Updated my mac 5 days ago and already had 3 major system crashes in Windows 98 style (something like it freezes, goes to white screen of death and reboots, or fails to wake up from sleep and reboots)

Anyone else suffer from this?

I have phoned apple, but they seem to suggest maybe it is just a one off. I also reported it to their bugzilla, but would want to find out if there is anything in particular that could be done.

Next time I shall not upgrade anything until it is more mature and hopefully at x.0.2 or x.0.1
 
I had that with lion initially. Might have been something silly like choice of screen saver, blanking time and sleep time. Happened a couple of times then it just stopped. Flash is another likely crash causer.

There should be logs somewhere saying what happened. That might give you a clue as to which app or system driver is wonked.
 
There is an 18 page post about this in the Apple support forums. Apparently anyone upgrading to 10.9 may run into issues where the machine freezes. Read an article about it on the Verge. Some people are downgrading back to the previous OS version and the issues disappear so it looks like a software issue. Patch probably being frantically prepared as we 'speak'.
 
Eek. Glad I didn't upgrade! Releasing freezing software is a poor show. Clearly not tested it thoroughly enough.
 
Do you have a backup you can use to restore your data from? Time Machine doesn't readily allow downgrading the OS.
 
No issues on my mac also, apart from a message saying the download failed at 99%, clicking on the app store link took me straight to the installer though so all was OK. The only program that wouldn't work was XBMC.

I think the issue lies with upgrading. When I updated it carried over loads of tweaked system files and I think some of them were responsible for massive CPU loads I was experiencing when Finder simply tried to render an app icon, or how my WiFi connection would just die on me.

Since then I've done a clean install and it's working flawlessly. Mavericks is a brilliant OS.
 
Been running it since day 1....well day 2 actually.....had to wait for all the yanks to finish downloading it first.

Been working fine. No problems at all.
 
So far so good for me. I updated rather than a clean install which I was a little wary of but not had any noticeably negative issues.

A big plus for me is that the machine seems to come straight out of sleep mode whereas on Mountain Lion it used to take a few attempts to wake it up.
 
I have one issue (I mentioned in another thread), in that the indexing seems all to pot on occasion, for example, I have a folder full of tiff's (2,600-83GB) on a SSD drive, that I frequently go to, if they are sorted by 'name' or 'none' then the images show instantly & I can scroll through them. But if I want to sort by 'date added' (which I frequently do), then it takes around 30 seconds for the sort to sort itself out, whereas previously (pre-Mavericks) it would sort instantly.

This issue has a fair bit of coverage on various Apple forums, some suggest the spotlight indexing is to blame?
 
It looks like Google Chrome is in the crash dump... interesting. I was clicking on it when it all fell last time

I disable image folder indexing, it helps to speed up everything. You know where to find your images anyway.
 
Glad I haven't experienced the same issues on my IMac or MB Air. Presently running OK
 
All running OK on my 2007 MBP - it's performing the best it has ever done. I did a clean install so don't know if that helps rather than an upgrade?
 
I did an upgrade via the App store, rather than a clean install i would normally do.

This is the best Apple OS i've used since Tiger IMO. No problems, super quick for me. Just working fine, multiple display enhancements are super useful as well.
 
It's working great for me on both my machines. The only thing of note is that the new Wordpress install doesn't play well with the new Safari, but that's hardly a problem.
 
Installed on day one on all our machines and no such issues. Just ccleaner had to be reinstalled when it was updated a few days later.
 
2008 Macbook Pro, 2009 iMac, 2012 Retina Macbook Pro all updated no problems. Even updated all the iWork apps (Free) all OK.

Onyx doesn't run ( cache cleaner) but then it is OS specific. They are writing a new one for Mavericks.

i1 software needs an update but that's detected and advised to download.

The only change / niggle I have since updating via the App Store to mavericks is with Lightroom 4

All my sliders in the develop module have turned white now instead of their previous colourings for their purpose I.e the white balance slider no longer shows blue at one end and red at the other.

Mine have done the same Brian and I'm using Lightroom 3.
 
Just had 2 crashes more today AND I am pretty sure this is display related. If display is off after sleep, it will not recognise it after wake and just crash. This is definitely the case connecting via TB. Reported to apple bugs

I wish I could get 10.8 back.

I must disagree, and I base this on personal experience.

When ah were a lad, I had an iMac with OS X 10.something.something on it. The upgrade to 10.something.something+1 caused a problem, something to do with a dodgy wifi driver (supplied by Apple) that would basically mean no networking for YUO! Sadface, etc.

So what I did was boot off my CD, choose the relevant options to select my TM backup one OS X revision back, and go away for a long time (it's not a quick process).

Came back, all done, I was now at OS X 10.something.6, whereas before I was 10.something.7, and my wifi worked again.

ETA: Note, you will end up wiping your disk to carry out the downgrade from the backup, so this is only for those who are confident that their TM backups are (a) reliable and (b) up-to-date.

that wouldnt surprise me, our TB displays have been buggy/unreliable at the best of times.

i would probably expect a TB firmware update some time soon if it is indeed another TB display fault.
 
Bought a new 27" i7 iMac in May this year, used Migration to migrate everything from my old iMac, then upgraded to Mavericks the second day after the release and never had one problem (touching wood), think it is great.
 
I just tried to do the same with old MBP connected to DVI monitor. All worked well in this case. The two systems share pretty much the same setup so clearly this is something about 'mini' or thunderbolt display connection.

Great that it worked for you. In my case I wanted to go backward from 10.6 snow leper to 10.5 leopard, and it didn't matter what I did, because I couldn't find a way to force it to recover the information. Messages appeared along the lines of "this backup was made with a later version of OSX and cannot be used" or similar. The only recovery option was to use a backup copy 1 month old.

So IMO it's ALWAYS worth making 2 backup copies, just in case Apple have decided that reversion is not to be an option, but if you feel comfy taking the risk then that's fine.
 
No problems here on my MB Air. Continuing to function faultlessly unlike any of the creaky old Windoze machines that are lying around constantly trying to update themselves on shutdown! :D

Not really sure why that failed. You'd boot off the 10.6 CD, run up the wossnames to choose the TM backup for 10.5, and off you go.
 
Perfect for me, not a single problem or crash, perhaps you have some other software installed which isn't compatible with 10.9 yet?

I think you get an alert telling you if that's the case, or at least I did with one thing I had installed - had to look for an alternative :)
 
I have been running this just over a week and i upgraded from snow leopard as i had java issues so far the only minor problem i have seen was time machine. my sinology has drive wouldn't log in and i had to upgrade its firmware but all ok after that

Ahh.... classic...

If you really, truly want to believe that OSX and Apple are perfect then you are totally entitled to do so, but to broadcast that view on a public forum will just make you look very silly to those who have more than the minimum experience with computers.... ;)

Nope, I don't believe OSX and Apple are perfect in every way, simply pointing out my own experiences with the products I use. ;)
