Oscar Pistorius 'shoots girlfriend'

Pistorius's statement

Briefly, in a statement to the court, Oscar Pistorius has set out his version of events on the night Reeva Steenkamp died.

He said they went to bed and fell asleep.

He woke to close a sliding door and get a fan and went out on to the balcony, he said.

At that point he heard a noise in the bathroom and felt a "sense of terror" rush through him.

He was scared and didn't switch on the light, he said.

He was acutely aware of violent crime and had received death threats in the past, and had been a victim of crime in the past, he said. For that reason he kept a 9mm pistol under the bed.

He said he got his gun and moved towards the bathroom, and screamed at the "intruder" to get out of the house and for Steenkamp to call the police. He thought she was still in bed.

He did not have his prosthetic legs on, and said he felt vulnerable for both himself and Steenkamp. For that reason, he said, he fired through the bathroom door.

He then saw that Steenkamp was not in bed, he said. That was when he realised she could have been in the bathroom, he said. The bathroom door was locked.

He said he went to the balcony and called for help, and then put his legs on.

He said he opened the toilet door by smashing it with a cricket bat. Steenkamp was alive inside, slumped over, he said. He took her to the bathroom, called paramedics and tried to carry her downstairs to get help, he said.

He tried to revive her but she died in his arms, he said.

and this behaviour was also witnessed by 3 witnesses who can confirm everything, their names are Ms T Fairy, Mr S Clause, and Mr E Bunny.

The tooth fairy was in the getaway car. :| its true honest.

Obviously I am going by media reports but suggestions are that they were the only 2 people in the house, the police are "surprised" by the " i thought it was a burglar" response and there appears to have been a bit of "history" at the address.....

Doesn't bode well then that the police were "surprised" at what seems to be his exact defence?

Maybe it was a terrible accident.

Maybe all those commenting have never lived in fear of the horrific crimes committed in Africa on a daily basis.

Maybe he is guilty.

Nobody knows yet, but lets all have a laugh and do the usual Judge, jury and executioner bit.

Well done.

yeah becasuse you never make assumptions about anything  - its a forum , people express opinions and discuss them - its what its for

Typical arrogant and stupid response.

no more arrogant or stupid than the post it was responding to - who made you an arbiter of what should or shouldnt be said here ? - how arrogantly do you think your 'well done' comment comes accross ?

of course people are going to discuss their thoughts about whether Pistorious is guilty or not thats pretty much what the thread is for , I'm sure most people don't need to be told that whatever they say is only their opinion and not a fact about his actual guilt or innocence

I think he and his super model girlfriend could afford to live pretty much where ever they wished and be safe.

He's as guilty as.
If I thought an intruder was in my house the first thing I would do is make sure my wife and kid are with me and safe. Not shoot and hope I hit something.

I bet the guy who beat him in the Olympics is glad he didn't live close he'd of probably got some lead too......

:lol::lol:

I'm sure one of the articles I've read since this happened said that he tweeted a while ago along the lines of he wondered what he would do if actually faced with an intruder in the house. Has well documented penchant for firearms too, and knowing how to use them. I obviously have no idea what happened that night, but I have to admit the whole thing smells of three day old tuna to me.

We will soon find out.

One point I find strange is that he was on the balcony and then went inside heard a noise and then decided to put his legs on........what was he arseing about on the balcony for?

I'd laugh....if that were funny

Well, there'll be a verdict at the end, but the whole truth may never be known

That's very true. I just hope it was an accident.

If I were a defence barrister, I'd be thinking very hard to explain why Reeva Steenkamp left her boyfriend asleep in bed but locked the bathroom door he then fired through. If I were a prosecuting council, I'd have a very easy explanation!

Don't women lock the bathroom door in your house then?

Not in mine they don't. She never locks the door. Neither do I come to think of it. Not when we are alone anyway.

We still have an outside lav, so they have to!

Alone? two of you? hmmm.....

So from seeing his statement a few gaping holes jump out at me: 1. He hears the intruder when out on the balcony - goes to get his gun from under the bed where he fails to notice that his girlfriend is no longer sleeping. 2. He screams at the intruder and Reeva apparently fails to call back something to the tune of "It's just me in here you plonker". 3. He batters the door down with a cricket bat - is that likely? I'd imagine the bat would break before the door?!.

Cricket bat could break a door down without breaking. I have done it!

Really? How dramatic of you! Ok fair enough then.

I do hope that he didn't deliberately kill Reeva. I really admired him. She's dead either way though so I don't suppose it makes much difference to her family what happens now.

not to mention that he's outside on the balcony without his legs, then doesnt put his legs on before confronting an intruder

and the intruder is in the bathroom with the door locked

but if he was asleep in bed, and woke up thinking he heard an intruder... he had time to put his legs on, find his gun and somehow not notice the bed was empty... to then go and shoot his missus in the bathroom... there's been reports they're looking at an ipad found at the scene that was turned on and also a cricket bat that was covered in blood too...

all seems to me he probably did do it in a premeditated way!

:

yep - if i had that degree of cash and lived in SA i'd live in one of those secure enclosure developments with its own patrol and a 24hr armed response on panic button. (although actually i think i'd be inclined to just move somewhere safer)

His full statement in respect of bail to the court:

I am an adult male, SA citizen and applicant in this application and seek to be released on bail. I make this affidavit of my own free will and have not been influenced. Contents are true and correct.

I fail to understand how I could be charged with murder let alone premeditated murder as I did not intend to kill my girlfriend. I have no intention to relocate as I love my country. I earn R5.6m a year. I've never been convicted of crimes.

I deny that I committed murder in the strongest point. Even though I don't have to, I want to deal with these allegations.
We agreed to spend evening at home. By 22:00 we were in bedroom, she was doing yoga, I was watching TV with prosthetic legs off. At the end of the evening we got into bed. Reeva had bought me a present for Valentine's Day. We were deeply in love and couldn't be happier. I loved her and I know she felt the same way. She got into bed and we fell asleep.

I have been a victim of crime before. For that reason I keep 9mm gun under the bed. I'm acutely aware of violent criminals breaking in. I've got death threats. I went out on balcony and heard a noise in the bathroom. I felt a "sense of terror" rush through me. Because I did not have my legs on I felt vulnerable. I fired shots through the bathroom door and told Reeva to call police. Reeva was not in bed. That's when it occurred to me she could have been in bathroom. Bathroom door was locked.

I Opened the toilet door and Reeva was alive. I took her to bathroom, called Netcare, picked her up and went downstairs. I tried to revive Reeva but she died in my arms. I am mortified.

With the benefit of hindsight I realise that Reeva went to the bathroom when I went to close the balcony door. I trust the South African legal system and the facts will show that I did not murder Reeva. I believe the forensic evidence will prove what I am saying. I used a cricket bat to break open toilet door.

I have no intention to interfere with any witnesses. I have no previous convictions. I am not disposed to violence. I am an international sports star, I will not evade my trial. I am willing to surrender my passports should it be a condition of bail. After the incident, I did not attempt to flee. I remained until the police arrived. My continued incarceration will be of "no benefit" to the state. Release would not disturb the public order.

And an even more detailed statement has been released for the night concerned

By about 22h00 on 13 February 2013 we were in our bedroom. She was doing her yoga exercises and I was in bed watching television. My prosthetic legs were off. We were deeply in love and I could not be happier. I know she felt the same way. She had given me a present for Valentine's Day but asked me only to open it the next day.

After Reeva finished her yoga exercises she got into bed and we both fell asleep.

I am acutely aware of violent crime being committed by intruders entering homes with a view to commit crime, including violent crime. I have received death threats before. I have also been a victim of violence and of burglaries before. For that reason I kept my firearm, a 9mm Parabellum, underneath my bed when I went to bed at night.

During the early morning hours of 14 February 2013, I woke up, went on to the balcony to bring the fan in and closed the sliding doors, the blinds and the curtains. I heard a noise in the bathroom and realised that someone was in the bathroom. I felt a sense of terror rushing over me. There are no burglar bars across the bathroom window and I knew that contractors who worked at my house had left the ladders outside. Although I did not have my prosthetic legs on I have mobility on my stumps.

I believed that someone had entered my house. I was too scared to switch a light on. I grabbed my 9mm pistol from underneath my bed. On my way to the bathroom I screamed words to the effect for him/them to get out of my house and for Reeva to phone the police. It was pitch dark in the bedroom and I thought Reeva was in bed. I noticed that the bathroom window was open. I realised that the intruder/s was/were in the toilet because the toilet door was closed and I did not see anyone in the bathroom. I heard movement inside the toilet. The toilet is inside the bathroom and has a separate door. It filled me with horror and fear of an intruder or intruders being inside the toilet.

I thought he or they must have entered through the unprotected window. As I did not have my prosthetic legs on and felt extremely vulnerable, I knew I had to protect Reeva and myself. I believed that when the intruder/s came out of the toilet we would be in grave danger. I felt trapped as my bedroom door was locked and I have limited mobility on my stumps.

I fired shots at the toilet door and shouted to Reeva to phone the police. She did not respond and I moved backwards out of the bathroom, keeping my eyes on the bathroom entrance. Everything was pitch dark in the bedroom and I was still too scared to switch on a light. Reeva was not responding.

When I reached the bed, I realised that Reeva was not in bed. That is when it dawned on me that it could have been Reeva who was in the toilet. I returned to the bathroom calling her name. I tried to open the toilet door but it was locked. I rushed back into the bedroom and opened the sliding door exiting on to the balcony and screamed for help. I put on my prosthetic legs, ran back to the bathroom and tried to kick the toilet door open. I think I must then have turned on the lights.

I went back into the bedroom and grabbed my cricket bat to bash open the toilet door. A panel or panels broke off and I found the key on the floor and unlocked and opened the door. Reeva was slumped over but alive.

I battled to get her out of the toilet and pulled her into the bathroom. I phoned Johan Stander who was involved in the administration of the estate and asked him to phone the ambulance. I phoned Netcare and asked for help. I went downstairs to open the front door.

I returned to the bathroom and picked Reeva up as I had been told not to wait for the paramedics, but to take her to hospital. I carried her downstairs in order to take her to the hospital. On my way down Stander arrived. A doctor who lives in the complex also arrived. Downstairs, I tried to render the assistance to Reeva that I could, but she died in my arms.

I am absolutely mortified by the events and the devastating loss of my beloved Reeva. With the benefit of hindsight I believe that Reeva went to the toilet when I went out on the balcony to bring the fan in. I cannot bear to think of the suffering I have caused her and her family, knowing how much she was loved. I also know that the events of that tragic night were as I have described them and that in due course I have no doubt the police and expert investigators will bear this out.

That statement couldn't be further from the truth. As the relative of someone who has been killed by another person, it most certainly DOES make a difference to know whether it was accidental or premeditated; and if it turns out to be premeditated, you want to see some appropriate justice.

Following the twitter feed of Andrew Harding shows the prosecution case is falling apart pretty quickly. It seems the investigating officer arrived with a particular mindset and didn't let the facts get in the way.

Isn't it only for bail that there are current court proceedings and not about a murder trial as such?

Yes this is just the bail hearing.

Did he really say the bit i've bolded? :cuckoo:

Edit: As far as i'm concerned he's guilty of murder even if he's telling the truth. How can you fire a gun through a door knowing someone is likely to be on the other side and not expect to kill them?

He may not have been trying to kill her but he was certainly trying to kill someone (IMO).
