

THere using Island on Saturday. Not the full circuit so Foulstons is out of the equation but no the short on so hilltop is still avaliable :)

Oh ok. Have to get to the hairpin for the Legends races then, it's usually carnage down there :)

Lodge is my favourite at Oulton and it is nice to be able to cross over there as well and you are also not far from the pits for a beer when you fancy.
