I don't think there's an issue reposting something that was published on facebook but I may be wrong? Anyway...

Just to put in context and for those unaware, State of Origin is a best of three games rugby league series contested annually between the Australian states of Queensland and New South Wales. It is marketed over here as 'sport's greatest rivalry'. Hmmm. It is without doubt the biggest hyped up event of the year in any sport and probably of interest to more people than the Grand Final of the NRL as it obviously covers two whole states not just club teams. Also bear in mind that Rugby League is still bigger than football in Queensland and I'd probably say nation wide.

It is a great event, the fans love it, the rivalry is great, not sure I'd agree on their statement of 'sport's greatest rivalry' though.

Anyway, the NRL posted out this image during the game of one of the first try celebrations of last night's game...

I've left the black top and bottom to show the exact crop. I haven't cropped at all.

I'm just interested in people's opinion of that level of sporting event and organisation putting out a screen grab from the TV coverage to their fans (over 1 million on fb alone)? Especially when they take so much care to control every tiny detail of the games image and coverage.

That coupled with the fact that they have a pool of at least 6 regular photographers at NRL games (not sure how many were there at origin, but I guess at least 3 or 4 update: they had 5 there), I was just pretty surprised to see that go out instead of a decent shot. They have some really good photographer's there.

Maybe I'm being too critical, it's only gone out on fb, but still, when they had such good photographers there, why not put out a better shot? I find it hard to believe that none of them would have got a decent shot of any of the try being scored or the celebration, in fact there's no way of that! Update: They just posted up a gallery and one of their guys did get that shot.

Anyway, just food for thought. Maybe I shouldn't be as bothered as I am!

Cheers.

Pretty poor. I guess they just wanted to be 'first' to post something seconds after it happened, and therefore get the shares and likes. Looks like the post got decent traction for them. The guys would've been wiring live from the game of course, but a s***ty screen grab can beat that by a few minutes. Whether they would've been better or worse off waiting two minutes and posting a decent shot, who knows?

The Ashes and the AFL Grand Final are bigger events anyway, even the Melbourne Cup gets as many viewers... ;)

Yea, I guess you're right. Just seems like good imagery is an after thought when it comes to the instant gratification of getting 'likes' etc. Their photographers would have been at least as quick as getty etc to send images out plus they already have the 1 million facebook fans captive and they aren't trying to get them to papers etc. They could've had that image up on facebook within a couple of minutes I reckon.

Haven't been here for an ashes but I meant domestic competition, should've said. As for AFL, yea, I just looked up the figures out of interest and the AFL final just beat Origin game 2 last year, thought if you total the amount of people who watch the series you'd obviously get more watching Origin. Melbourne Cup, yea around the same figures watching that, but I think a small percentage of those people follow horse racing on facebook etc except for that one race.

I was just making the point that the series is up there with the very biggest events in Aus. When living in the UK and not following Aussie rugby I had never heard of it, but I don't think you'd find a single Aussie who didn't know what Origin was! I guess the TV coverage in QLD will differ to you guys in VIC, you cannot escape it here!

PS. AFL, what the hell is all that about? Terrible game. 1 point for missing the goal?!! I tried to get into it but nope. I haven't been to the Gabba yet as I was away for the Big Bash League and the Cricket world cup game featuring Aus was rained off. I really want to go but it looks like I'll have to go watch AFL if I want to go any time soon!

Yep, it's pretty poor. But then, we're in Australia - hardly the most sophisticated place on the planet... the FB page was probably being managed by some kid who was halfway through a slab of 4X when he posted that.

Ha, yea it's taken me the better part of 8 years to get into. Still hard to really care though, it's all so fake with the blatant money-grabbing franchising of teams. How can people be passionate about a manufactured corporate team?

'Moving' Fitzroy up to Brisbane, or South Melbourne up to Sydney... umm, why not just start a new team in Brisbane or Sydney? Then they throw cash at the new teams until they get to a final and get some glory supporters. Not to mention the fact that the fixtures are rigged. What kind of league doesn't just play each team twice, home and away?

oh so true.

yep they are just shackle dragger's after all.
State of Origin is big in New Zealand as well, and as for the pic, pretty bloody poor on all accounts.
