Work are auctioning off one of these, a year old ~£1500 at new. I need to replace my crappy laptop and would be interested in opions of this machine. An indication of my max bid would be great too!

Thanks

Excellent machine. I love it. You should check Apple store for refurbished ones. Usually a returned machine with nothing wrong with it, checked & re sold cheaper. And you usually get a guarantee which starts from the day the 1st customer purchased it.

Have one. Works fine. Check you don't have problem with a yellow bias to the bottom right hand side of the screen. It was a problem with some of the early iMac's A grey background will show this up. If it looks good then I'd buy one ( again) Not a fan of the wireless keyboard I miss the numeric keypad. You may want to get a wired one, if you find you can't get on with it. Also treat yourself to a magic mouse ,if it doesn't come with it. Also think about increasing the RAM to 8Gb. Not something you need to do straight away though

With the refurb store you get a full 1 year guarantee from when you buy it, not when the 1st customer purchased it. Many have never been sold but are ex display models etc.

Had that exact machine until before Christmas and couldnt fault it apart from a couple of screen issues. It had a slightly darker band on the bottom of the screen which seems to be a known issue but is not noticable unless your doing something with a white background and even then its hardly noticable. I returned it to Apple for an area of stuck pixels and mentioned the band at the same time, they replaced the screen but it still had the dark band. As they couldnt get rid of it they offered to replace the machine (which was 6 months old) with the new i7 2.93GHz model which was over £300 more than what I paid for the i5 so I'm very pleased with their customer service.

Apart from this issue it was (and the new one is) a fantastic computer, I'd definitely recommend one.

Thanks guys! Now  what to bid (damn blind auctions)

I can recommend the Apple Refurb Store - bought quite a bit of kit off there, never had any issues/problems. As for the iMac, as already mentioned check the screen

A search of completed ones on ebay shows the most expensive recent one went for £1173 and a couple others for between £1000 and £1100.

It depends really whether you want to try to get a bargain or want to pay a bit more for the known history and not having to deal with ebay. Its probably worth at least £1000

Yeah the refurb store would definitely be worth a look - theres a 2010 2.8Ghz i5 and a 2009 i7 on there both at £1429, so I wouldn't go over £1200 for this one, especially as the refurbs will come with a warranty. At that price I'd also probably prefer to find the extra couple of hundred for the refurb, so if it was me I'd stick a lowish bid in and hope for a bargain
