Hi all,

I'm thinking of getting the Sony 500mm F8 Reflex lens as it is in my price range. Is this lens any good and would it do the job of bird photography (and also what other situation would it work). Any opinions greatly appreciated as its alot of money I'm going to be forking out. If there is a better lens for the same sort of money then please say. Many Thanks.

anyone!!!!!!!!

I don't know anything about this lens, but a 500mm f/8 smells like a mirror lens, in which case you'd be better off giving this a miss, as it'll be pretty bad. Out of interest.. how much is "a lot of money?"

Sorry, don't know of any alternatives for Sony - is there a Sigma 50-500 in KM/Sony fit.

I had a 500mm mirror lens decades ago because it was small cheap and light. My opinion for what it is worth: NEVER AGAIN!

Thanks for letting me know I almost bought it, glad I didn't now. Whats the difference with mirror lens? I did find a Tamron zoom that went to either 400 or 500mm can't remember at the mo but that was about the same price at about £500. But being a newbee don't know what companies are good and bad.

Christ.. you weren't looking to pay £500 for that 500mm f/8 mirror were you - glad you posted! Its probably worth about £80-£120, but optically you'll be better off chucking a magnifying glass on the end of a bog roll tube with some sellotape..!

There is a Tamron 200-500 which is supposed to be quite good - never seen one or used one, but it'll be better than that 500mm mirror.

Thanks for the help guys I'm off to the shop today to buy the Tamron, then I'm straight down the New Forest. Dam shop doesn't open till 10:30 though

Will do thanks :):)

I had this for a while and its pretty good in good light. Nice and sharp when the suns out but it does struggle a little if its dark and cloudy. Quite heavy and long as well but the autofocus is pretty quick.
