Optimum file size for Facebook and Google Pictures

Shooting a road race on Sunday with LOADS of runners. Probably come back with 1000+ images. I use LR6 to process them. When I export the photos, what is the BEST size to make them, so that the quality is reasonable but they will load up quickly? Is there a file size that shows the photo at its best an after that, a larger file size would make no difference?
Hope I've explained myself.
 
As far as I remember 2048 on the longest edge is the maximum resolution for facebook photos so any higher than that and they will get resampled

Thanks for that. I don't like putting them on FB, but it seems to be what people want.
