if i am mounting on a tripod should i turn is/os off?.

i have tried tripod shots and never seem to get anything useable and thought it might be because i never turn os off

Which lens are you using?

Some can have 'IS' on and some have to be turned off when on a tripod like the 28-135mm.

just a sigma 18-200 f3.5-5.6 dc os

Without looking it up I would say it would have to be turned 'off'

Should tell you on the 'Sigma' site somewhere.

yep best option is to turn it off. Also set your timer to 2 seconds, especially if your tripod isn't too sturdy (like mine), that way you can press the shutter, let the movement subside then the shot will automatically fire. Your 400D should have mirror lockup too

I've just searched for this, and apparently, it says in the manual to 'turn it off'

well that explains it then

thanks for the quick replies guys

On Nikon, the manuals say turn VR off for tripod but leave on for monopod.............just as a reference.

I use IS on the tripod all the time. Remember though that this is using a gimbal head with one hand on the lens and one on the camera, so the system is still detecting sufficient movement to be effective. If you doubt the effectiveness of IS in this situation, make this simple test.....

Focus on something and then make a concerted effort to hold the camera as still as you can. You will see the very slightest shimmer of the image in the viewfinder. Now half press the shutter button and as you feel the IS kick in you'll see the image become rock steady in the viewfinder.

Using a tripod with the head completely locked off and releasing the shutter with a remote release or the self timer is where you shouldn't use it, as there's no movement at all to be detected, so it's really a waste of time, and might actually damage the iS system.

Depends what lens it is..

My 300 2.8 IS detects when it's on a tripod, so I tend to keep it on all the time. All it does is take about 20% more juice as the IS still draws current, but IS doesn't work..
