Hi TP.

I'm in the market for a 5D3 as I think the jump to ff will benefit me in many ways.

I'm having difficulties deciding what to do with regards to purchasing it.

Im pushing myself to get it from Digital Rev, mainly due to the price.

But I would like to buy it on a 0% finance scheme with a £1000ish upfront deposit. I do have the cash to buy it outright but I'd rather pay the other £1000 off 12 monthly instalments of £83.33, just as It would be easier on the pocket.

Are there any options out there for me? Or will I have to bite the bullet and pay full price upfront?

Thanks,
Ell.

Elliot,

I don't know of any 0% deals at the moment, but have you considered getting a Cashback credit card - see MoneySavingExpert.

You may also like to consider purchasing from Kerso (Ian Kerr at FlashCamera) - just a couple of assists for you to consider.

It seems HMR&C are having a bit of a crack down on undervalued items originating from Hong Kong if comments in various other threads are anything to go by, whether there is any truth in that, and whether the promises to pay duty/tax are worth anything or not if it comes to it.

If you want finance, then you'll either need to pay it on a credit card, preferably with a 0% deal or one of the few people doing a deal. NewJessops(tm) is doing 0% at the moment. £ 2329 body only - but the finance company would probably prefer someone with a good credit history.

Problem with that is I'm 18 with 0 credit. I was considering that, but only card I can get is an aqua card. With a horrid 34%apr and barley any credit.
That did make me think. Would pay4later finance options accept me with a 50% deposit?

I really think It's going to have to be DR. I am quite stingy at the moment, £300 is a fair amount of money to save if possible.

Clifton cameras have 0% over 12 months

Was actually looking at clifton cameras as an alternative to my local shop. The guy at my local shop is really arrogant, rude and unhelpful so I don't want to do any business with them. Was going to buy a 5D3, 85mm/50 1.2 with them but they've lost me as a customer!

HDEW have it up for £1925 if you're not wanting credit. http://www.hdewcameras.co.uk/canon-eos-5d-mark-iii-body-961-p.asp

I want to have it on a 0% Intrest finance, but at the Digital rev/hdewcamera price.

But, I'll give hdew a ring and shop around seeing if anyone wants to match hdewcamera's price (I keep getting told by people that camera shops wont bring the price down/match as DR is HK, not UK) So I may have more luck saying that HDEW is based in the UK.

Has anyone used HDEWCAMERA? what's the service like etc.

Email Panamoz and ask for a price. They're often (sometimes?) cheaper than DR.

I hate to be the party pooper here Elliot, but I guess I'm wondering why you have to have a 5D Mk 111? If it's for fullframe, the original 5D is going for a very cheap £400-odd nowadays and the Mk 11 is way below the Mk 111 price.

Read/Watch some comparisons of the 5D2 and 5D3, image quality is basically identical. Maybe the 5D2 would be a better choice and you can skip the 3 and go straight to the 4 when it's released?

Only reason for a 3 IMO is if getting the shot relies on quick focus, and that that is how you make money. Or if you have the money and want one.

When would you say the 4 will come out?
I was actually considering going medium format as I mainly do studio stuff. But from time to time I do go on locations where hassy would be unsuitable.

The quickest focus Id need would be when doing catwalk/fashion events/weddings really.

I wanted it more for the 2 card slots (1 for eye-fi wireless backup and another for CF obvs) Less noise (I do do quite a few things in low light without strobes) AND regardless of how upright stupid this sounds. I rather the look of the 5d3 than the 2. NOT TO FORGET THE MODE DIAL LOCK. I swear that I've missed a handful of shots when bumping that thing. Should have had the canon replacement service for the 7d.

I will take a day or two to think whether I should get 2 or 3.

I think a 5D2 and more/better glass would suit you better. Watch some comparison videos of the two.

You need to have a pretty high income and work that requires MF to spend the outlay on one, you're only 18 don't get ahead of yourself too much.

5D4, no idea sort of made it up, probably 3 years or so.

I would say don't start using credit if you don't have to. If you've got the cash, buy it outright - even interest free will usually have service charges, etc that mean you end up paying more.

Medium format is a huge investment, and not the tool for event photography and most modern style wedding shooting. If you're penny pinching on on 5D3, then I'm not sure how you could be considering medium format. Normal practice would be to rent MF gear as and when needed, on a job by job basis. Up to the point where you are getting a sufficient amount of work at that level to justify the outlay.

You haven't posted a great deal, but seeing as your profile says, "amateur photographer", I would suggest having a good think about what your really need right now. If you are looking towards work in the future, are there other things you could be investing in in the meantime? Then upgrading camera bodies when you really do need to, and likely technology has moved on, giving you new choices to make.

Youre right. MF is quite a long way down my road I guess. I would have looked at getting a hassy, but Id make more use with the versatility of a FF dslr.

I've got a 70-200 2.8 II and a 50mm 1.4

Im going to be picking up a 100mm 2.8 L macro, 16-35 II and a prime. In the next week or so.

Maybe a 85mm 1.2 I've used the 50mm 1.2 and honestly am not too impressed with the overall quality. Especially when comparing to a sigma 50mm 1.4 and taking the price/quality ratio into consideration.

What other glass would you recommend?

Ive just purchased a canon 5d mk3 & 24-105F4 L IS from hdew camera's, absolutley great service and great communication with them, also got a free sandisk extreme 4gb cf card & 3 years warranty all for £2450. Massive savings over uk prices, i will defo be purchasing from them again when i get my 70-200 2.8 L IS MK2 :-)

See, I'm of the other opinion. In low light the 5d mk3 is far and away better, the focus system is superb (a negative point often leveled at the mk2) and it's got better waterproofing. If all you ever do is shoot in a well lit studio then maybe but in all other situations the 5D mki3 is excellent.

The other point is I agree with the poster above. If you haven't the money now, save for a little longer rather than get into a credit agreement. Sorry but if you can't afford it then wait a little longer and save.

And another vote for Kerso - ask him for a price.

On the other hand, depending on what you are shooting, as said the 5d Mk2's are a lot cheaper, check out mpb for prices.

There's a lot of people doing very good work without the latest and greatest kit. Don't need to get hung up on product creep (which is really easy with camera gear)

+1 for HDEW. I bought my 5Dmk3 from them last year and a 300L f4 last week. Excellent service.

Two card slot is one CF and one SD, with SD fited and working I find burst speed/buffer is very much reduced. Not sure how you'd configure Eye-Fi, is it CF or SD card? Added - SD card is eye-fi.
Recently bought a Mk3 (had a mk1 and a 1Dmk2N) I have to say I'm finding the Mk3 just about perfect at everything I do, which includes macro through to action sport, I bought it for its improved AF, Iso handling and weather proofing.
