I've been given some Ostrich Meat, anyone got any recipes, preferably without peppers ?

I prefer them with peppers...

Sorry :D

I've only had it once.
It was pan fried with just salt and pepper and served with garlic mushrooms and new potatoes.
It was delicious though...and very tender.

That would be nothing then, don't like steak either :(

I don't either.
But although it's a rather dark meat, I didn't find it's taste to be like beef at all.

Of course it doesn't, it's a big bird, not a massive mammal.

Doesn't what ?

I don't cook beef steak so don't serve anything with it but that wasn't the question, l do actually know how to cook veg etc.,
never bought or cooked ostrich so no idea of the best way to cook it
Never mind l'll carry on searching google :)

So l've been told more like lamb apparently :)

Your question was about recipes not cooking methods?
Never mind...
Personally I'd use the griddle pan and cook it rare, but that's a 'personal taste' issue. Unlike poultry you should be fine eating it rare (think game, not poultry)

Seasonally we're eating a lot of Cavalo Nero which would stand up well, maybe a mushroom sauce and new potatoes?

Agreed. Still cook it and use recipes like it is steak which I presume one can still look at even when one doesn't eat it @Gremlin

Just about any recipe/cooking method that works with steak is fine for ostrich. Taste is quite similar too. You'll probably enjoy it if you like steak, and you probably won't if you're not fond of it.

I tend to use it in a slow cooker with a variety of other game food (pigeon, venison, rabbit, duck, etc.) and have a nice stew or casserole when I get home from a long walk.

I thought all good Ostrich recipes started with ..
First bury the head in the sand ....

:D

Is that your or the ostrich?

Quite happy to oblige if it's yours :p

Nothing yet, it's in the freezer till I find something to do with it (y)

Cube it and cook it very quickly for a short period of time - crisp the outside and leave the inside "pink" - if you even slightly over cook it it becomes like rubber .... use a hotplate, plancha or Tepanyaki type stone

or treat it like a fillet steak - again short cooking time on high heat

never over cook Ostrich

decide which sauce you prefer - pepper, pepper mushroom or even a mustard one

I eat and have eaten it quite a lot, from ostrich sausages through to ostrich Tepanyaki
