Yes
Is purchasing the OS app and buying tiles the only way to have access to the non paper version of OS maps offline or are there any alternatives I can consider please

view range seems to work really well.

viewranger is great. Also their help is brilliant.
I use it for walking and recording routes to geotag photos

Depends what specification of maptile you want.
Viewranger is fine if all you need is land ranger 1:50000 or explorer 1:250000
If you need a scale less than that then im not sure what else there is other than the OS

Well they do topo maps, 50 & 25,000 as mentioned, open street maps, open cycle maps, open piste maps, aerial imagery, transport maps, road maps, global maps, trails guides for walking & cycling. Some of them for free!

If you get GoogleEarth for Android you can go to the bottom of the page and choose, "use this map offline" .(y)

Thanks for the replies. I'm only looking for the 50 & 25000 OS maps
