Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade to an slr, hoping now's the time to jump in.

I'd love to get the best, but really I just want the best value for money, something that won't depreciate too much so when I can afford, I'll upgrade.

Have people had many problems with second hand cameras? Scratches in mirrors/lenses etc, wear and tear?

I don't know what MegaPixel to go for - somewhere between 6 and 10, but ultimately the end image quality, I suppose there are some 8mp which are better than some 10mp etc?

I have a 3.5mp manual & auto non-slr, not great, so I suppose anything for £200 will be much better. (Got it for £450 second hand at the time, now worth £70!!)

Has anyone had any good dslr cameras before the 350/400 generation?

Cheers
Jody

got a 300d and I'm perfectly happy with it, only 6mp but I love the photo's... might be able to pick one up second hand cheap

I have a 350d which I'm currently selling for £250, which seems o be pretty cheap, thus I would imagine you could find a 300d for a little cheaper (second hand), and that would probably be a nice starter option :). Personally I would set the budget a little higher, because at around £200 whilst you will obviously be buying second hand (at least for a DSLR) you're asking for trouble.

If you could stretch to £300 it would open up a lot more choices. Second hand DSLRs go for £300-£350 quite a lot. I recently bought a Nikon D70 with 18-70mm lens, second hand but good condish, for £349. This is a good second hand dealer.

Just noticed they have a 300d with kit lens for £299 - 'tis a piccy of a filter atm but I'm sure they'll realise soon and correct it

Cool, no point spending £200 if I'll just end up regretting it. so a 300d is a maybe if a good supplier - and 350d/400d if I bite the bullet or hunt for a good deal. Just one question, I wonder when the next generation is coming out? It seems it was 300d->350d->400d, all roughly the same price when they came out?

Not sure about that (I'm a Nikonian :D) but Ffordes is a very good dealer. My d70 arrived after a few days, well packaged, with all the stuff (charger, battery, 256mb card). According to the counter it had only done about 3k shutter clicks.

But canon aint the only type - check out Nikon, olympus, etc...

Even the 3MP Canon D30 takes nice pictures.

I'm not sure what D60s and 10Ds are going for now but I got some great stuff with my 10D.

I've decided I'm going to look for a camera that has a screen bigger than 1.8 inch because I've decided view finders and I don't get along! Maybe I should wait until I find a decent priced 350/400d or equivalent. thanks for everyone's input

The D30 - it's 3MP from the looks of it? lol.. I think I'll wait! :P thanks tho

Im curious about this comment. I just wanted to make sure that you are aware that you can't view the image that you are going to take through the screen? On a SLR (except the Olypmus E330 and Canon 1D as far as I know), all shots are taken through the viewfinder, with the screen to review them once the shot has been taken.

Also what are you going to be doing with your shots once you have taken them? Are they simply for the computer, or for printing out? I ask, as a 3MP camera, although small by todays standards is perfectly good at capturing great pictures. the extra resolution is needed if you want to crop heavily or blow the shot up big.

Messiah Khan is correct - a DSLR is designed so you can only view through the viewfinder, unless you are going to spend a lot more money. Olympus have started doing these but again, I doubt you'd find anything in your budget.
I sold a Canon 10D for £280 recently - brilliant camera, 6.3mp - may be worth having a look for a good used example?

Yes, you need a new 1D MkIII with "live view" if you want to see the image on the back before taking...

However, given that the *review* function on even the top end cameras tells you little more than was the composition good and displays exposure graphs (probably the most useful aspect), I can't see its a great leap forward.

The beauty of the SLR design (and not just the digital ones) is the view finder giving you the most accurate display of the subject "through the lens", why chuck this away to try and see it on a crappy little LCD - your eye has more receptors than a small LCD display ;-)

If you don't care about the detail, get one of the compacts - my friend has just got a Panasonic Lumix FX-30 and I think its a corking little thing!

Personally, I'd go with a 10D. I have one  and I prefer it by miles to the 350D a friend uses.

Just feels so much more of a real "tool", lots more flexibility as you learn and provides just as good images.

Go on...... you know it makes sense ;).

Yup, I said that. It also takes cracking pictures and has enough res to print good pictures at 12x8. Coupled with decent glass, it's a proper camera.

It's easy to get carried away with megapixels but there is more to a camera. A 1D is 4Mp but they still sell for £1000!!!

And to add to that the Nikon D2Hs is 'only' 4mp but still regarded as one of the best sports cameras Nikon has made - and they are £2k at WE.
