Current line up...d300,d300s, d700, d7200 bodies, tamron 150-600, Nikon 300 f4, Nikon 1.4 tc, (happy with the other smaller length lenses)

Thinking of buying a d500 or d810 or a sigma 150-600 sports or a Nikon 200-500mm

Any thoughts please?

I'm really not sure if another body or above glass is just gas or would be a worthwhile purchase for wildlife, all other photography is second to wildlife shots

I'm leaning toward the sigma with a 1.4tc or a d500 but it's really just because I could spare that amount before Christmas comes to spend on myself

Please help, even if it's to give me a slap and tell me to get a grip...of myself, got grips..lol

[emoji109] sorry cannot find the slap emoji.

Think you already have enough camera's. If the gas is too much may be buy a lens.

What lens though Kev?

Personally I'd sell the lot and consider the following....

Nikon D810
Nikon D500
Nikon 12-24mm f2.8
Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 VRII
Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VRII + TC

And keep your current Nikon 300mm f4 with 1.4x TC and the Tamron 150-600mm

:D

For birds and wildlife Tom

I would sell the 300's and the 700 and the 300mm AF-S f4, (replace this with the PF version because the IQ is as good, but the lens is smaller, lighter and is just marginally better with the 1,7TC and the PF has VR)

+ £1,500

add a D810 and a 300mm f4 PF and 1,7TC, presuming your 1,4TC is a version compatible with the PF

If you are over budget buy used, (nearly new) and replace the D810 with a D750

and then I would "save up" for a 600mm f4 (non VR)

Sell: d300,d300s, d700, Nikon 300 f4, Nikon 1.4 tc
Get: D810 & Nikon 200-500

At £1500 for the D500 I think its a little opverpriced & not so much better (VFM wise) than a D810 / D7200 combo.

I don't really do bif or fast action, so a used d810 is looking good atm

I'm with Rizvan, the d500 is a great bit of kit, sell some bodies

Well going by what I want to p/x with Wex, it should cover a d500 and genuine grip, which should keep me happy until Christmas is past.
Then i'll look at replacing the Tamron 150-600 with the new version or Nikon 200-500mm.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Excellent news..... if I was still a Nikon user I too would have had the D500, its a smashing DX body. :)

Not sure why you'd consider the Nikon 200-500 when you already have the Tamron 150-600? Not sure the Sigma Sport offers enough significant improvement in IQ to warrant the weight and cost.

I'd consider the D810 so you've got the benefit of FF and MP for cropping.

Decided it'll be the d500 as it will encourage me to try bif shots with the tamron, with a view to adding a 300 pf vr after Christmas.
I was thinking of the 200-500 only to keep things 'nikon' really.

I'm really confused by this. With the lenses and cameras you already have I can't see how another camera or lens is going to help you try BiF. What you already have would be sufficient, the d7200 and 300 f4 with 1.4TC would be excellent and more than up to the job. I used to use a d700 and 300 f4 with 1.4tc and got some good BiF images.

The D500 is an excellent camera but for the price of upgrading from the D7200 to the D500 it's cost to benefit ratio is quite low. The d500 may do 10-12fps (I'm not sure on the exact figure) but the 6fps of the d7200 is more than adequate for most wildlife. I would try to get out to some good locations for BiF and from the experience make a decision if and what you really need rather than try to think what you need.

Very valid point. That's why I still shoot with D3/D700 combo. I don't see a need to upgrade to newer FF body.

I agree with Bill, the only improvement you'll see is by selling quite a few things and then saving up for a used 500mm f4 or 600mm f4. For wildlife you can't beat a long prime considering the bodies you already have.
