OS X 10.7 Lion

Just cannot quite get use to the fact they have changed the back / forward gestures in Safari and that the scroll is reversed when you install. Love the full screen though.

That's the one thing I don't like, so I went into System Preferences and switched it back to normal :-)

Apart from that Lion is running perfectly on my iMac. Actually seems to have sped it up a bit. The full screen apps are great, and the 2 finger swish to switch apps works very well.

Well worth the £21!

I also reversed the scroll, as it was annoying (backwards) everything seems to run ok, also upgraded the ram (will be here tomorrow hopefully)

How do you swish apps with 2 fingers?
Also, can you activate launchpad with a swipe?
AND scroll through tabs in safari?

Cheers

Ah, i've found it.. ignore the above, it tells you in settings for the trackpad what does what.

OS X Lion will no longer support PPC Rosetta applications. That really matters little as 99.9% of software has been updated to tun on current Intel Macs. But the fact that the PPC (G3/G4/G5) Mac has not been made for some 6 years now has not motivated the people at xrite to update its colorimeter software to work on Intel Macs. So once you convert to Lion or buy a new Lion-equipped Mac, your old EyeOne or Monaco Optix colorimeter is junk. It will not work as the software cannot be loaded..

Well that's Lion out the window for me, as I use the EyeOne Display2 for screen calibration

The PPC thing is probably not going to be much of an issue to most people. If you run ACTIVITY MONITOR and look at the "Kind" column it tells you if it is Intel, Intel (64 bit) or PPC. Snow Leopard dropped support for the PPC, this is just the next logical step. Lion will not even support ALL intel processors, it only supports Core 2 Duo onwards so the earlier intel machines are stuck at Snow Leopard too.

1. Purchase and download Lion from the Mac App Store on any Lion compatible Mac running Snow Leopard.
2. Right click on “Mac OS X Lion” installer and choose the option to “Show Package Contents.”
3. Inside the Contents folder that appears you will find a SharedSupport folder and inside the SharedSupport folder you will find the “InstallESD.dmg.” This is the Lion boot disc image we have all been waiting for.
4. Copy “InstallESD.dmg” to another folder like the Desktop.
5. Launch Disk Utility and click the burn button.
6. Select the copied “InstallESD.dmg” as the image to burn, insert a standard sized 4.7 GB DVD, and wait for your new Lion Boot Disc to come out toasty hot.

Hi mate. Read this on the web, however when the disk is loaded and I reboot holding the C key it doesn't launch anything? So I can't install Lion as a fresh clean install and take advantage of disc utility.

I can't have it on my 6 year old Macbook, the app store says it needs at least 2GB RAM and cannot complete my purchase, my machine only has 1GB RAM...... blast, damn and balderdash....

looks like Lauren needs a memory upgrade :D

Just out of interest, what is the build version. Should be something like 11Axxx.

Upgraded fine on the macbook but I can't find the Lion package for DVD production purposes :(

Any ideas?

AARGGGHHH :bang:

I just read this and thought great, I can get it free, bought my refurbished MPB from Apple on line store mid June. Found the confirmation email to check date and clicked on link. Input details - 'Sorry, we cant find your serial number' I checked it but they still cant find it, so I have to apply for a voucher, and to do that they want a hi-res scanned copy of the invoice - the one that is sitting with the accountant! Have sent them copy of the email, but I bet they reject it. I thought Apple 'just worked', surely they are tech savvy enough to be able to keep a record of all serial numbers sold? :sulk:

edit: ok, now really annoyed, just clicked on the link to qualifying models and they seem to list all but mine, a 2011 machine! Whats so offensive about it? Seriously sulking now :shake:

downloading now.... i should go sleep, but ahh heck, might as well finish

It's not going to be an issue IF we get updates from the vendors

I only have 7 PPC applications, running on my 10.6.8 iMac but they are for my screen calibration app, and a couple from CANON one of them being RAW Image Task which could be very important if using Canon software to process images.

I also saw this at The Digital Picture website

As with any new operating system release, software compatibility must be considered.

The first compatibility consideration for Canon DSLR owners is that Canon EOS Utility reportedly does not work under Mac OS X Lion.

Nikon has issued the following statement regarding Mac OS X version 10.7 Lion Compatibility (note that "plan to test" does not mean "currently functions properly"):

We plan to test the Macintosh versions of the following software applications for compatibility with Mac OS X version 10.7 (some older applications will not be tested). We will announce our plans regarding full compatibility once testing is complete.

- Capture NX 2
- ViewNX 2
- Camera Control Pro 2
- WT-4 Setup Utility/Thumbnail Selector
- nik Color Efex Pro 3.0
- PC-PJ Transfer

We do not intend to provide compatibility with the following applications.

- Capture NX Ver. 1.x
- Camera Control Pro Ver. 1.x
- Nikon Capture series
- ViewNX Ver. 1.x
- Nikon Transfer Ver. 1.x
- PictureProject
- Nikon View series
- Nikon Scan series
- PictureProject COOLPIX Remote Control
- WT-3 Setup Utility
- Wireless Camera Setup Utility
- Wireless Connecting Utility
- nik Color Efex Pro 2.0

If you have already installed it lion deletes the install package when complete.

I got caught out by that too. Luckily I'd done a SuperDuper clone just before and could pull it back from that to create my USB boot disk.

dont know how true this is but canon told us they didnt ever receive a pre-release copy of SL to develop drivers for when that was released so there was a month or so delay in getting some printers sorted. dont know if lion will be the same.

like i say i dont know if that was a fob-off but there shouldnt be any reason why current software wont be patched fairly quick, i wouldnt expect miracles on older versions though.

Reboot with the [CMD] key held down (using a WIRED keyboard).

You DID create the disc from the IMG file using DISC EDITOR not just copy the file onto a DVD :D

My Epson R2400 was unusable for 2 months when SL came out!

I followed the guides on the web and made a flash drive boot and a DVD one too. My issue is when I boot and hold the key down( tried C and tried option key) it just won't do anything. If I do the same with the SL disc it's fine? Also, I only have the Bluetooth keyboard that came with the iMac.

Confused!

I have a cheapo £3 USB keyboard which I stash away just in case but if it is working with the SL disc then there is an issue with the Lion disc you created, check another tutorial on creating the disc maybe. I haven't got the retail SL yet.

I have only skim read that bit atm, but didn't I see somewhere it can only be done with a wired keyboard?

Edit: Darren beat me to it.

Just wish I knew why they were so averse to my machine and the Lion upgrade. I have re-read the lists of qualifying machines, and mine is a refurb that actually appears in their 'new' list, it is the current model as far as I know, just an Apple refurbed one. Will be interesting to see if I get the App Store code, because I shall be kicking up a fuss if I don't. I know £21 is nothing, but on principal I will be a bit annoyed!

It SHOULD work with a BT one but on occasion I have sat there whilst the machine has rebooted 3-4 times and not picked up that I am pressing a key. Then stuck the wired one on and it's worked, just keep it for emergencies.

Well I have on of the orginal iMac Core Duo plus I run scanning software for 2 scanners both of which need Rosetta so thats me not upgrading.

yeah, we had most of a design dept that could use our big Canons with Firey boxes  thatll learn them to buy their own kit without IT input.. :D

The same printer didn't work for 2 weeks when Leopard came out. I'd be interested to see if it works with Lion.....

at a risk of making myself sound a bit stupid here - when updating apple OS's do you need to to a full back-up of your files or anything? ive never updated my mac OS before as i got it with snow leopard on.

now i know on windows it completely reformats hard drives when reinstalling, but what about updating on a mac? im presuming it just updates and viola it works?

Yup, when you do the Lion Upgrade, it's exactly that - an upgrade, so basically everything will be as before once you've upgraded.

However - I would strongly advise you to back up any important files / photos etc before doing the upgrade. Computers can and do go wrong!!! Even macs lol ;)

Officially NO as Apple's OS installer moves stuff around and generally does things the NICE way.

Unofficially I DO as anything that does that much to your computer can go wrong so best to make sure you don't loose everything.

cheers guys, clears things up for me! was planning on making a back-up before upgrading either way but wasn't sure if it would mean id have to reinstall anything or do any drastic things to revert my files/apps back to how they are now.

Would the standard Time Machine back up be enough?

Yup, that's a complete copy of your system effectively. it's what I relied on :)

Just downloaded Lion - no issues that I've found so far. It seems nice and snappy. The finger swipes and gestures are much smoother and nicer to use on the touch pad - not that they were bad before, but they're noticeably smoother now.

Just have to find my way around now - the jury's out till then.
