as above really, read a mixed bag of reviews regarding this lens and whether the nikkor 35 af-d is a better bet. plus it is mahoosive.

I like both of them. The Sigma 30mm is the sharper lens in the center over the 35/2 and I think for DX owners - and especially for D40, D40x and D60 owners as you get AF - it makes more sense.

In all honestly, you should probably Google this info as this question has been done to death on multiple forums, multiple times.

Also I'd consider the new Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 DX (not seen one, or used one), but it should be good, and definately worth a though for DX owners.

If you ended up with an S5 Pro, the 35/2 and S5 Pro is a very special combo.

Half the trouble with the 30mm f/1.4 is the people that buy them. It's the same with the 50mm f/1.8 Nikon, they get shot with fully open and then people wonder why their shots are oof - usually they're not, they just don't appreciate just how narrow the dof is at 1.4...

Yip - agree with that.
I got a Sigma 30mm F1.4 just last week. It's sharp OK. Plenty test shots all over the web.

Few subjects call for max aperture with lenses like that. Nice bright image for focussing/composition is what F1.4 does.

The Sigma is one of my favourite DX lenses. As mentioned above, shooting at f/1.4 is half the issue for a number of the problems reported IMHO. My lens is very sharp and is a great focal length on crop-sensor cameras.

yeah i know theres loads of info and im digging through it but its nice to have an opinion from here for things outlined above.

im using an e series 28mm and 50mm to see which suits me better and i did end up getting a s5 :D so maybe a 35/2 would be the way to go, im not that drawn to the new nikon, dont know why

the nikkor 35mm af-d looks very tidy actually, only 2 weeks till my birthday as well...

The S5 Pro and the 35/2 is lovely.

All 4 of the above are JPG's straight out of the S5 Pro, the 35/2 on the S5 Pro gives lovely colours.

s'alright i spose....

runs off to wanted section-is that the af-d version? pretty delicious (on my monitor at least)

Yeah, AF-D, but don't worry about the "D" thing - if you can find a non D one (technically an AF-N) thats the same thing and will probably be cheaper.

I've never got those sort of colours from my D700 with that lens, its a Fuji thing...

No lens is at its best fully open, dueto the distortion around its periphery.
