I've been reading a lot of comments from folks on here about these. I'm now looking for some advice.

Why do people consider they're so good? What's the advantage of an Optech strap over the standard one that comes with the camera?

Assuming that the answer to the question above convinces me to buy one - which one should I be looking at for a 30d and 70-200mm?

And lastly, where is the best (for best, read cheapest) place to buy one from please?

I've been a big fan of the op/tech straps for a while now.

you'll not find a better strap for similar or more money :thumbs:

I had an Optech strap. Admittedly it took the weight off .... but the straps kept undoing at the buckles...time after time. The movement up and down as you walked gradually undid them.
I managed to catch my 350d about 4 times before it went.

I now use the canon strap...not as comfy but I dont want to lose my 30d!
 
ive got an optech strap and it really is a great product, by far the best thing ive bought
 
You might have had a defective one Janice, I've had an optech strap on my 350d and had the 100-400 on it more often than not and its never moved an inch.
 
I'll bear in mind to keep my eyes open for that though Janice - thanks for the warning!
 
Janice, this might sound like i'm talking down, but did you thread the strap through the buckles correctly?

When threaded correctly they should have a self tightening action and not move.


Glo, I said that the little silcone rubber bobbles on the inside of the strap might pull your long hair........I don't have that problem :D
 
Alternatively Janice you could put your female sewing skilz to good use and sew the strap ends up to stop them slipping :)
 
I now have two Optech straps, one for each camera. I found that the strap that came with the cameras was very uncomfy and dug into the back of my neck giving me neck ache after a little while.
The Optech straps absorb the weight of the camera and are very comfy. I can walk round for hours now and not get any neck discomfort. I'd highly recommend them. My first one came from Loobylins, I bought the second one at the Focus show at the weekend. They come in a range of colours :) and styles. I just have the basic ones (as they were the cheapest ;) )and find they are fab.
 
Hi Witch - I have a spare OpTech "Classic" strap which I used on my D50 but bought a "Pro" strap when I switched to the much heavier D200 - Not sure how your 30D compares weight-wise with the D50 or D200 but if it was suitable its yours for a tenner ... Paul ;)
 
Can someone take me a photo of the buckles on theirs then? :D
It was really comfy and I like the way you can clip the strap off quick when doing tripod stuff etc. (I bet Ive lost the little end bits now!)

not getting anything there, Paul. Ive just checked and Ive lost one of the little straps with the metal loop on for the end. Damn!

Im sure im threading it right.... when it comes back on itself, it goes through the buckle under the first piece.

Janice try clicking on my Gallery as they were uploaded there - otherwise PM me with your email address & I'll send them to you
The buckle bit slides onto the strap / the end of the strap then goes through your camera D ring / the strap goes back under the same buckle on the strap through both sides & should then it be impossible to for it to slip ... HTH - Paul ;)
 
Thats how I had it Paul and about 10 times one or the other of them would work loose and suddenly come undone! They slowly slide out over a matter of days. I think its the actual bouncing movement of walking with the bouncy optech strap that did it.

Well, it all seems irrelevant now as I have lost one of the little straps!

ROFL - honestly, I'd never have believed that a thread about straps could turn smutty if I'd not read it for myself! :p

Paul - thanks for the offer but I've placed an order for one now from the link that Matt posted! :)

My first SLR came with a nice webbing strap and I actually swapped that onto the D30 when I first got it as it was far more comfortable than the strap that came with. When I passed the D30 on to Ben though the strap stayed with it. The 30D strap isn't quite as comfortable as the webbing one but I'm not sure I trust that one with the weight that it would now have to carry tbh!

I shall let you know my thoughts on the Optech when it arrives! :)
 
Janice....I didn't like the way the loop looked on mine when I installed it, so i took it off and threaded the webbing sections through some heat shrink, did the buckle back up and heated the wrap up.

looks fine and because the webbing is pressed together tightly.....it doesn't move ;)
 
Good idea! I tried again today with the one end of the strap I have left!
if i just pull hard it threads right through and out.
 
I use an op-tech classic with pro loops. It doesn't have op-tech on it in big letters so its a bit more stealthy.

Janice - You do not have the thing on properly IMHO either that or you should be on the Worlds Strongest Woman!
As to the bit you have lost try emailing optech in the UK I'm sure if you flutter your eyes a bit you can get them to send you one :naughty: (I emailed Lowepro about where to get an AW cover for my Mini Trekker & they are sending me one :love:)

Im sure there is only one way to do the strap up Paul. it goes through the camera D ring then back through its own buckle. It can only go under the bit of strap that already goes through the buckle. Then if I pull it... it slides out.

I will take a photo!!

Janice - Just to recap then: The strap has the buckle thing in place (threaded through "over and under") / you then thread the loose end through the camera D ring / you then thread the loose end back through the buckle thing on the strap "over and under" again ?
When I do this and yank on it (careful) the combination of the ridges on the strap & the buckle prevent it from moving downwards (whereas moving the other way to adjust it is pretty easy)

Janice - Totally wrong! - I will take some shots with my spare strap & post them back here for you - give me 30mins ... Paul ;)
 
Im glad its wrong actually.... that means with your help I might end up with it working properly. Now to obtain another one of these little straps.
Can I flutter my eyelashes in an email to Lowepro?? :lol: :D

Janice - Strap yourself in :lol: for the definitive strap course!

Put the buckle on the strap like this:

Pass the pointy end on the strap through the camera D ring like this:

Pass the pointy end of the strap back through the TOP of the buckle on the strap like this:

When you look from the side (before pulling tight) its should look like this:
