Over the years we have taken many many digi pics of the family, holidays, pets etc etc, Now at 9584 pics in my photo folder and I need to get them organised. Ideally I need a way to easily find duplicates but not based on the name, and then to be able to batch rename. Examples of the problem may be a certain holiday spread over 2 or 3 folders, and the 1st pic in each folder is call 1.jpeg. I want to be able to then put all those pics together and bath name them to spain 2008-1.jpg oe whatever...

Then its just a matter of getting them organised, going through and deleting all the crap ones and then finding an online backup service just in case I loose my HD...

Any thoughts?

I've found there is only one way of doing it. get your head down and plow through them.

You should probably take a look at Aperture or Lightroom for photo management. Although, I'm not sure if they'll do exactly what you want (duplicate finder), but it should help you organize them quicker.

acdsee has a very good duplicate finder. it searches either by file name or image similarity. Should be able to get a trial copy if you google for acdsee. It will also do batch functions with ease.

However, I'd recommend you use Lightroom for management as the acdsee database has a habit of easily corrupting. That's not a problem for what you want but would be if use it for image management in the long term.
