Organising software for MAC

First of all, I'm new to this forum so hello! Happy I've found what looks a decent photography forum.

I'm curious as to what you guys use for your photo organising? I'm a total amateur and my interest grows hugely everyday.

I own a Macbook Pro and therefore I currently use iPhoto for my photos... It's perfect for the typical family, IE family photos with face recognition etc however I find it a little too "Fisher Price Hold your hand" style if you get what I mean?

I fancy using a program that's more professional and is easier to categorise images.

For editing I use Photoshop CS4.

and of course Aperture which I believe is now available as an app at a very sensible price

Aperture is a lot cheaper at the moment but the best thing to do would be to download the trials and have a play.

I would definitely recommend lightroom over aperture. I had aperture on my 15" pro, and it was horribly sluggish at times.
I tried sorting it out with apple, but without any luck so changed to LR3, and haven't had any problems since.
Personally wouldn't bother with aperture again.

Agreed, It can be. Giving my Mac 8gigs of ram helped, but what I find truly astonishing is the way Aperture eats it all up. Just flicking through a few photos and viewing at 100% pretty much ends up grabbing all the RAM that's available - I've watched this with Activity Monitor.

I'm not going to say it's a bad program, I use it all the time and am happy with it, plus given the price it's now available at it's a bit of a bargain. However I'm fast coming to the conclusion that Lightroom is a better product. I'm not going to switch personally as Aperture does what I want it to, and I can deal with it's foibles.

In essence Aperture = good, competent & great value, whereas Lightroom = better, faster, but a whole lot more expensive.

I run a mac with lightroom and love it but its a hungry beast too, I have 12 GB RAM and it struggles if you use the adjustment brushes a lot. One of the reasons I still use photoshop so much, the history in LR when doing selective adjustments and large catalogues seem to be lightrooms biggest weakness.
