Organising digital images

I was looking through my growing collection of digital images tonight and I started to think there must be a better way of organising images than copying from camera and renaming each file and creating a folder based on content.

How do you organise your photo gallery and which software do you use.

Have a look at lightroom 3. I have just stayed using the software and a impressed.

+1 for lightroom , im just starting with it but seems very easy to use
