Anybody use this service? The OS have done away with their old getamap service so now if you want to get proper 1:2500 maps you have to pay. One of the benefits of the new site supposedly is that it's mobile friendly. Wondering if anybody uses the service out and about on a device?

The website doesn't work on my windows phone with wifi connectivity, let alone actually out and about with no data connection.

I use the OS Mapfinder App on android and it is OK, I do think the maps are expensive compared to the paper version though

viewranger with openOS maps, free :)

Does that get you the full 1:25000 maps?

Depends what you use it for, I haven't looked at Open Street Map for a while but last time I did it lacked landscape features (contours, vegetation, etc.) public rights of way, boundaries (Access Land, National Parks, etc.) and other details. Seemed OK for roads, streets and urban though.

With ViewRanger, you do get 1:50000 and 1:25000 maps, but you have to pay for them. They are downloaded to a folder on your device so connection isn't needed.
You can get OpenCycleMap for free, but they are not as detailed as aforementioned. All depends on what you need to use it for.
I have used VR since it came out and wouldn't use any other.

I had and probably still have Open Street Maps on a micro card in my GPS unit. Used the GPS a lot when on the mtb. Never trusted the maps on the hills. I used to print copies of OS maps at 1:10,000 and use them. I have the full OS maps for the whole country (don't ask!) on my PC.

The Open Street Maps were OK for road stretches but off road I found them severely lacking.

Indeed, same here :)

I use memory map on pc and the app on my ipad for 4x4 greenlane driving. Ive got 1:25 and 1:50 maps. Cost a fair bit, but its nice and easy to plot routes. You can buy "chunks" rather than entire areas, so you just active separate tiles that you want. Works out cheaper than buying the whole UK.
I also have view ranger and Ive got the road tour outdoors map apps too with 1:50k mapping for various regions.
Memory map is the best though Ive found.

Another vote for memory map, I have the full British isles on 1;25000 cost me hundreds of pounds when it first came out as you had to buy it by region

Just resurrecting this thread as I got an email today from the OS telling me about their new 3D mapping feature included with online subscriptions, which seems very cool. Sadly you can't get down low enough to use it to perfectly plan landscape shots, but it does give a very good feel for the lie of the land, especially skylines.

Alan, I don't know if you still have a Windows Phone, but if you do, then try GeoGPS. Free trial and about 7 quid to buy. Uses OS map tiles at 1:25000 and 1:50000 (which it fetches and caches from Bing) and provides excellent functionality. I now use it in preference to Memory Map which was on a dedicated PDA.

Oops I've resurrected the wrong thread, I meant to resurrect Mickledore's one about whether it was worth subscribing to OS maps, thinking the 3D aerial view might sway it for potential customers.
