Hi,

I have a Canon EOS 600D with Twin lens kit. My EFS18-55IS Kit lens has stopped working and I am looking for advice to replace the kit lens with something with better performance. The options that I am considering are:

1. Replace it with a the newer EFS18-55 IS STM
2. Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II VC (or the non VC version)
3. Sigma 17-50 F2.8 EX DC (OS) HSM

Also looking at getting a Canon 50mm or 40mm prime

I want to photograph people, landscapes and street photos.

Many thanks for your advice

Depends...how much do you want to spend?
I use the 15-85 and another highly recommended lens is the 17-55. Both are Canon lenses.

EFS 17-55 USM IS. Awesome lens.

Of the three you list definitely the Tamron. A real step up from the kit lens and not too expensive. Go for the non VC version. They are generally sharper.

Hi

Thanks vey much for the advice. Unfortunately canon EFS 17-55 USM and the 17-55 is out of my price range. I am thinking you to about $750 NZD that is about £370 I think.

You could get a non VC Tammy 17-50 s/h for around £170 that would leave you enough for a 50mm 1.8.

if you can manage another £80.00 you will get a mint second hand 17-55 f2.8 canon for £450 , I've never used the Tamron but its supposed to be good.

Your 600D isn't going to get the best use from the 18-55 STM, whilst being sharper than the IS II version the STM motor wont be any use on the 600D. The Tamron is supposed to be the best out of the other two you've listed and the non VC version is supposed to be sharper than the VC version, but there's not much in it. If you're happy with the range then the Tamron would be best bang for buck IMO.

I'd agree with this. I've had the Tamron 17-50 non vc and recently upgraded to the Canon. I love it, the IS is super useful and the IQ is exceptional. Only thing I would say is that its big and heavy and doesn't balance as well on the 600D as the Tamron.

If saving the extra isn't an option, then I would go for the Tamron. An excellent lens

Hi all,
Thanks for all your advice. I bought a Canon 50mm F1.8 Prime and I am loving it. I alos found another zoom within my price range: Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM for about $800 NZD/ £400 wich is about my limit. I guess this is an improvement over my IS 18-55 kit lens. Would I be better off going with the Tamron / Sigma 17-55 lenses with F2.8.

Cheers

The Canon 15-85IS lens is a good lens and gets a good following, certainly is an improvement over the 18-55IS lens.

I would suggest, if possible, you try the lenses out, see which you prefer the results from etc...

I wanted thank every one for their advice. I bought a Sigma 17-50 F2.8 EX DC (OS) HSM in the end. Huge improvement over the kit lens and seems take sharp pictures with vibrant colours. I got it for $ 670 NZD (£330). look forward to going carzy with the new lens.
